Name: Ripley Kimmanae Contarelle
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Species: Hare
Occupation: Private/Scout in the Long Patrol
Physical Appearance:
Ripley, full-grown, is of a short and slight build, with an athletic runner's physique. She is usually mistaken for younger than her actual age. Her fur is pure white, like that of the mountain hares in winter (except her coat remains yearlong) save for the tips of her long ears, which are black. She also has eyes of a very dark blue that can appear purple. She likes to call them "indigo", an easily identifiable trait passed down on her mother's side. Despite not being particularly girly, Ripley likes to dress rather feminine, with shorter, form-fitting clothes.
Possessions:
Ring-hilted rapier
Personality:
Ripley is, first and foremost, a cynic. She is outspoken, short-tempered, opinionated and proud. She is very sarcastic and has no patience for those who have their feelings easily hurt. Rather prejudiced, she is more than a little wary of those creatures of the vermin persuasion. Despite all her shortcomings, Ripley is incredibly clever and strategic-minded, and she particularly shines under pressure. She's also very playful, both in a teasing way, and a physical sense, having a tendency to start up games among groups of peers. Ripley both loves and hates passionately. She is swift to judge and slow to trust, but once one has her friendship, she is fiercely loyal.
Ripley doesn't get along too well with authority figures, or at least not those who are in charge of her. Being the daughter of one of the high-ranked officers of the regiment, it is difficult to say that the haremaid hasn't benefited from some kind of nepotism. Although she has the skills to back up her loud mouth, very few really take the effort to put her in her place. Her insolent nature is the biggest reason Ripley is still a scout, though she still prefers it that way. Were she a bit more respective of authority, her sharp instincts and combat skills would've led to her promotion by now.
Strengths:
-Swordfighting, particularly with her rapier
-Fast runner
-Perceptive and intuitive, like any good scout
-Polyglot; multi-lingual
Weaknesses:
-Long-range fighting
-Taking orders
-Can't swim
-Short temper
-Prejudiced towards "vermin" types
History:
Ripley was born and raised at Salamandastron, surrounded by the influences of the Long Patrol, especially with her father being an officer in the regiment. She has an older brother, Nathan, who has quickly followed in the footsteps of their father. Ripley also had a younger brother, Payton, the spitting image of her older brother. Her mother was not a raised Salamandastron hare, but instead hails from a small village north of Mossflower. She grew up in a very traditional setting, with females being the homemakers while the young males trained as fighters. This made Ripley's upbringing complicated. Her mother was determined to teach Ripley housekeeping skills; sewing, cooking, basic healing and the like. Annoyed and feeling smothered, Ripley grew fairly distant from her mother, taking lessons in combat instead from her older brother, with whom she has always been close.
When she was a young teen, her younger brother Payton (quick and with a rebellious streak like herself) had run off a bit too far down the shore and was captured by a marauding band of foxes, who intended on using him for ransom. When the young hare had given them too much trouble, however, they murdered him. This set a prejudice toward vermin, especially foxes, into Ripley at an early age that she has yet to grow out of.
Growing footloose and rather jaded in her mid-teens, she left home entirely without the permission of her family. She'd been just nice enough to leave them a note. Although she'd run into a few issues early on - especially with her affinity to go looking for trouble - she quickly became fairly good at taking care of herself out in the wild. A couple times, she encountered Long Patrollers, whom she refused to return with, but they were able to report back to her family that she was safe. She actually met some of her relatives at her mother's old village, spent some time with the Guosim shrews, but spent a majority of her time at Redwall Abbey. It was here that a few scouts from the Patrol had found her unexpectedly, almost two years after she'd run away. Begrudgingly, she returned home with them, but made it extremely difficult on them, pretending to run off again on a number of occasions, just because she thought it was funny.
She returned home to a relieved father and brother, but a furious mother. The time apart had done nothing to heal their relationship. Eventually, her father convinced her mother to allow her to join as a recruit for the Long Patrol. This started several years of her harassing both her peers and commanding officers on a regular basis. However, between her regular lessons as a recruit and numerous private lessons on the side, she became very skilled with her rapier. So when she became an official scout, instead of punishing her insolence, Ripley tended to get sent on more scouting missions, just to keep her out of the way of the officers.
Now an adult, she still has much the same outlook and entirely the same attitude. Ripley's quick wit and sword skills however, have earned her respect from both her peers and her elders.
