The sun was setting in the Western horizon, the sky a full of golds and reds like a stunning portrait. The light lit up the water as a little tributary flowed gently into the grand River Moss. The birds and bugs still out aplenty as they savored the last of the sun's life giving light. Fireflies danced gently over the running water, the crickets playing accompaniment.
All was calm and peaceful, but Renaud Wildroar was still on his guard. The last time he had been on the River Moss he got stuck between to warring packs of vermin, but he felt safe enough at the time to light a little cooking fire on the bank of the little stream joining the big river.
He had been fishing that afternoon and had caught a fairly good sized dice. Renny was cooking the fish on a rock he found on the river bank and some mint he had found in the forest. Along with a big bunch of razzberries,...this was going to be a good meal...
The smell of the freshly cooked fish wafted in the air. It was just too mouthwatering! Renny took out a knife and began cutting the fish into bite sized piece when he heard a noise behind him. What now!... Renny thought to himself, but he didn't flinch to let the other beast know he had notice. He just moved his Katana on to his lap in case and continued to cut up the delectable fish.

Rogg Streambattle was in a good mood. The young otter felt happier than he had in a long time. Times were good for the mercenary, he had just completed an assignation up north, neutralized a warlord on the mainland, and just yesterday destroyed a whole gang of vermin who where harassing a family of hedgehogs. Yes, times were good. Rogg thought about all of this as he emerged from the River Moss. The otter flopped down on the warm grass and rummaged in his large haversack for his armor and sword. He usually wore these except for when he was swimming or not in danger, which seemed to follow the young otter around like a shadow. At the moment he was wearing his brown vest.
He paused as he caught the faint oder of cooked trout on the breeze. The prospect of a hot lunch appealed to Rogg greatly. He rose without thinking and started to follow the tantalizing scent. He stopped as he remembered to grab his sword, just to be on the safe side.
The closer he got the more he was teased by the elusive smell. A moment later he saw the other otter. He knew that others of his own species would not normally be a threat so he called out to the stranger. "Hello there matey!"...

"Hello there matey!"...
Renny looked up, into the brown eyes of a fellow otter. He had a look about him, like that of one who constantly fights, and by the weapons he carried, Renny assumed he was a mercenary assassin type, having treated many in the past.
The happy new comer looked very hungry as he eyed the fish. Renny relaxed and waved the new otter over.
"Aye! A 'ello ta ye as well mate! Ye be a lookin' rat'er 'ungry like. Tell me ye name an' why ye a be sa 'arupy dis fine dusk an' ah'll s'are dis big fis' wit' ye."
The fire crackled merry as Renny spoke. He really hoped that this warrior was friendly, or he just invited death to dinner....

Rogg placed was pleased to meet sombeasts that was not trying to kill him, a common occurrence with the otter. "I need to go get my things from back a little bit. I'll be back in a moment"
He was so excited not to be threatened by the other otter that he ran all the way back to his bag of belongings. He scooped them up in his arms and ran back to his hopefully new friend. When he arrived he dropped his things and smiled at the other otter.
"Aye! A 'ello ta ye as well mate! Ye be a lookin' rat'er 'ungry like. Tell me ye name an' why ye a be sa 'arupy dis fine dusk an' ah'll s'are dis big fis' wit' ye."
Still smiling he spoke even though he could not quite understand the other otter's strong accent, he got the jest of it: the stranger was inviting Rogg to lunch. "Sure thing matey, I would love that!" He made his way over to the crackling fire and sat down, and introduced himself to the other otter. "I'm Rogg Streambattle, mercenary from Green Isle." He proffered a webbed paw to the stranger....

I'm Rogg Streambattle, mercenary from Green Isle.
This was the first thing Azalea Snowfall the monitor lizard heard as she crept up on the pair of otters. With a vicious grin, she watched the two in absolute silence. The smoky smell of cooked fish wafted past her and she hissed quietly; the scent was not appetizing at all. It was getting harder to make out the two forms of the otters; dusk was indeed falling quickly.
She hissed again. She didn't have enough patience to wait for the two to notice her; she stood up with a snarl which completely drowned out the otters' conversation and the hiss of the fish as it cooked, along with the soft crackling of the fire. With a smooth hiss of steel, the monitor lizard drew her twin katanas; her trident was stored in her belt at the moment.
Her yellow eyes gleamed in the firelight as she stepped forward.

"I need to go get my things from back a little bit. I'll be back in a moment"
Renny chuckled as the new otter ran off to get his things. The chippyness of the otter's attitude soothed Renny's conscious of the thoughts of having to fight this new friend, however something played the back of his mind...Like..Someone else was watching him....Something...more like it.....something scaly...and sinister....A chill ran down Renny's spine. He had come across many different reptile in his travels,but...this one was not form here..it's exotic sent barely reached him as the creature was down wind. Renny kept his Katana on his lap, just in case the reptile decided it wanted dinner too....
"I'm Rogg Streambattle, mercenary from Green Isle."
"Ah, Mercenary type. Ah t'oug' sa. Ye had dat look about ye." Renny took two clam shells out of his bag, scooped some dice in them, plopped a few raspberries in both, and handed one to Rogg.
"Ah be Renaud Wildroar. Wanderin' 'ealer, swordsbeast, an' "Illusionist"." The reptilian feeling didn't go away. It only got stronger. The thing was defiantly coming toward them.
Then all of a sudden a large snarl erupted from the fauna behind Renny and Rogg. Renny jumped up, his Katana swinging out in front of him. He saw this large lizard coming for him. It was like the crossbreed of an ugly grass snake, neut, and multiplied 12x that size. Renny didn't know what it was, all he knew was it was armed and hungry looking.
"Arm yeself Rogg mate!" Renny shouted as the creature stepped into the ring of firelight.

"Ah be Renaud Wildroar. Wanderin' 'ealer, swordsbeast, an' "Illusionist"."
Rogg accepted the berries gratefully. An illusionist? Some kind of mystic? A slight chill traveled up the gullible otter's back, but he put the feeling down instantly. This was the first otter Rogg had seen in quite awhile and the mercenary did not want to mess their friendship up. "Well I'm glad to meet you Renaud. Ah, that sure must be, uh... interesting. Being an 'illusionist' that is-" He was cut off as Renaud shouted at him to arm himself. He sprang up looking behind the pair of otters. He saw the monitor. Rogg had never seen a monitor before, but he had heard tails of them and knew how dangerous they were. He grabbed his sheathed sword in the reverse-grip method and charged forward to meet the lizard, a dark look upon his bewhiskered features. He was angered that a stupid lizard had ruined his encounter with his new friend. But that would not last anyway, the young otter would dispatch the monitor and then get back to their meal...

Arm yeself Rogg mate!
Azalea hissed in reply to the otter's statement. She was pretty confident that she would not be injured by any weapon these two otters possessed. She looked pretty fearsome, blades bristling out across her form, especially the crossbelt of twelve daggers.
Well I'm glad to meet you Renaud. Ah, that sure must be, uh... interesting. Being an 'illusionist' that is-
The otter who had spoken that statement jumped up as he heard the first otter's cry. The second otter grabbed his blade and charged at Azalea. The monitor lizard didn't move, giving the otter an opprotunity to hit her. Then she hissed angrily and moved backward, raising a black steel katana.
"Want to try that again?" she hissed in a slightly mangled sounding accent; where she came from wasn't Mossflower after all. She grabbed both katanas in one paw and swiped at Rogg with the other paw, which was armed with long, jagged red-stained claws.
She then put one katana in her empty paw and charged rather slowly at Renny, striking at him with a katana.

"Well I'm glad to meet you Renaud. Ah, that sure must be, uh... interesting. Being an 'illusionist' that is-"
Renny heard Rogg's reply after he jumped up, but he couldn't reply with the situation at hand. He really wanted to though, to clear up any doubts the otter may have about him before they went into battle together, but it was too late. Rogg had jumped up and charged the lizard.
Now that Renny thought about it hard, he remembered some tales of lizards like this one from some mates he met along the coast. They called it a "Monitor" and they were flesh eaters from across the sea. From what he saw the lizard it looked like the description..., but Renny didn't have time to question his judgment. It was here and he had to deal with it as it attacked Rogg with it's deadly claws.
"Want to try that again?"
The deep accent of the lizard was spine chilling as the lizard slowly turned to charge at him. Obviously speed wasn't one of this beast's strengths, so Renny was going to play with it.
He dashed quickly out of the blow of the Katana, and raced toward the fire. He knew that if this beast was a flesh-eater it depended on sight and smell to catch it's prey. So he was going to eliminate both. He ran by the stream's edge splashing the water onto the fire, whipping out the light, as the sun had now set and filling the glade with smoke, to confuse all of the scents into one.
He then grabbed his Marlfox cloak, threw it on, and became one with the smoke, his blade concealed under his cloak so he entirely disappeared. Even the best of eyes wouldn't be able to find him, as he circled the camp site.

Rogg gripped his blade tighter. The monitor had two katanas, strange weapons. But that didn't matter. He attacked the lizard with the ferocity of a hungry rancor [oops...]. He thrust down at their attacker's unprotected back as she assailed Renaud....

It was only moments later that one of the otters poured water over the flames. She snarled viciously as the smoke filled her senses, stinging her brilliant yellow eyes. The otter had completely disappeared. With an annoyed hiss, she looked from side to side, the darkness obscuring her vision.
Something thunked heavily against her back and she felt a small prick of pain. With startling speed, she whirled around and slashed at Rogg with a katana.

(( Pick up the pace mates! Long Posts aren't that hard! )) The smoke had done just what Renny wanted it to do. It limited the lizard to face front fighting. Rogg was still engaged the lizard in battle and Renny knew if he got too close to the fight, he could horrible damage Rogg's chances of winning, but if he didn't do something Rogg defiantly wouldn't win.... Renny skirted to the edge of the smoke and flattened to the ground to be clear of the smoke, still concealed by his cloak. The smoke stung his eyes and dried his throat, but he suffered through it. Rogg had attacked the lizard's back and the lizard slashed back in retaliation. Renny kept low to the ground and crawled around like a spider, still concealed by the cloak. He took off his belt and griped it in his left paw. If he could just wrap the lizard's hind paws together, then Rogg could either finish it off or they could capture it and question it. The two creatures fought until Rogg had backed up significantly for Renny to make his move. Out of nowhere (or it would seem to others)Renny's belt whipped out, trying to catch the lizard's paws in it's wide black leather strap and it's solid silver buckle.

The smoke from the fire blinded the young otter to an extent. He could hardly see the gleaming blade that was slashed at his chest [see exhibit a], but his mercenary instincts warned him of the danger and the big otter raised his sword to where he thought the attack was coming from. Unfortunately, he misjudged his block and his sword only took part of the blow. The katana glanced off the otter's blade and scored a deep cut on the mercenary's thought. Rogg stood for a moment, shocked as the warm blood seeped onto the young otter's soft, white neck fur. A dizziness came upon him, and time seemed to stop as Rogg reeled back from the intense pain. He almost fell down from the shock, but then, the mercenary otter remembered a quote from his training: "Pain is an emotion that must be suppressed if one wishes to be successful in battle". Rogg knew that it was true, so he concentrated on his attacker, gripping his engraved blade tightly he inhaled slowly.
Then, he reacted to the monitor's attack. The pain enraged Rogg, his face took on an aspect of anger, and a deep hatred for the lizard came upon the young otter. Why would this... thing attack him and Renny? Why was it never easy? The mercenary otter gave a slight growl and took a long fast step forward. This evil creature must be taught how otters act when other otters are threatened. He brought his blade in a powerful over-pawed slash aimed at the monitor's scaly head...

Azalea hissed as her blade caught the otter. But it was only a few seconds later that Rogg raised his blade and swung down at her head as hard as he could. As he did this, the monitor lizard noticed the belt buckle Renny had thrown swinging forcefully at her legs. Now she had two choices, neither of which were desirable-get smashed on the head by a really angry otter's sword or get caught with a belt and she didn't have the time to dodge both.
But she did want to live.
As the otter's blade came closer to her head, she ducked to the side and Rogg missed, but the belt smacked her forcefully in the legs/paws and she fell down, narrowly avoiding skewering herself with her katanas. Knowing swords would be useless, she sheathed her two blades and struggled to get back up. And then she found out that the belt had wrapped around her paws so she was no longer able to stand.
She snarled, thrashed, hissed, and generally attempted to knock over and injure the otters standing over her. She looked at the leather binding her paws together and took a few swipes at it with a heavily clawed paw, hoping to cut the leather off so she could freely move again-unfortunately, it was probably not going to happen any time in the near future.
Basically, now her life was in these otter's paws. And they didn't look very happy.

From his position bellow Renny could watch the battle. Rogg and the lizard slashed at each other. One trying to kill the other and the other responding just as hard. Steel clashed upon steel as the fight ensued.
Renny wanted to cry out as he watched Rogg take a light blow to the neck. He knew from his healer's experience that cuts in the neck , although minor can become deadly if cut too deeply. Rogg staggered back a bit, but jumped right back up with a regrown ferocity. His pain didn't slow him down, it made him stronger! Renny mentally noted that to himself, although a good trait when you fight continually it can be dangerous at the best of times. His little trick with his belt HAD to work! Lives depended on it! ____________________________________________________
Renny's belt whipped around the lizard's coarse skin. He caught it! But now, he had to work fast! He lurched forward, lashing his buckle into place, securing the feet together. The lizard lashed at him, trying to get his belt off it's paws, but the leather was too coarse and rough to break.
Renny the whipped his cloak back, making himself seen and blowing away most of the smoke. He whipped out his Katana, and placed it just above the clip of the lizard's cape, half-kneeling. Even though the skin of the lizard as thick and hard to scar, the neck just below the chin is always one of the weakest points on any creature.
"Dan't make a move matey. Or ye may lose ye life just as fast as ye can blink."
Renny then glanced up at Rogg, who missed his blow and was still bleeding on his neck.
"Ye can calm yeself mate. Ga get a bandage from me pack over by da fire fur ye neck. Renny motioned with his head over to the now slightly smoking fire and his pack that still rest beside it.
"But be on ye guard," He added. Looking back down at the lizard."Fur ye be a slick one naw ain't ye....Ye may want ta be telling us w'o ye are and w'y ye come.....Or i'll 'and ye o're to me mate w'o was a goin' ta slice ye 'ead in 'alf nay a moment ago..."

As the monitor fell, Rogg leaned over, blood dripping onto his white neck fur. He was surprised that the lizard had fallen, seemingly on it's own. Then the otter saw Renny there, leaning over the prostrate monitor. He breathed heavily, the pain from the deep cut on his throat bringing the young otter to his knees [if otters had knees]. He could not have kept the fight up for much longer, the cut had made it hard going for the mercenary. A small cut should not have made him feel this bad. He pressed on the place where the katana had connected, it was not good. Rogg dropped his sword and gasped painfully. This was not good. He collapsed on his back from loss of blood. The young otter looked up at the clear sky, everything was becoming dark. Why was it so cold? It was not cold last time he could remember.....

The otter forced his blade under Azalea's chin. She hissed, knowing the close predicament she was in-she may not live through this, but there was a pretty good chance she was and she was cautiously optomistic.
Dan't make a move matey. Or ye may lose ye life just as fast as ye can blink.
Azalea jerked her head to the side, leaving a long, bleeding line there, but it wasn't too deep and didn't hurt her that bad. She looked up at Renny with deep hatred burning in her basilisk yellow eyes.
Ye can calm yeself mate. Ga get a bandage from me pack over by da fire fur ye neck. But be on ye guard. the otter who had caught her with the belt spoke quickly to the other before turning back to face her.
Fur ye be a slick one naw ain't ye....Ye may want ta be telling us w'o ye are and w'y ye come.....Or i'll 'and ye o're to me mate w'o was a goin' ta slice ye 'ead in 'alf nay a moment ago...
She wasn't going to answer-but anyway, she was saved by Rogg falling heavily backward while blood poured from the gash she had inflicted on his neck. She smirked cruelly as she watched the otter bleeding his life out on the grass. Hopefully it would kill him. If not, he'd be weak anyway. She'd finish him off and then come for the other otter.
She surveyed the 'dying' otter, reached back, and quickly grabbed one of her katanas, the one she had hit Rogg with, and examined it carefully. There was no trace of poison on the steel, and she didn't think she'd actually hit the otter that hard...ah well. Too late now.
"He'sssss dying, I think," she reminded Renny, looking slightly sheepish. She chuckled, sounding slightly demented. "I didn't actually mean to hit him that hard." she added in a soft hiss.
She was a carnivore, though. Everybeast was fair game to her deadly weapons. As a result....she didn't feel sorry for her newest prey.

He'sssss dying, I think,""I didn't actually mean to hit him that hard."
Rogg lay there for a moment. He just needed a quick rest before he confronted the monitor. Why was this little cut causing the otter so much trouble? The wound did not seem very serious, but then Rogg remembered an interesting thing he had learned in his long years as a mercenary; if one is hit just above the chest there is a certain place that if hit, stuns you for a short amount of time. That must be it, the otter must have been hit in that spot, more kinetic energy more then actual cut injuring Rogg, the strange feeling was leaving his head now. He was not dying, just stunned, thank the fates, Rogg thought something was very, very wrong. He sat up and the lizard spoke. "I'm not dying, frell it."
The big otter jumped to his paws and picked up his blade. How had the monitor got the better of him? Nobeast had ever bested the mercenary in sword battle... He shook the thought off, the smoke must have been the problem, yes the smoke was it. He was constantly thinking of the beautiful, young female otter he had met a few weeks ago. Her fur looked so soft and clean, her teeth glimmered like ripples on a clear lake when she laughed, so nice and kind....
Rogg brought himself back to reality, he glared at the monitor as if just noticing her. The otter raised his blade threateningly, he thought it was time to end this fool's life. He rubbed the slightly bleeding wound, and forgetting about Renny nearly yelled at the lizard. "You scum!! It's time for your sorry life to end!!" The young otter gripped his sword with both of his webbed paws and summoned up his hate to strike the monitor down.....

(( Rogg! Wait for meeeee!!!!!!))
The lizard twisted it's head around Renny's blade, drawing a long cut in it's throat. Renny knew his blade didn't make that' deep of a cut across as only a bit of blood dribbled down from the cut.
The lizard glared deep into Renny's golden eyes. Those eyes, those eyes....Renny they made a shiver run down his spine. They were cold...no kindness live in them...no mercy...just hate and a bloodlust....Renny had to stare down his blade, looking at the reflection of the lizard, in order to not cringing away in fear.
Renny was about to badger the lizard more when Rogg collapsed. Renny instincivly jumped up. His compassionate heart watching in horror as Rogg fell on his back gasping for breath...
"He'sssss dying, I think, I didn't actually mean to hit him that hard."
The lizard's cruel voice resounded in his ears, but Renny was oblivious. He had to do something! For a moment he forgot that he was containing a prisoner and lept up dashing over to his pack by the fire. He dashed over to Rogg, kneeling beside him.
"'Old on mate. Ah'll help ye."
"I'm not dying, frell it."
Rogg struggled to his paws. Renny beside him the whole time, so the cut wasn't that bad. That's good. When Renny got closer, he realized it probably hit a nerve. And as he thought more.....Renny remembered he just left the lizard alone!..He inwardly cursed himself and grabbed his blade again when Rogg shouted and charged the lizard.
"You scum!! It's time for your sorry life to end!!"

As Renny left to look at Rogg, he left the lizard alone for a vital moment; that was all she needed. She snapped her feet out of the belt's grasp and stood. Her katana had been put back in its sheath and she whirled out her broadsword; the dark, black metal seemed to be trailing smoke as she whirled it through the air with a hissing noise.
She ignored Renny; the next thing she heard was the 'dying' otter's voice as he miraculously began to get up, glaring at her and drawing his blade again.
I'm not dying, frell it.
The otter than charged at her with a roar.
You scum!! It's time for your sorry life to end!!
She chuckled. "Not that sssssssoon, otter." she hissed sharply, as the otter raised his blade to cut down at her. She smirked and positioned herself so the blade smashed against one of the shoulder-plates she was wearing. Then, she struck forward with her broadsword, aiming at the mercenary's chest, before she slashed at his face with a clawed paw.
