Name: Varpet Canitia Gender: Male Age: 61 Species: Rat Occupation: Wanderer, Martial Artist
Physical Appearance: Varpet is a average sized rat, though slightly hunched due to his age, has completely gray fur and a small beard tuft. His eyes are brown, and his snout is partially wrinkled with age. His body build is quite thin, though this can be deceiving due to his training in paw-to-paw combat. He wears brown robes, a black sash around his waist, and worn bandages around his paws, and feet. He uses a staff to help him walk in his travels, which doubles as a weapon as well, and carries a small pack on his back. He also has a cloak, but its in his pack usually, and he always wears a rice hat.
Possessions: For clothes, just his robe and sash, also a cloak for rain and cold. His rice hat is one piece of clothing he'll always wear, due to it being the same hat he made back from where he was born. He also carries a small pack, which has flint, a small flute, a dagger in a special sheath, and a flask of water. His staff counts as his weapon and to help him with travelling.
Personality: Varpet is wise, nearly always calm, and intelligent. Hes calm and collected most of the time, even when angry he refrains from raising his voice. Though when he meets new beasts, he tends to be cautious at first, but once he gets to know someone more, he'll be more open to them. He also has a strong sense of justice, and strong loyalty to friends. This loyalty became much stronger when he was put in charge of protecting Berina, a young dibbun maid.
Strengths: Experienced fighter. Knows many different forms of martial arts. Fit for his age.
Weaknesses: He tires out quickly. Not as fast as he was before. Eyesight is not as good as before.
History: Born in a far eastern land, Varpet lead a orphaned life, stealing food just to stay alive. It was one night when he went to steal from a small dojo, his fate changed forever. As he was stealing/eating the food, a student walked in on him and attacked him. Varpet held him off surprisingly, until the Master came in. The student backed off after he came in, and with great surprise, he asked why he attacked their guest. After that eventful day, Varpet became a student and learned many martial arts and how to fight paw-to-paw. It was a good life for Varpet, until the Master was killed. The one who killed the master, was the student who first fought him when he first came. The student fled and he never saw him again. This led to Varpet closing himself off from the other students, and leaving the dojo for solitary training.
After many years, and well into his mid 30s, he came back to a still running dojo, though....there weren't as many as before now. Though, a few of the teachers there recognized them and allowed him in, the rest were mostly new students who wondered why they let him in. Finally establishing himself as master after years of practicing and meditation, he finally opened his heart to others now.
Many more years later, well into his late 50s, he truly felt his age reach him. Most of the teachers passed away and he was the last teacher left. Only a few students remained as well, the rest left after learning enough, due to the war happening on the horizon. This all came to a breaking point, when the war broke out, causing much destruction and many causalities. Then, the war came to a lull in the fighting and many were waiting for the fight to resume. Varpet took advantage of this by sending his remaining students to a nearby village that was evacuating villagers onto a ship. His students left with much reluctance, and soon Varpet was alone. If soldiers came to this dojo, he would defend it with his life, and give his students a chance to live their lives. Instead of soldiers coming in, was actually the King and Queen with their two children. This surprised Varpet greatly, and surprised him even more when the King asked if he could help them. He couldn't say no, since it wouldn't feel right if he did. After a few moments, he agreed to watch over the Queen and her children. The king would stay behind and give them as much time as he could with the few soldiers that came with them to protect them. One of the soldiers would go with the Varpet and the Queen, for extra protection. Using a secret escape tunnel, Varpet led the group through the maze-like tunnels and exited out into a forest not far from the village. Soon they made it to the village just as the rival warlords army could be seen approaching over the hill not far from the village. They made it barely as the ship set sailed away from land. Its been two years since that day, one year of sailing across the ocean, stopping at many islands and avoiding raiders. The last was when they finally reached and landed onto Mossflower, along the northern coast and the villagers settling further into Mossflower. As the villagers began rebuilding, the Queen asked if the soon leaving Varpet if he could watch over her daughter, Anna. He was confused onto why she would ask him this. He agreed reluctantly and left with his young charge in tow. He decided to stop by near a place he heard about from the captain of the ship that brought them to Mossflower. A place called Redwall, a sanctuary of sorts. Though, on the first day of travelling, his students had followed him without knowing and refused to go back. He knew how stubborn they could be and allowed them to come with him and resume their teaching of the martial arts along the way.

Very interesting, thought I will need to ask Tracy about the whole existence of the Dojo system in the Redwall universe. We have places inspired by other cultures not mentioned in universe, such as the port of Los Lobos, so it may be acceptable.
Character wise, I'm not really seeing any direct issues. The history section is a little bit confusing at the end, especially in regards to the King, Queen, and the Warlords. Who are they? What exactly is there connection to Varpet, or did they just show up out of the blue one day? Is the royalty's faction colonizing Mossflower, temporarily fleeing, or something else? Also, who is this Berena? I assume she's the daughter of the queen you mentioned? If you could provide a bit more info, it would be helpful.
