Physical Appearance:
General--Possessions:
Quite like his namesake, Hart Lorrin is tall, light in color, and often has an pleasant, huggable appearance. He has quiet, effeminate features but a naturally slim body. Other parts of him make up for the thinness of his waistline, however: his pink-skinned ears and paws are both much larger than they are on many others. His fur is relatively long for a mouse's, too, though not to the point where it is a bother. Its shade is nearly exactly the same sandy-brown tone over his entire body except for a white patch covering all of his left paw and part of his chest.
Usually, he comes off - quite correctly - as both kind and stern. With a thin but pleasant mouth, drawn upwards at the corners in a perpetually wry expression, bright, mischievous eyes, and large, cute ears, he is clearly first and foremost a gentlebeast. But the way he holds himself rigidly upright, and the way he leads with his chin - neither are habits of someone who has never known danger. Stretching diagonally across his left forearm is a long scar he got from a fight with some vermin from his younger days.
Oddly enough, he gets his sharp, clear voice and lithe body from his mother and all of his 'cute' features from his father. Since his father's genes are much more predominant in Hart than his mother's are, he takes after him - they both have the almost cute, perpetually young look that runs in the family.
Attire--
Though Hart claims he has now officially retired from the business of wandering, he still dresses in travel clothes: long tunics and thick belts, most of which have places for a blade to be sheathed. He has not been at the abbey long enough to forgo these, but he has stopped carrying a blade with him at all times, which, to him, is a relief. However he keeps two thin blades in his room and takes them with him whenever he leaves the abbey walls. Most of his clothes are dark colors - olive green, deep red, or brown - as are his belts - which are either black or brown. Since he traveled so much up until recently, the cloth is beat up and, in places, repaired with differently colored thread. He wears no accessories.
Hart has several things of his own besides his clothes - for example, he owns a rough cloth pouch that he often ties onto his belt. In this he keeps: a thin copper wristband that belonged to his wife, a small length of thin rope just long enough to tie two things together, and his flask, which is usually empty. Also, he keeps two daggers in his room. They have plain handles and blades, and are considerably beat up from his wandering days.Personality:
The beginning of Hart’s life made a strong impression on him. Raised in the abbey, with Redwall ideals like kindness and patience, he grew up as the good kid, never breaking the rules even when he very much wanted to. This annoyed most of the other Dibbuns at the time, who thought he was incapable of having a bit of fun, but try as he might, Hart always went back to the rules. This continued for all of his life so far – rules, and following them, are important to him. He lives by the book as much as he can and only steps out of line when he feels there is no other option. Very attentive to a fault, he tries to correct anything about himself that he feels to be imperfect, no matter what it is. He is loyal to what he loves, viewing Redwall his only true home and Rachael as his only true love.Strengths:
Despite this, however, he has always been restless. Growing in the home of heroes like Martin the Warrior, Hart’s favorite pastime was to listen to tales of adventure and bravery and to dream about what was outside the abbey walls. As a young Redwaller, he loved to sit on the wall tops, daydreaming. As an adult, he is inclined to do the exact same. Hart cannot stay in one place for long, because, for him, ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’. Now that he is at Redwall again he misses wandering; while he was traveling he missed Redwall; when he was young he longed for anywhere but the Abbey. He is rarely content with what he has, always striving for something more, though he can never put his finger on what ‘more’ is. He is peaceful, but misses the valor required in battle; he is a fighter, but reminisces on the days when he did not have to know how to wield a blade. Hart is also prone to bouts of melancholy where he is inspired to do absolutely nothing at all. During these, it is hard to even get him out of his bed, let alone to do anything. While usually only occurring once or twice a season in order to let him get some rest, they have increased in frequency with the death of his wife. Hart often just sits in his room, playing with Rachael’s bracelet. Dibbuns are usually the only ones who can cheer him up since they make him think of his own days at Redwall.
Some who remember the steady, calm Hart from before he left to travel Mossflower wonder what happened there that changed him, for he came back very different. For one, while he had been generous to begin with, he learned co-dependency on the road. For him, it translated into a kind of severe selflessness: since he depended so much on his partner, whenever something happened, he would look immediately to them, ignoring whatever wounds or issues he himself had, no matter how severe. This simply became habit; he still thinks of others before himself. Also, where he was a great talker and very good at making friends, long days of hiking with nothing to say and spells where he saw no one else made him quiet and reserved. The large amount of time he spent thinking made him very aware of his own emotions, and being alone a lot allowed him to be free with what he allowed himself to feel. So, now that he is back at Redwall, he is much more of an emotional roller coaster since he does not try to hold anything back. However, when he is in a pressured situation, he is very dependable, and all of his emotional worries go out the door, leaving only a professional attitude.
Weaknesses:
- A decent fighter, though one that lacks formal training.
- Patient with other beasts, especially Dibbuns
- Good working knowledge of the Mossflower area
History/Background:
- Very sensitive to the subject of his wife
- Not much of a people person. He doesn't trust others easily, nor does he like letting anyone get close to him save the young Redwallers
- Prone to mood swings - melancholy and ennui leaves him listless, but happiness gives him a rush of energy
Hart grew up the son of kind Redwaller parents Minna and Hart Senior. From a very early age he took all the abbey's lessons to heart, living by the rules as much as he could. Hart Senior was overjoyed - his son was going to stay at Redwall for his entire life. However, Hart had other plans. He was easily distracted from work in the abbey by daydreams and stories about adventure and honor. He took to waking up early so as to watch the sun rise and to staying up late to watch it set again. Minna, unlike Hart Senior, was proud her son was thinking of other places other than the Abbey. She herself had been raised outside its walls, and so was happy her free spirit had transferred to her only child.Relationships:
When he was old enough that Hart Senior would let him go - which was several years after he was actually able to leave, since his father wanted to keep him at Redwall as long as possible - Hart took off for Salamandastron with the older wandering squirrel Sona Riback, determined to see the mountain. However, at 21, he was not a very experienced traveler, and he and Sona had to travel slowly. She used this opportunity, however, to teach him how to fight some, though she herself wasn't very good.
In truth, Hart never made it to Salamandastron. He was too eager a traveler, too curious about where this little path went or where that stream led to make good time, and Sona let him explore, being in no great hurry to get to the mountain herself. Eventually, however, she did have to leave. When she told Hart that they had to go straight to Salamandastron in order for Sona to meet a friend of hers, he was unhappy. But, by that time he knew that area of Mossflower wood fairly well, so Sona left him camping there. Alone for four seasons, Hart made himself a campsite, returning to it every day after his explorations. He was alone, and so talked to himself a great deal in order to keep himself company. Redwall was on his mind most of the time, and he missed it, but he never had any intention of going back.
Rachael was the first creature to stumble on his campsite since he had built it, and when he first saw her, Hart was shocked. Thin, not particularly pretty, but with a magnetic personality, he was drawn to her. She was moving to her grandparents' house to help them with their little farm, but took a few days off to stay with Hart. They became friends quickly, traveled together, and fell in love. Married at Rachael's grandparents' house, they stayed there for quite a while. Their lives were like a fairytale - peaceful, full of love and good food. Sometimes Hart and Rachael left together to travel around the countryside, but never really went far, always returning to her grandparents' after a season or so. Hart occasionally thought of going back to Redwall, but never felt the need to. His life was perfect with Rachael.
But, as always seems to happen in stories, disaster was right around the corner. A group of wayward vermin, separated from the rest of their tribe and searching for food and shelter, came across the little home in the woods and burnt it to the ground, killing both of Rachael's grandparents. Hart and Rachael herself were out on one of their little excursions at the time, heading back to the grandparents' house. They never saw it or learned of what happened there: the same group of vermin attacked them a day or so later, killing Rachael and scarring Hart's forearm. He barely got away. Distraught with grief and survivor's guilt, the mouse returned immediately to the place where he had lived when everything had been good and peaceful - Redwall abbey. He has been there for less than a half a season, now, and Rachael's death is still very fresh in his mind - he believes he should have been able to save her.
Other
- Father: Hart Lorrin Sr.. He and Hart are very close, though the latter doesn't talk to him much now.
- Mother: Minna Lorrin. Though Hart grew up closer to his father, he has a good relationship with his mother. Her strictness sometimes bothers him, and he doesn't talk to her as much since his return to Redwall, but everything is good.
- Wife (deceased) : Rachael Lorrin. Hart was devoted to her, having met Rachael while traveling. For a long time they were just companions, learning to rely on one another, and eventually were married. When she died during a vermin raid, Hart was devastated, and came back to Redwall immediately.
