Simply put, it's essentially a text-based, online, text based role-playing game in real-time. There aren't any real limitations on what your character can be, so long as it is a canonical species. You can create your very own, personalized areas. Say you find what you consider a fine spot for a house. You can build one there, if you really want to. We are currently a small community, and more members would certainly be welcome. It's much like a role-playing forum, but in a different format.
