Name: Rausaro “Rau” Riverpaw
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Species: River Otter
Occupation: Slave
Physical Appearance:
Five years of continued abuse has had a profound effect on the slave known as Rausaro. The river otter's wrists and ankles are scarred from being manacled too tightly, new lashes line his back, and his weight has dropped significantly since his capture.
Rausaro wears a torn and ragged grey tunic and a worn out belt; a poor remnant of his wandering days. His fur is light brown with a pale cream streak leading from his nose and cheeks down to his chest, and he is slightly taller than his fellow otters.
On each side of his neck, Rau sports a blue paw tattoo with green waves, a valued token of his deceased and scattered clan. His face is highlighted with dark green eyes, along with a diagonal scare on his left cheek from a close miss.
Personality:
Rau’s slavery has been hard on him. Where once he was an enthusiastic and friendly member of his holt, he now finds himself a much quieter creature withdrawn into himself.
However, despite his silent demeanor, he still holds on to the caring aspect of his heart, buried though it might be.
That "softness", however, hasn’t stopped him from plotting the imminent demise of his captors. If there’s any creature he has no mercy for, it’s slavers. His inability to do or say anything about his circumstances has been the greatest torture to him, but he knows his options are very limited; if he succeeds in escaping, he risks the retaliatory deaths of other slaves. If he fails, he'll end up as a snack for Obsidious's pet snake. For now, he battles the danger of impatience, waiting for something to change the equation.
As a warrior, Rausaro prefers small scale combat with a tree or rock to his back. The otter is not the kind of beast to blindly charge an enemy group, though his impulsiveness have put him into trouble on more than one occasion. In combat, he generally sticks to his stilletos; he lacks experience with normal otter weapons like slings and Javelins.
Rau deeply enjoys listening to the tales of Bards, along with learning the history of Mossflower. As a Dibbun, he grew interested in the stories about the Green Isle, and seeks to one day visit the Kingdom of the High Rhulain.
Like most of his kind, he is a strong swimmer; he also has experience in the fishing that made up his clan's expertise. In happier days, he enjoyed experimenting with vittles.
Possessions: As a slave, he doesn’t have much in the way of possessions, aside from his belt and a ragged tunic. Before he was captured, he had a handful of steel throwing stilettos with fishbone hilts and a sharkskin leather tunic scavenged from a slain corsair. Now, they are likely buried deep within the armory of Obsidious Bane’s horde. Aside from his Tattoos, he has nothing remaining of his clan.
Strengths:
Loyal: while Rausaro often keeps to himself, he is fiercely loyal to those he befriends. He just can't bear abandoning his friends, especially after losing his clan.
Silent: while not particularly strong, the otter excels in stealthily hunting his foes, thanks to his now deceased clan's way of life.
Knife thrower: As a slave captured before his coming of age, Rau was never taught the traditional sling and javelin based combat that his Holt used. However, an unexpected ally among the ranks of the corsairs taught him am alternative: Knife throwing. While by no means an expert like Rakka, he is still quite good at flinging sharp objects at his foes with a fair degree of accuracy.
Persistent: While many of his fellow slaves have given up hope of ever escaping Bane’s horde, Rau has refused to give in, and constantly looks for holes in the horde's security. Eventually, he will find a way...and when he does....
Weaknesses:
Reckless: when his blood gets pumping during a fight, Rau is quite likely to jump into a fray without thinking of the penalty. Unfortunately, this careless trait has landed him in trouble before; his currently slavery was a result of trying to fight too many slavers at once.
Guilt: While Rausaro is friendly enough, few have guessed what he perceives as his dark secret; he accepted the help of a Corsair from one of the crews involved in the sacking of his holt. This has resulted in some serious self doubt for the otter. He is unaware of what role his makeshift ally actually played in the death of his holt.
Malnutrioned: Rausaro's captivity has left him in poor shape to fight his captors. His will may be unbroken, but his captors have done their best to break his body.
Withdrawn: Partially because of his broken past and for his fear of being ostracized for the way he escaped corsairs in the distant past, Rausaro prefers to silently keep to himself much of his time as a slave.
History: Rausaro was born in a cool winter to the Riverpaw Clan. This Clan, along with several others, lived in Holt Brinerock, a large cave near the mouth of the Mossflower River. Comfortable and hidden from the increasing number of corsair ships, the young otter helped to forage for all manners of edible while learning how to watch for and quietly avoid vermin and other predators. While it was a fairly quiet and boring existence, it was peaceful; the Holt traded for what they needed with dried fish, water shrimp, and a large stock of mother of pearl. The few corsair crews that managed to make it near the Holt were usually discouraged with traps or hit and run attacks. However, the clans of the Holt were unaware that they had made powerful enemies. At the insistence of an allied Corsair Captain, the leader of the Darkfire horde allowed for a few crews to borrow the skills of one of his most skilled trackers to hunt down the otters after one too many attack on the corsair foragers.
The end came suddenly in his 18th year. In the warm evening aftermath of the summer Hulaballo (the yearly otter gathering), the entire holt was raided. Most of the warriors were put to the sword, while the injured and young were divided up and stored within the holds of the various ships. The Holt’s valuables, such as the supplies of mother of pearl and dried foodstuffs, were stored in the lead ship, along with some of the more badly injured otters. While the original agreement had been for the corsairs to bring back the slaves and any loot they had found, the captain of the Sea Scorpion had other ideas. In the middle of a nightly berthing, he had silently slipped anchor with the treasure aboard, avoiding the gaze of the drunken lookouts on the allied ships. Unfortunately, Rau had been one of the slaves stored aboard the particular ship.
Over the next few months, the few otters aboard the ship sickened and died from poor care of wounds, until Rausaro was the last surviving slave on the ship. During this time, the tensions between the crew grew noticeably closer to blows, as they debated between keeping the cargo for themselves or returning; several close calls with Darkfire horde corsairs had left them worried about the wisdom of crossing a warlord. It was during this time that one of the corsairs, the female weasel in charge of watching the cargo, befriended Rau. Despite their initial antipathy towards one another, Rau quickly learned by eavesdropping through the ship’s deck that Rakka wasn’t trusted by either faction of the crew, as both sides assumed she was a spy for the other. Even more interesting, she eventually revealed to the otter that she had no wish to continue with the life she had. Eventually, a bargain was struck. In exchange for his freedom, Rausaro would help her to escape the increasingly dangerous situation on the ship.
At first, the plan went well. At night, she would lock the hold, and teach him how to fight; this carried on for several weeks. Unfortunately, despite her attempts to pass off the dull thumps in the cargo hold as “teaching the slave a lesson”, one of the crew had snuck into the hold and beheld the spectacle of a weasel training an otter. When he shouted in alarm, he had been pinned down by a deadly stiletto blow from the weasel. The crew, thinking hostilities had commenced between the factions, rushed onto the deck in drunken combat, not noticing the two figures clad in corsair gear skirting the combat until they jumped. Unfortunately, Rakka took an arrow in her shoulder. Rau did his very best in his weakened state to swim for both of them, but Rakka had rapidly lost consciousness, and by the time the exhausted and half drowned otter had made it to the shore, she had expired from her wounds.
Having left her body in the embrace of a willow by a quiet stream, Rausaro wandered north, armed with a newfound sense of freedom…and a sober outlook of the world.
In the following weeks, Rau headed northward, unaware of the exact locations of havens like Redwall, Noonvale, or Salamandastron. With his clan scattered, and no remaining friends, his only plan was to find more of his kind, or any other good beasts that could help him. In an attempt to flee from possible pursuers, he traveled North. While he hoped to avoid corsairs, he was unaware that Obsidious Bane's horde controlled the region
Despite his efforts to seek out and join another holt of otters, Rausaro was unable to find any of his kind. More disturbingly, the few settlements he did find were strangely abandoned without any sort of visible struggle. A few months later, he ran into a handful of otters under attack by slavers. Unfortunately, when he tried to assist them, he was knocked unconscious by a blow to the back of the head and captured alongside them.
After his capture, Rausaro was quickly thrown into the ranks of the other otterslaves, at mercy to the cruel and disturbing tendencies of what the otter soon learned was the Darkfire Horde. He currently is forced to help fish and forage for the horde with a crew of other slaves; the long chain on his ankle prevents his escape.
