Name: Mist Oakmerry Gender: Male Age: 24 Species: Squirrel Occupation: Abbey Recorder
Physical Appearance: Mist is slight and short. He looks like a bit of running or maybe a few push-ups would do him some good, though it can't be said of him that he over-indulges in food or drink. He's not exactly a furred skeleton but he looks like there may be one in his family tree. Possibly a raccoon, too, from the dark circles 'round his eyes almost constantly. His fur, surprisingly neatly-kept despite his rather lacking physique, may have been a nice ruddy brownish-red once, but seems to have faded to a more dusty color, perhaps due to lack of sunlight.
Negatives aside, he does have two very sharp, intelligent eyes like gateways to a deep verdant forest without end. His slim, dextrous fingers and skillful hands also call attention to themselves, though more often than not they are used for little more than bearing a small candle-holder or adjusting the glasses that rest on his nose.
His smiles are shy and his face seems more suited for serious looks or the deep, distant gaze of one in deep thought. Which is good, since those are the two expressions most commonly seen there. However, when his rare smiles do emerge they show a remarkable innocence that breaks through the clouds of his less amiable aura.
Possessions: Seldom is this squirrel seen without his pockets stuffed with scrolls, quills and ink and at least one candle in a holder. Perhaps two. He also has a nice pair of glasses on his nose, and another for back-up just in case, tucked away in his vest.
Personality: Mist analyzes things. He takes his position as Abbey Recorder very seriously and therefore treats most things as points of data that must be gotten down for future Abbeydwellers to read. He often acts more as an observer than a participant, which has earned him the reputation of being standoffish and not knowing how to have fun. He can also come across as rather cold, and doesn't often get invited to private parties if it can be helped.
He is, however, quite witty, and if he can put down his quill long enough to hold a good conversation he shows himself to be quite friendly. It's just he doesn't know how to put away the seriousness when it's time for fun. He is especially awkward around young ones and constantly finds excuses to shirk his duty of teaching young Abbey children to read and write for this reason.
Sometimes he comes across as one who is not really experiencing his own life. Instead he is merely writing down what he sees and what happens around him as if none of it has to do with him. When he attempts social interaction his awkwardness and serious demeanor put off many he tries to speak with. Plus his love for being most active at night keep him away from most social circles.
Strengths:
- A keen analytical mind
- A loyal and determined sense of duty
- An appreciation for the wonders of the natural world
Weaknesses:
- An awkwardness around others, especially dibbuns
- An objective take on life
- A difficulty in expressing himself aloud
- A nonchalance about taking care of his body
History: Mist was born to a good family of Abbeybeasts and grew up in the loving atmosphere of the Abbey walls. However, even from an early age he kept himself apart from others. He seemed drawn to the night-time, and often slept during the day so he could sneak out at night, getting up on the Abbey walls to gaze up at the stars.
The only part of Abbey life he seemed to appreciate were his lessons in the care of the older Abbey Recorder. He took to reading and writing very well, and soon after he graduated from dibbun-hood he began seriously training as the Recorder's apprentice. During this time he earned the nickname 'Morning Mist', which stuck with him the rest of his life. It was said of him 'Just like the mist of morning, he fades as soon as the sun comes up'.
And it was true. His obsession with the stars and the night sky carried over into adulthood. As Recorder he often took careful study of the positions of the stars, creating extremely detailed star-charts for the Abbey records. Though he was serious about his duty of recording important events during the day, he would often appear sleepy and bleary during daytime events. Some Abbey dwellers who would interact with him during the day would swear he and the Mist they would meet at night were two completely different beasts.
His nocturnal habits tended to be bad for his eyesight and health, as he was seldom out in the sun for long and never seemed to be around (or awake) at mealtime. He cared little for it, though. He became a regular nightly figure at the Abbey, walking here and there under the stars with one or two candle-holders in his hands. Perhaps his best friends could be said to be the night-watchbeasts who would man the Abbey walls at night during times of danger. It was these beasts who would most often see Mist in his true, active state and learn exactly how intelligent and interesting of a creature he was.
Regardless. Despite his young age and apparent disregard for personal health, Mist makes a rather decent Abbey Recorder, and more likely than not the best astronomer the Abbey has ever seen. His distaste for teaching Dibbuns in the Recorder School aside, he takes to his every duty quite seriously and is a dependable ally in crisis.
Relationships: The Oakmerry family includes Mist's mother, father and a young sister who is hardly more than a dibbun. Sadly, as they tend to be the day sort and he tends to be the night sort he hardly has contact with them despite living in the same Abbey.
