Name: Madiline Praefuscus Caeruleus Sapphirus Jaunus (Maddie) Gender: Female Age: 25 Species: Hare Occupation: Sergeant of the Long Patrol
Physical Appearance/Possessions: Madiline is unusually white, a pallidness to her pelage that is scarcely seen at in the south. Her fur is densely laden on her skin, and her ears are the average for a hare; sticking up exuberantly most of the time, large and noticeable. A blush hue surrounds her blue eyes, iris brimming from tints of dark cerulean to that of northern ice. Maddie is strong, yet lithe and nimble enough to wield her special weapon. She carries a limp from an injury in a shipwreck on her left foot, though it has healed enough to were it is scarcely noticeable unless focused on. Her nose is a rosy pink, just as her skin, and faded scars dwell on her pink paw pads.
Her eyes display a great deal of her current emotions, as do her actions (like most other creatures). Her snout is average, perhaps a little longer than the average hare. Thalia wears a navy blue collared shirt, sleeves rolled up to her elbows most of the time as she prefers to have her arms more free. Her buttons are mostly buttoned, maybe a few unbuttoned at the top to loosen up the top. She also wears baggy, black pants with an ebony belt wrapped comfortably around her waist with a silver-looking buckle. Tucked in various loops and sheaths attached to the black strip, daggers and herbs lay. Thalia has a limited knowledge of herbs, yet knows the basics for dressing a simple cut. Also, she has a sling protruding from the right side of her belt, within snatching distance if calamity befalls. Finally, seen draped across her back (a lengthy, strong, black colored cloth tied to both ends to use as a strap to carry it) is Thalia's prized possession; a metal bow-staff. It is dulled, the average scratch upon its silver body, but deadly blades dwell on each end, points definitely sharp. She sharpens the ends with a hardy ashen colored stone which she keeps in the left pocket of her belt, opposite to her sling.
Possessions: Sling, Daggers, Knife Sharpening Stone, Simple Herbs, Metal double blade bowstaff (which she calls an Archonae due to the arched blades on either end, both bowing in opposite directions. There is a grip in the middle of the pole, formed by roughing up the metal when still at melting point, providing a firm grip when handling.)
Personality: Maddie is a persistent soul, always portraying outstanding focus and effort. She is a kind soul, not bloodthirsty in any way, but she has a firm vibe to her; she destroys evil to safe good, and with zero hesitation! Madiline was always a blunt (though not disrespectful) creature, yet still rather bashful. She keeps to herself often, feeling lonely every now and then. When she gets depressed, she always leaves and practices with her Archonae. When talked to, Maddie is a kind, humorous hare. She cracks jokes here and there and can be quite a smart-mouth when she feels like it, but usually keeps her witty comments to herself.
Madiline tends to be self-sacrificial, ignoring her needs and focusing mostly on others. She does enjoy life and takes care of herself, but her perspective is different: "Once more into the fray, to the last good fight I'll ever know; live and die on this day, live and die on this day." (from the movie 'The Grey') That quote describes how she sees every battle as it comes and goes. She doesn't enjoy fighting, and tries to resolve as many problems as she can, using reason instead of ranting. Madiline has a friendly soul, a persistent mind, and brilliant focus.
Physical Strengths: *Sleight of hand *Flexibility *Strength
Maddie's reflexes are impressive, and she has a great deal of dexterity. Her strengths are the key necessities to wielding Archonae, as you are constantly dodging its blades yourself while continuing the momentum. The faster the weapon goes, the stronger the assault. Madiline always has an incredibly strong grip on her weapons and seems rather indestructible (and she is most of the times against swordsbeasts/spearbeasts, but things catch her offguard; she has the scars to prove it), but arrows and stones are harder to block with her double bladed bowstaff than one would think.
Physical Weaknesses: *Faded limp *Slower than the average hare in running (partially because of limp)
As most old injuries, their initial pain reoccurs here and there, particularly during a familiar exercise it was administered. Her limp is tiring at times, and rather painful after a good deal or really running. After walking for long periods of time, it does get sore, but is definitely tolerable. During winter, her foot gets more stiff and uncomfortable than usual, sometimes a piercing pain where her foot smashed into the deck of the ship (right at her heel). When they brought Madiline in from the shore-side, her heel was swollen and bleeding. They ended up pulling out an over-sized splinter. Because of reoccurring pain and seasonal soreness, running isn't her thing.
Mental Strengths: *Persistence *Consideration *Focus
A very dedicated and reliable creature Maddie is, always sympathetic for goodbeasts yet rarely vermin. She is very pensive on battle plans or overall decisions that must be made, not impulsive or rash in deciding. Maddie isn't much the strict leader type. She is proud of her rank, but this hare suggests more than she commands. If she were in charge of a regiment, Madiline would certainly own up to her authority, but not in an overly proud fashion. Her focus is very good, and it must be to use such a weapon she stows along her back. At times, she gets in a certain mode that enables her to dedicate 150% attention to her tasks. Even when the sun falls well beneath the horizon, Madiline will continue to train if she has set a goal that she hasn't yet achieved. Some may see her as over-persistent, putting her health at risk.
Mental Weaknesses: *self-deprecating *very harsh on body *self-sacrificial
Maddie does have strengths, but her weaknesses do affect her health at times. She looks down upon her self a lot, always seeing her actions (and possibly opinions) not good enough. That does drive her to do better, but most of the times too harshly. Her body takes in a lot of damage during training, yet she does not stop due to her stubbornness to complete her tasks or goals.
During battle, Madiline is very willing to take an arrow through her heart to prevent it from going into another's. Although it could be seen as a strength, that she is that considerate of others, it overall doesn't help her well-being; it harms her most of the time, the myriad of faded scars proving that.
History: Maddie was born in the north, her father great with metals. He was no badger lord, but he had the potential to be as good if he took the time on a certain project; most weapons or trinkets were quickly made, no real care administered. Her mother mainly took care of her, teaching her how to wield a bow-staff, not a metal object, but a wooden stick. Her mother had a limited knowledge, so after a few months of showing Maddie how to be fluent with the movement between hands and around the body, she left Madiline alone to practice. Maddie improved incredibly, but not to champion level before her parents broke the news to her about this wonderful, red stoned building in the south. Redwall! They where about to begin a journey to Redwall in the next few days. Grettir, Madiline's father, stayed in his forge until they left, only coming out every now and then to eat or drink, rarely to talk or even say a greeting to his wife or daughter.
They did dwell in the midst of the northlands, so their journey was far from concise. It took several days to get to the western shore. Maddie's father knew a kind sea otter by the name of Webster Rudnick, waiting by the sea with an able ship, and he will kindly sail the small family near Salamandastron so they can finish their journey; traveling across dunes, then voyaging through Mossflower Wood to meet their peaceful destination. The family was ecstatic. Maddie was about 15 years old at the time; an able bodied beast with the sense to keep quiet and stay helpful, always. Her father had given her a brilliant weapon before they left, one he had spent days before forging in his now abandoned cavern. Archonae was a beauty; silver in color, double bladed, both knives bowed in opposite directions, one protruding from either end of a thick pole -- hollow yet scarcely breakable. There was a fine grip imprinted in the middle of the pole, wrapped completely around the middle of the weapon, providing an unbreakable grasp. She cherished it, and tied a piece of cloth tight around both ends, wearing it over her shoulder like a quiver of arrows. Of course, they were going to Redwall, a peaceable abode, but a fool they would be to travel with goods aplenty around this land without a weapon (and someone who could wield it best). Maddie was double-y excited, though she kept it contained, heart brimming with pride. Her father made this, for her!
After traveling on foot for days, the family arrived at the seaside at midday, unpacking what meager rations they had left (but you know hares, meager is still a fair meal; i'm surprised the gluttons didn't finish it off right away!). They sat on the sun-warmed sand, Grettir fiddling with his pallid mustachio, tips curled upright in a fancy fashion. He was a stronger fellow, not so nimble or speedy, but definitely a strong lad; his belly also tightened the buttons around his forest green vest, not bulging out like an ocean wave, though Grettir Eleran Dorocha Diamair Jaunus was certainly not skinny. Grettir was a white coated hare, as were a select few in his lineage, though Vendera, Madiline's mother, was not. She had a rusty brown topcoat, belly a light beige speckled with chocolate brown. A very unique pelt, as is her mate's, but Maddie received her father's fur and strength, and her mothers dexterity and flexibility. Vendera was a long patrol hare for most of her life, retiring at 32 years old to go live with Grettir in the northern sectors of this earth. When Madiline was born, her mother was around 34, and father at least 36 years old. The parents never spoiled her, yet never abused her in any way. They punished her for doing things wrong, but only with voice, not fist or foot. You could say they were great parents; Maddie cherished them.
Webster Rudnick strutted up, a burly creature he was! He had the arms of a thousand soldiers, muscles rippling as he saluted the family of hares. His face was that of a wise man, cheeks dulled by countless waves and battles, a small scar stretching from jaw to cheek; faded, but still noticeable. Webster wore an eye patch over his right eye, his other orb a dark green, brimming with shades of verdigris from lights to darks. His skin was a dulled chocolate hue, stomach a light, mousey brown. He had a slight beer belly, bulging slightly out over his tattered brown pants, torn at the knees. He had no shirt on, face jolly as he trudged up through the sand. His teeth were slightly yellowed, breath fishy as he greeted us with kind words, though voiced in a bellow as deep as the ocean's floor.
"Th' beauty's ready for y' folks! Tide's turnin', so I suggests we get movin'!"
We boarded, and Maddie took an immediate liking to the friendly and humerus otter. He spoke of his family; Nerezza and his young'uns named Aurelie, Colleen, and Espen. Maddie would like to meet them sometime! They seemed like a handful as Web bantered on about them, but it was clear by the look in his eyes as he spoke that this silly otter loved his family!
They were days on the ocean, and smart by stocking up on resources and fodder before they left on the trip. They stayed somewhat close to the shore, seeing the sand glimmer on the horizon like a field of gold. The waves got increasingly rough, like a group of five year olds in a splashing fight. Water doused the ship and currents got choppy, sky growing ashen grey and thunder warning us of his approaching brother.
"Best stow yer gear in the bunker, lads and lasses," My new pal Web roared, voice booming over the waves. "These waters are abou'ta get a little rough!" No one saw the worried look on the otter's face, eyebrows furrowed and teeth grinding as he steered the ship here and there, a virtuoso sailor he was, but in this weather, he felt like a helpless river-pup.
It was the first lightning strike against a sky that was once ashen grey, now coal colored and dark as anyone has ever seen it when light was still desperate to shine. It wasn't even night, but the sky was intimidating as well as the towering waves, gelid arms groping towards the sea-farers. Turmoil broke out between brother currents, waters crashing with great force, tossing Web's poor ship here and there. They lost sight of the shore as it grew darker, but everyone knew it was west of the ship, even though it was invisible to the naked eye. We drew closer to the mound of sand that once glistened gold, now crepuscular and dull, looking more like a sea of ash, hardly lighter than the ocean they were already upon. The sun does lighten things up and Maddie would never see it as the same again, and her companions will never see it hereafter.
The ship tilted, toppling over as Grettir and Vendera rammed into the side closes to the raging waters, a wave ramming the wooden floater with such force, throwing all but Maddie and Webster overboard. Web hung on the wheel, a shocked grimace upon his face. Grettir and Vendera were lost in the ocean depths, and a soft wail could have been heard further from the shore as Madiline's mother gave one desperate attempt to stay above water, but waves overtook her and the kind hare's body was lost to the western sea. Blood was dribbling from Webster's nose where he knocked his muzzle when the ship suddenly tipped and blood was glittering maroon on the ship's side where Grettir slammed his head, soon washed away by salty water. Maddie held tightly to the weapon her father made her, yelling her parents names as she grasped the lower part of the mast, holding for dear life as the waves tormented the boat tossing it here and there. She could hear Web's holler softened by the ocean's roaring.
"Maddie! Maddie! Where are ya' lass? Whe..." It was then he stopped as the ship tossed him forward. With a grunt, his head hit the deck and the otter was washed off to sea as the ship tipped completely, a holes in the hull by the battle against water and wood. The otters body was never to be forgotten, but lost to the sea for eternity. Maddie was rushed under water by the sudden wave, and another smashed the boat to pieces. She could see hardly anything, the ocean as dark as the night sky, but she felt a large chunk of wood bump her head. The young hare-maid lunged forward, grasping the branch, her weapon strapped safely along her back by that strong piece of cloth. Soon, Maddie resurfaced, buffeted by wrathful waters here and there, but still desperately hanging on. When the realization of what really hit her happened, tears started forming at the rims of her eyes. She had no family, she lost the friend she had grown so close to over the past several days of sailing, and she was alone, no clue of where to go and helpless to fight the currents. It was by pure luck that the storm died down quickly and waters vomited the white hare up on the shore with Archonae safely along her spine.
Maddie woke up to find herself in the care of Salamandastron hares, relieved of her weapon. She questioned them, of course, desperate to see if Webster, Grettir, or Vendera had been saved as well, but she just got questioning looks. After returning to full health, Madiline was given back her weapon and taken in the ranks as a private. Working her way up, Maddie was able to achieve position of a Seargeant. Now, she does what she can for others, hoping that she can prevent what happened to her as best she can.
