The Varildes had always been a closely knit clan, and this particular branch was no exception. Though it had gone through tragedy after tragedy, and though they had begun drift, they always came back together again. They faced danger and they always came out relatively ok because they were a family.
And Eastpaw was not gonna let any bloody vermin ruin that. Not again. Not after failing his father the last time. He was meant to keep the family safe. It hadn’t even taken the glance he and South had shared at the meeting to know he was thinking the same. And when the two slipped away from the meeting, they discovered their younger siblings had the same idea. Crys and Nico had been waiting for them.
Eastpaw stuffed the last bit of provender into the scout’s knapsack. It was only the presence of the younger Varildes that made him force himself to even wait that long before he set out.
The sun was dying in the west as the four Varildes crept from the mountain, their shadows long in the late light.

Crystin Varilde tapped her footpaw impatiently upon the sand as her brothers and herself waited fro Eastpaw to pack up a knapsack of food. She didn't want to wait! She couldn't wait! She didn't have time to wait!
After trying to eavesdrop on the officers' meeting and having no luck, Crys had been shooed inside to listen to the Badger Lord explain what had happened. For indeed, someone had been taken as she heard. More than one hare to be precise. One of whom was Lani!!!
After standing in shock for a bit, Crys ran from the room, disregarding all orders of halting. No, it couldn't be. She just got her family back! She just had begun to remember somethings. And now those stinkin', rotten, vermin were back and took Lani. They probably mistook Lani for herself. Crys knew that they looked so much alike that the vermin wouldn't notice the difference.
It was all her fault. If she hadn't been captured, not of this would be happening. She might have still had a father and a happy family with plenty of wonderful memories. If she hadn't tried to escape, she wouldn't have brought the vermin to this wonderful mountain. It was all her fault. Now Lani was paying the price for her mistakes.
With that guilt laying heavily upon her heart, Crys threw open the door to her room and snatched the runners knives she had been given. She had to save Lani from the life she had on the ship. She couldn't let anything happen to Lani. She couldn't.
But before she could leave, Crys was confronted by Corporeal Devereux. It was an odd confrontation to tell you the truth. For neither of them said anything. The Corporeal just stood there, staring at her. Like, like. He knew what she wanted. it was like he knew what she was going to do. Then he calmly stepped aside from the door and continued up the stairs.
The only thing that kept Crystin from leaving right then and there was her brothers. Nico, Southpaw, and Eastpaw all had to tell her to wait until night fall when they had everything in line.
Now as Eastpaw came out of the mountain, and they started creeping off, Crys couldn't take it anymore! Sprinting ahead of her brothers, Crys ran for the woods. Tears streaming down her face as she ran, her eyes almost pink as she let go. She had to get to Lani! She had to....

OOC: Did she run IN the woods?
Malum had wandered almost all of her life. Looking fro someplace to stay. Being a vermin, this was easier said then done.
She was very dehydrated, and was hoping she could find some water. She just kept watching the ocean, wishing it was fresh water. Malum creeped through the woods, watching the mountain from afar. Suddenly, shefelt someone run into her, and she fell down.
Darn it! She thought, growling.
"Watch where you're going!" She saod, picking herself up.
Suddenly, she saw what ran into her. It was a hare from the mountain. Malum saw she had been crying, and backed away.
"Hey, you okay?" She asked, concerned.

Southpaw was waiting just outside for his siblings. He had a pack for each of them and they all had weapons. Southpaws being his small dagger which is the only other weapon he carried besides his fists. First Eastpaw came then Crystin, then Nico. Soon they were ready to set out. It was growing dark so it would be easier to get away.
Just as they were creeping along Cry's jumped up and sprinted ahead, South heard a sob come from her as she ran. He did the same motioning to the others. " It's dark enough and if we go quietly enough they won't hear us." He whispered, They ran as fast as they could till they came to the woods. Then Southpaw stopped all of a sudden. He saw Crystin run into something. And that something fell to the ground, it got back up growling and said.
"Watch where you're going!"
Then as if realizing what it was it ran into it backed away and said,
"Hey, you okay?" In a concerned voice. Southpaw guessed it wasn't any vermin. He went forward and asked. " Who are? And what are you doing?" He tried not to sound annoyed but they were rather in a hurry. " Look were kind of in a hurry. Were chasing vermin who took our sister and we have to catch them before they make it to their ships and get out to sea." He hoped he wasn't reveling too much of their plans. He got a closer look at the creature and saw he was wrong. He immediately regretted telling him. He couldn't think of anything to do, they couldn't kill it.

Malum looked up, and made out shapes. Joy! People! She thought, sourly. Hopefully not the see a ferret, kill it type... She gulped, and waaited for the next round of question inevitably coming.
"Who are? And what are you doing?"
"I'm Malum, And I was just walking along." Malum said, dusting herself off again. She fiddled with her cloak, trying not to seem nervous.
" Look were kind of in a hurry. Were chasing vermin who took our sister and we have to catch them before they make it to their ships and get out to sea."
Malum saw the creature take a closer look at her, and she blushed, relizing that he finally relized her species. She held up her hands in a nice way.
"Hey, no need to worry. I don't hang out with beasts like that. And maybe I could help you, if you let me." Malum said, throwing that last part out there. She gave a small smile and laughed, ending up just coughing. "Sorry, I'm just kinda dehydrated..."
Malum looked at the group, her heart sinking.
Even if I had to, I couldn't get through this goup if they decided to attack me... Please don't attack me! She thought.

Sitting, watching in horror as the hares around him whispered and worried, Nico Varilde had felt very cold. The only thing he could think to do was rub his paw where the haremaid Eli had grabbed it. Now, not only was he cold, he was angry. All he wanted in the world was a family that functioned, and, for this family, he had maintained hope for years that they could recover their sister when no one else had. He had been elated when they found her...
The voice of another person, not in the Varilde party, appeared from the darkness. It was female, and seemed to have bumped into Crys.
...and now he had lost yet another family member. Nico began to walk faster, catching up to the others. In his thoughts, he had fallen behind. Now, he inspected Malum carefully, weighing his wariness and current dislike of vermin against his better good nature.
His usual disposition won.
"You can help us?" He said, very quietly. Malum might be their ticket straight to Lani. He turned to Crys and the others. "A penny for your thoughts?"

OOC: DO we have a specific pattern of whoo posts and after who? Or do we just post willy nilly?
“Watch it yourself vermin!”
Malum's ears went flat against her skull, and her pupils narrowed for a moment before she pulled herself together.
Even if you did manage to kill the hare, you'd be dead before you know it... She thought.
“We don’t need yore ‘elp.”
Malum rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, a group of young hares are gonna manage a recue mission on a ship full of corsairs armed to the teeth!" She said sarcastically. "The only rescueing is gonna have to be done by another idiot to save you guys!"
Malum stopped here to calm herself down.
"You're gonna get on the ship, the corsairs are gonna look at you supidly, and then they'll charge and you'll be dead... Dead or taken captive..." Malum said, thinking back to that one season where she hitched a ride on a corsair boat. "Hmmm... Captains don't really pay attention to which crew member is which and such... Usually... so if one of you guys manages to grab a corsair, EACH, not raise suspiscioun, and manage to look at act like drunken corsairs, grab your pal, escape with your lives, and not be trailed and shot down, THEN you'll survive."
Malum finished calmly, and waited for either the next question, accusation, or action.

Eastpaw’s anger was at a low simmer, a heat that drove his determined march through the sands, but which did not cloud his judgment just yet. He saw Crys race ahead, and picked up his pace. The day had been long, but now night was swiftly upon them. The tide was going out. Likely, the vermin hadn’t even waited that long to ship out.
"Watch where you're going!"
“Watch it yourself vermin!” Eastpaw said, stepping forward, paws at the ready. Of course his brother had to get into a conversation with it. Didn’t South realize they were in a hurry? They didn’t have time for idle chitchat with this ferret! “We don’t need yore ‘elp.” He said brusquely, his accent heavier than usual, “An’ Ah could no care less about yore ‘ealth.”
"A penny for your thoughts?"
“Ah say we leave, Nico!” East said, becoming more impatient. “We need ta find a ship!”

((Ooc: We normally post making sure that everyone has posted before you did.(or that's what I normally do anyways) I personally think Willy-Nilly is hard to post with because you leave people out you were talking too and so on....))
As Crystin ran through the woods, she wasn't really paying much attention to where she was going, and truthfully she didn't care. With all the self-blame she placed upon her chest, she just wanted it all to start over again, so maybe, maybe this wouldn't have happened. It was all her fault and she knew it. She had to get Lani back and tell her how sorry she was....
SMACK! Crys felt somebeast collide with her as they both when sprawling backwards. Landing hard on her back, Crys quickly sat up, her daggers in paw, ready to bite whoever-ran-into-her's head off.
"Watch where you're going!
Crystin was about to growl out a reply when Eastpaw came bounding up behind her.
“Watch it yourself vermin!”
"Hey, you okay?"
"Why would ye care ye stinkin' snivelin' thievin' sea-scum!" Crystin snarled. She so just wanted to slice this ferret's throat off and continue hunting for Lani. The ship could be out to sea by now...
"Who are? And what are you doing?"
"I'm Malum, And I was just walking along."
" Look were kind of in a hurry. Were chasing vermin who took our sister and we have to catch them before they make it to their ships and get out to sea."
"Hey, no need to worry. I don't hang out with beasts like that. And maybe I could help you, if you let me. [...] Sorry, I'm just kinda dehydrated..."
“We don’t need yore ‘elp. [...] An’ Ah could no care less about yore ‘ealth.”
"A penny for your thoughts?"
“Ah say we leave, Nico! [...] We need ta find a ship!”
"Yeah, a group of young hares are gonna manage a recue mission on a ship full of corsairs armed to the teeth! [...] The only rescueing is gonna have to be done by another idiot to save you guys! [...] You're gonna get on the ship, the corsairs are gonna look at you supidly, and then they'll charge and you'll be dead... Dead or taken captive...[...] Hmmm... Usually... so if one of you guys manages to grab a corsair, EACH, not raise suspiscioun, and manage to look at act like drunken corsairs, grab your pal, escape with your lives, and not be trailed and shot down, THEN you'll survive."
The plan was good, it may or may not work. All Crystin cared about was the fact that the longer they stood her talking to this dead beat the ship got farther and farther away. What happens if they don't make it in time? What if they never find the ship? What if Lani is forced to suffer what Crys went through, but worse...NO! Crys would hunt that bloody ship down, rescue Lani, and burn that thing to the ground!!!!!
Gripping her daggers tighter, Crystin looked up at East. Her eyes still a light pink, trying to display her anger and urgency to go, NOW!

It had been a long, tiring day and Ripley pinched the bridge of her nose, annoyed by a steadily elevating headache. The young runner had had a busy morning, a disappointing and almost depressing afternoon followed by a far more disappointing and extremely infuriating evening.
She'd watched the hullabaloo from a distance, with the dark glances being exchanged and the frenzy between the Long Patrol officers. Ripley wasn't a nosey type; if it didn't involve her, she just didn't care. But it involved her quickly enough. Even though she tried to keep to herself and stay out of it, she was quickly roped into a reconnaissance mission. She wasn't the greatest scout, but she was darn close. In any case, none of the Varildes would be asked to help, and she learned why quickly enough. Changing quickly into her dark forest-toned tunic and strapping her rapier to her hip, she hurried off south to the woodlands
The mission was largely unsuccessful by her standards. Of course, she'd only consider a mission of this variety successful if she outright found the vermin and caused some issue for them; she was never very good at keeping herself out of trouble when the situation presented itself. But there was no sign of vermin. No sign of the captives. No one. It was eerily empty in fact, as all the inhabitants of the mountain had been herded indoors.
She'd been able to track them to the water where, of course, all sign of them ended. That was a pretty good sign of what had happened. But ever the thorough scout, she explored the possibility that they had simply crossed the inlet and met land on the opposite shore. She found a long limb and waded into the water, using the limb to judge depth. It dropped quickly beyond her height. It was extremely unlikely they swam the distance with unwilling creatures. Also, there was no craft on the other shore that they could have used. She considered the possibility that they had stashed the craft, but from her vantage she could see no clue that a craft had been dragged ashore, with no disruption of the foliage.
Well, that was that, she supposed. Feeling unsuccessful and now soaking wet, she trudged back the way she had come, mumbling as it grew darker and colder. She froze and her ears perked as she heard voices nearby. Nobeast should be around right now. Salamandastron was on a lockdown of sorts. Following the source, she crept quietly through the brush, finding the angry and bristling Varilde brood arguing with a ferret-child. Despite the creature's age, she automatically assumed she was up to no good. Not that it really mattered. Even a proper, full-grown ferret armed-to-the-teeth couldn't take a family of Long Patrol hares. Truly, she didn't think one could take any one of the Varildes in their current state. She listened to the exchange.
“We don’t need yore ‘elp.” ... “An’ Ah could no care less about yore ‘ealth.” [...] "A penny for your thoughts?" [...] “Ah say we leave, Nico!” ... “We need ta find a ship!”
"I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the rules... and certainly not a devotee of 'em... but I'm fairly certain that's not how this works," Ripley said as she popped up, and leaned against a nearby tree. She didn't sound as if she was admonishing them, and she certainly didn't sound surprised. If anything, she seemed amused and a bit thoughtful. She'd be the last creature to try and stop them. Not only would it be near impossible, but what business was it of hers?

"I'm Malum, And I was just walking along."
"Hey, no need to worry. I don't hang out with beasts like that. And maybe I could help you, if you let me."
Southpaw looked at the others. " What should we do? Do we need Malum's help?" He wasn't sure if they needed any help or not. Then Eastpaw started in. South was afraid this was going to happen. He tried to interfere because he knew if Eastpaw got started they would take a while.
“We don’t need yore ‘elp. [...] An’ Ah could no care less about yore ‘ealth.” "A penny for your thoughts?"
“Ah say we leave, Nico! [...] We need ta find a ship!”
"Yeah, a group of young hares are gonna manage a recue mission on a ship full of corsairs armed to the teeth! [...] The only rescueing is gonna have to be done by another idiot to save you guys! Southpaw took East aside and started whispering to him. " You know what she says is true and if we argue then we'll be too late and they'll get away. We have to think about it instead of just throwing away her ideas we all now its a sound plan. So just think about it."
"I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the rules... and certainly not a devotee of 'em... but I'm fairly certain that's not how this works,"
Southpaw nearly jumped when he heard Ripley's voice. He wasn't surprised she was here though. South looked at her. " So what would you suggest then Ripley? Its the only plan we have and if we stand here all night arguing we won't get anywhere except further away from the ship and our sister." He was starting to get angry himself at the delay. It didn't please him that Ripley popped up out of nowhere and started throwing away the only ideas they had. " Come on we have to hurry" He said and turning toward where he saw the ship he set off at a brisk pace.

"Why would ye care ye stinkin' snivelin' thievin' sea-scum!"
Malum took a step back, but felt her anger rising. Sure, leave it to me to find the one group of hares that don't know how to call someone by their name!
"As you can tell, I am not, Stinky, snivelin', or a sea scum, as you would say, rabbit." She said, not being able to supress her anger on that last part.
"I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the rules... and certainly not a devotee of 'em... but I'm fairly certain that's not how this works."
Malum spun towards the new voice in suprise. She was ready for a fight, but seeing how relaxed the hare looked, she also calmed down. Her ears began flicking in annoyance.
" What should we do? Do we need Malum's help?"
"Ah! One finally uses the name!" Malum said, happy that one remembered it.
" So what would you suggest then Ripley? Its the only plan we have and if we stand here all night arguing we won't get anywhere except further away from the ship and our sister." [...] " Come on we have to hurry"
Malum turned towards the hare leaving, and started to follow him.
" He's right you know... The tide comes in at night, and you better hurry before they get un-beached and sail away... Of course they would wait until about midnight to try something like that.. Well, you still should hurry." Malum said to the other hares.

“Aye, jest wot we need.” Eastpaw said sarcastically, cutting off the vermin’s spiel. “Yore opinion.” His big paws worked in and out of fists as he spoke, and his ears twitched anxiously. He was quite obviously not anxious to be there, and was only holding himself there with enormous exertion of will.
He returned Crys’ look, at least one member of his family was still sane. The other two were still trying to reason with it! He stood in place though, absolutely refusing to split up his family again. If it meant sitting through this inane conversation, he would stay by his brothers and sister. Bad things happened when they were apart.
"I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the rules... and certainly not a devotee of 'em... but I'm fairly certain that's not how this works,"
“It doesn’t matter.” Eastpaw snapped, turning to the newcomer -- Ripley. She certainly was hard to miss with all that white fur. “Ah willna stan’ by again… Ah willna allow my family to be destroy’d again… rules or no.”
" You know what she says is true and if we argue then we'll be too late and they'll get away. We have to think about it instead of just throwing away her ideas we all now its a sound plan. So just think about it."
“A sound plan?” Eastpaw hissed back at his twin in an undertone. “There’s nay sound about it! We’re none o’ us vermin, we’d stand oot like th’ forge inna dark cave!”
"Ah! One finally uses the name!" Malum said, happy that one remembered it.
Eastpaw said nothing, merely turning on his heel and following Southpaw. He really didn’t trust himself to say anything further, but a voice behind him made him pause and turn.
" He's right you know... The tide comes in at night, and you better hurry before they get un-beached and sail away... Of course they would wait until about midnight to try something like that.. Well, you still should hurry."
“Ye really think a slave ship wants to wait for the bloody tide this close to the mountain they just stirr’d up like a ‘ive o’ angry ‘ornets??” He asked incredulously before noticing that the ferret was following them. He planted his tall boxer’s body straight in her path, arms crossed. “Oh no. Ye’re no comin’ wi’ us!”

"As you can tell, I am not, Stinky, snivelin', or a sea scum, as you would say, rabbit."
Crystin's temper flared. She had taken enough! "Ye call mea rabbit again and you'll be dead meat walking ye blood, good for nothing....." Crys unleashed a barrage of rather, "colorful" insults at the ferret. Blood rising in her ears, Crys didn't care. She had to go and save Lani. And if this vermin, was going to stand in her way, it was going to pay the price...
“Aye, jest wot we need. Yore opinion.”
Crystin met the eyes of her brother. He wanted to go just as much as she did. A tear started to well up in Crys' pink eye. They weren't going make it. But they had too. They had too. She had too...
Southpaw pulled Eastpaw away and held a brief whispered conversation. What about Crys didn't know, but it did make Cry a bit more up set. Looking out through the woods, Crys bit her lip. It was time to go....
"I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the rules... and certainly not a devotee of 'em... but I'm fairly certain that's not how this works."
“It doesn’t matter. Ah willna stan’ by again… Ah willna allow my family to be destroy’d again… rules or no.”
" What should we do? Do we need Malum's help?"
"Ah! One finally uses the name!"
" So what would you suggest then Ripley? Its the only plan we have and if we stand here all night arguing we won't get anywhere except further away from the ship and our sister. [...]Come on we have to hurry"
And with that South began to bound off with East at his heals. Crys hurried after them. Dagger out and gripping it tightly, eyes a rosy pink, a bit of blood in her mouth from biting her lip, Crys felt like sobbing. She was too late. She knew it deep in her heart. But she had to make things right. Even if she had to go back to what she was, to what she had to suffer through. She would do it all again. Oh Lani....
Spinning around. Crys saw East standing broad shouldered in front of the ferret. Crys was glad East was standing up to the ferret because she probably looked like a wreck right now and now...Now she was ready to rip somebeast's head off.....And ask questions later....

Ripley just stayed there, leaned up against the tree, pretending to take particular interest in a spot of dirt on the pad of her paw as she listened to the whole exchange. They were all crazy as far as she was concerned. Of course they had a right to be upset, and she could certainly understand their desire to set out on their own after their sibling; she'd do the same thing. And that was why she was not trying to stop them.
Of course, that still didn't mean she thought they were doing the right thing. She knew they weren't. Her initial thought was to just leave well enough alone and let the Varilde clan do what they must, but she got a quick glance at Crys's face as she turned away from them. The younger haremaid's eyes were tinted pink, the beginning stages of bloodwrath. Ripley had learned at some point that the Varilde group suffered from bloodwrath and she just now remembered the fact.
Groaning, Ripley rubbed her eyes with frustration. If the Varildes managed to find the vermin, they would be a danger not only to the vermin, but to themselves and the innocent captives. They'd be walking into a slaughter. How could she possibly let this go on now? But she couldn't stop them. Controlling them would be akin to controlling the weather.
Looking up again, Ripley assessed the situation. The longer they were stalled, the angrier and more agitated they were going to get and the more likely they were going to lose control of themselves. Making a decision, she pushed herself away from the tree.
Clapping her paws twice, she beckoned them off. "All right you lot, let's get goin' on, we don't have time to waste." She waved at paws at them as if sweeping them off. "Shoo, shoo."
She turned to Malum then, trying to get the ferret's attention before she riled up Eastpaw anymore. "Ferret, you're best to leave 'em be..." She lifted an eyebrow then, getting a good look at Malum. "What're you ferret, twelve?" she finally acknowledged. "Even if they wanted anythin' to do with your help, you're much too young t'be out here and gettin' yourself into danger. You need t'go somewhere away an' safe and not get in the way. Won't do anybeast much good if they have t'save your hide, too."

"Ye call mea rabbit again and you'll be dead meat walking ye blood, good for nothing...."
Malum had to choke back a growl, her temper flaring dramatically. Her ears folded back flat on her head, and her pupils turned into slits. She had to restrain herslef from pulling out her sword, simply placing her paw on it.
“Aye, jest wot we need. Yore opinion.”
Malum was at odds with these bunnies. She knew that. She sighed, her ears rising and her temper fading.
“It doesn’t matter. Ah willna stan’ by again… Ah willna allow my family to be destroy’d again… rules or no.”
"Yeah, everyone here really cares what the rules say!" Malum said sarcastically.
So what would you suggest then Ripley? Its the only plan we have and if we stand here all night arguing we won't get anywhere except further away from the ship and our sister. [...]Come on we have to hurry
Ye really think a slave ship wants to wait for the bloody tide this close to the mountain they just stirr’d up like a ‘ive o’ angry ‘ornets?? Oh no. Ye’re no comin’ wi’ us!
Malum let out a small growl, but choked it back before much wen through her lips. She looked up at the hare, and gave an amused smile.
" You know, in most places, it's considered rude to block someone's path while they are walking." Then she got serious, "Fine, I'll be happy to sit back and watch you guys carry-on with your little suicide mission. Go ahead!"
"Ferret, you're best to leave 'em be..." [...] "What're you ferret, twelve?" [...] "Even if they wanted anythin' to do with your help, you're much too young t'be out here and gettin' yourself into danger. You need t'go somewhere away an' safe and not get in the way. Won't do anybeast much good if they have t'save your hide, too."
Malum stared at the hare, her anger rising.
"I'm THIRTEEN for your information. And I ahev been in tons of danger! I can take care of myself too so butt out! I don't WANT to hide away and let this whole group of hares be slaughtered! You must at least have the sense to see that this is suicude!" Malum said, exasperated.

"Yeah, everyone here really cares what the rules say!" Malum said sarcastically.
Eastpaw glared at the ferret, his fur on end and his eyes dark. “Keep ‘t up lass. A bloody lot of good your mouth will do ye when yore head is parted from yore body.” She was asking for trouble, it seemed to the hare. Eastpaw was in a dark place, a place restricted by a narrow view, he knew not what caused him to continuously stay his paw, but he did. His eyes passed over Ripley without a hint of recognition, he looked at the remnants of his family and felt a burning inside him.
" You know, in most places, it's considered rude to block someone's path while they are walking." Then she got serious, "Fine, I'll be happy to sit back and watch you guys carry-on with your little suicide mission. Go ahead!"
But Eastpaw had already turned away, passing into the darkness. He called to his siblings, motioning them to follow him. There was a skiff hidden around here somewhere, a small boat they could manage and use to chase down the sea vermin.
{Great writing with you all, this is fun. Should I start a 'boat' thread?}

Southpaw was gettng angrier at this delay. " Why can't you stop arguing!" He snapped. Then he started off with East and Crys at his heel. He started to run and hoped they wouldn't be to late. Eastpaw called to the the others and they were off. South remembered there being a small boat hidden on the shore somewhere. He and East had once before gone out in it when they were littler when they weren't other wise allowed to. Southpaw was having a hard time keeping his emotions under control. He remembered what it was like last me they had lost a family member. If they did not find Lani they would go through the same thing. He couldn't bare it! He ran on through the woods dodging roots and branches and hoping they would make it. Just then his paw caught on a root and he fell, he stayed on the ground catching his breath. He got up again a little later and started off again and soon came to the sandy beach.
(OOC: Yeah I'm ready too!)
