Rolft is covered with fur the same colour as rust, which gradually lightens to white around his eyes and chest. His eyes are dark brown, almost black, and they often twinkle with an air of mischief. Rolft is quite short compared to other squirrels his age, but he has a sturdy build which means he isn’t as weak as his height makes him seem.
His clothing consists of frayed dark blue tunic devoid of sleeves, and a piece of red cloth tied around his neck. A simple piece of rope serves as a belt, and despite his nature as a wanderer, he refuses to wear anything to cover his footpaws.
Possessions
Rolft doesn’t have many possessions, his philosophy of life being “Don’t harbour anything you can’t grab in a second.” He often has a manner of stick with him to help him on his walks, though he rarely keeps the same stick for more than a few seasons. He also has a faded red cloak is often used as a blanket or a form of shelter. For weapons, Rolft carries a small dagger tucked into his rope-belt. It is a very basic weapon, used mainly for protection against vermin.
His most treasured possession is a set of pipes, made from some reeds he discovered near the river and tied together using some thin twine. Rolft was very proud of his instrument-making skills and often plays on his pipes as he walks or at night if he can’t sleep.
Personality
Rolft is something of an enigma. More than anything else, he likes being on his own, yet he will willingly make friends with anybeast that wants him as their friends. He is the strong, silent type – never speaking unless he actually has something worth saying. However, he has a quick tongue when he needs it to get out of trouble.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Rolft is physically strong and is quite a competent fighter, as well as being a gifted climber and intelligent. However, he is quick tempered and impulsive, never taking the time to plan ahead or consider the consequences of his actions which, more often than not, leads him into trouble. He can also grow bored easily and sometimes even goes so far as to cause trouble just to have something to do. If he tells you a tale of how he defeated a gang of vermin, don’t be quick to believe that they were the ones who started it. He also has a deep-seated fear of all things winged, thanks to a childhood trauma involving an owl.
History
Rolft was born to a large family of squirrels who lived in a large oak tree deep in the Mossflower woodland. Rolft quickly developed his natural skills as a climber as he spent his first few seasons playing in the woods with his four siblings. One day, he was out playing with his twin sister past sunset when the two young squirrels were attacked by a hungry owl. Although Rolft tried to save his sister, he was sadly unsuccessful. Scared, dazed and upset, Rolft ran from the owl, not knowing which direction he was going. Eventually he managed to escape the owl by hiding in a bush near the river, where he fell asleep. When he awoke the next morning, he realised he had no idea where he was and he spent the next few seasons struggling to find his way home.
Eventually, he gave up and took to a life of wandering. He explored Mossflower, scavenging and fighting the various gangs of vermin that he came across. He threw himself heart and soul into these small battles, seeing it almost as a way of making up for being unable to save his sister. The thought of hunting down the owl responsible for his sister’s death as revenge crossed his mind many times. However, the event gave him a terrible fear of birds, owls in particular.
As the seasons went on, he began to think less and less of his old home and his family, although he still distantly wished he could find them.
