Name: Morwenna Fairpaw Gender: Female Age: 27 Species: Ferret Occupation: Bounty hunter, mercenary
Physical Appearance: Morwenna is a tall, muscular ferret with light silver fur and blue-grey eyes. She takes after her lovely mother in appearance. Her nose is pink and there are smudges of darker fur around her eyes and the bridge of her nose, but she doesn’t have a full mask.
Some darker-tipped fur also runs down her back. The fur on her chin, throat, and paws is white, but this has become less apparent over the years. When Morwenna was a kit, her body fur was a darker silver color, but it faded as she aged.
When fully armed, she wears a suit of leather armor that consists of a brigandine, arm bands, leg bands, and a gorget. She had a helmet for it also, but lost the helmet in a fight when she threw it to escape someone.
Under the leather armor, she wears a partially-sleeved haubergeon. Under the haubergeon, she wears a lightweight gambeson, and under the gambeson, a plain dark blue tunic. If she doesn't need to wear everything, Morwenna will leave things off at her own discretion.
Morwenna keeps her dagger in a scabbard on her belt and she usually carries the glaive in her paws. She has a leather sheath for its blade, but rarely uses it.
She wears necklace under her tunic. It’s made up of a leather cord with small grey stones knotted into it and a larger pendant hanging from its center. The pendant is a faceted blue jewel cut in the shape of a teardrop and set in a silver frame.
Possessions: Morwenna only has two weapons. The first is a glaive-guisarme with a scimitar-like blade and a bright red tassel attached at the joint of the pole and blade. In addition to being decorative, the tassel can also be used to signal and distract. Morwenna’s second weapon is just a long dagger. The glaive is her weapon of choice and she fights with the dagger as a last resort.
She has a hooded, pale grey velvet cloak that closes at her neck with a metal clasp. She wears the cloak when travelling, and Morwenna stores food and other supplies in a pack. She also has a carrying case meant for large scrolls.
She usually wears the case strapped to her back, but sometimes puts it into her pack if there’s room. The case has a built-in section for writing utensils and Morwenna keeps second, smaller reed container inside of it.
She stores parchment in the case along with a quill pen and a stick of charcoal with a very fine point. To ensure enough storage space, Morwenna squeezes as much writing as she can onto the parchment. She also keeps the sheets of parchment strictly organized.
They are tightly rolled up and tied off with yarn. Sheets that have been fully-written on get black yarn, the sheets that aren’t filled get red, and blank sheets get white. To make it even easier, she stores the written-on scrolls inside of the smaller case and leaves the blank parchment inside the main container.
The only other things that she has are her armor, haurbergeon, gambeson, tunic, necklace, a rarely-used scabbard for her glaive's blade, and a sling that she can use to carry the glaive to her back.
Personality: Morwenna mainly looks after herself and has a neutral attitude towards life. She’ll help out almost anyone. They can be vermin, goodbeasts, beasts in between—it’s all fine with her. Morwenna’s a soldier of fortune and alignment doesn't matter much to her so long as she can get some gain for what she’s doing. She keeps records of her jobs and clients, and she has a personal set of morals, but the morals revolve around her feelings.
While Morwenna will capture and/or enslave others if the job requires it, she won’t mistreat them if she can help it. In her opinion, it doesn’t hurt to treat captives well—they might do you favors later for it. She prefers not to kill innocents, but will. She will break promises if it’s in her best interest, even if that means fleeing in the heat of battle (she’s done that).
She doesn’t mind being called selfish or a coward—Morwenna admits to being her own brand of such. She’ll welcome nearly any conception about herself if she can work it to her advantage, and she’ll chance many a thing if she thinks she can get away with it.
She’s taken bounty jobs before, but other than that, Morwenna won’t go out of her way to slay someone. She’ll kill in a fight if she has to, and she has little qualms about killing in self-defense.
If there’s time, Morwenna will ask the victim for their last words, and if there’s even more time, she’ll personally record them there. It’s only polite. She’ll even tell them to the dead’s next-of-kin if she’s feeling particularly generous (or if she’s contractually obligated).
Morwenna has always found last words fascinating, especially ones that are made up on the spot. She seeks inspiration for her own last words and thinks that last words in general are poetic, even if the actual words aren’t that interesting.
Morwenna’s been writing down last words since her adolescence. If she has the time, Morwenna would like to write an elegy for herself (not a eulogy though—she’s not that selfish). Until she goes to her mother’s house to store her used parchment, Morwenna keeps any and all last words she jots down inside of her scroll case, in addition to her job and client records.
Only a small portion of the statements come from creatures Morwenna’s personally killed. Most are from deathbeds, hearsay, and other written records.
Strengths: Glaive proficiency – Years of training and experience have made her skilled with the pole-arm
Self-confidence – Morwenna knows who she is and refuses to change for anyone
Job satisfaction – She enjoys bounty hunting
Wilderness survival skills - She can take care of herself to some extent while away from civilization
Tracking skills - Owing the skill to her job, she is able to track things
Weaknesses: Reliance on glaive - Morwenna prefers to fight with her glaive and is less confident without it
Selfish - Morwenna’s top priority is herself
Unreliable - Morwenna goes by her own rules more than others’, and she’ll abandon things if she sees fit to do so, which can make her a target of unsatisfied customers
Potential to overheat - While her armor, haurbergeon, and gambeson provide protection, they leave Morwenna more vulnerable to overheating than she'd be if she were less clothed, especially in warm weather
Amount of things to carry - Morwenna can get slowed and weighed down by all of her stuff if she gets into a fight while carrying it and doesn't have time to remove it
History: Morwenna was born to just her mother Carwen, who lived in a community of various beasts. Carwen educated Morwenna well in reading, writing, bookkeeping, and manners.
Morwenna’s father had died in a shipwreck before Morwenna was born. Morwenna’s mother hadn't been very surprised by his death. He’d been a corsair. He was often away at sea and she had expected him to die there. Morwenna picked up on some faint sadness in her mother’s eyes and voice when her mother spoke of him, but Morwenna never missed her father.
How could she miss someone she’d never known? She didn't even use his name—Fairpaw was her mother's family name and it belonged to an extant line of well-to-do ferrets. Plus, life was for the alive and Morwenna intended to enjoy herself, not mourn a dead ferret. The most she wondered was how it felt to sail in the rough waters he’d died in.
Morwenna never found out how it felt. She lost interest. Instead, when she was 14, she learned to wield a pole-arm and took a great interest in last words. If there was a dying creature around, Morwenna would take down their words as soon as she could.
This behavior bothered her mother, who was troubled to have, in her opinion, such a morbid daughter. Morwenna always found that strange that her mother disapproved of her taking down last words, but wholeheartedly approved of her learning to wield an instrument of death.
When Morwenna was 20, she got herself some leather armor and a beautiful new glaive. Morwenna hired herself out for a variety of jobs and accepted numerous things as pay. She acquired her necklace and her haubergeon that way.
At 23, she took to travelling around for work instead of staying in her town waiting for requests. Four years later, she’s kept up that lifestyle, although she returns home to get money, store scrolls, and partake in domestic comforts.
Relationships: Carwen Fairpaw – Morwenna’s mother, a ferret from a well-off family and a jeweler. Morwenna keeps in touch with her and Carwen helps with Morwenna’s bookkeeping.
Hector Halfear – Morwenna’s father, a ferret missing half an ear. He died at sea.
Fairpaw family members – Morwenna knows they exist and that her mother keeps in touch with them, but Morwenna hasn’t met many
Various clients – Morwenna’s clients range far and wide, and may or may not think well of her
