Name: Lindy Glassfire. Also known as Lindy of Butterfly Vale, Lindy Starfall, Lindy Chrysanthemum, and Lindy Archereye.
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Species: Harvest Mouse
Occupation: Self-proclaimed alchemist, inventor, glassblower, blacksmith, carpenter, mason, tailor, locksmith, and beekeeper.
Physical Appearance:
Lindy is a harvest mouse, and as such she has soft, thick, red-gold fur with a cream colored underbelly, throat, and eye markings. She is fat nor skinny, tall nor short, but she hardly blends into a crowd due to the manner in which she chooses to dress (and conduct herself, but we’ll get to that later). Lindy is not a mousemaid prone to wearing dresses unless the circumstance calls for it, and in Lindy’s line of work that doesn’t happen very often. No, this harvest mouse spends most of her life tromping around in your standard shirt, tunic, and breeches all held together at the waist with a sturdy belt. The breeches are usually gray, the shirt sleeves usually rolled up to her elbows, and the tunic generally being old, patched, and either blue or green (we can’t be sure anymore). On her head there seems to be an ever present pair of goggles, self-crafted and proudly worn. They are nothing truly exceptional, being made of wire, glass, and threadbare ribbon. Last but not least, Lindy wears tight black gloves that lace up the side with ribbon and extend all the way to the middle of her forearms.
Possessions
Lindy attempts to travel light, and to her that means cramming her journal, maps, writing tools, knife set, wood carving kit, alchemy box, standard glassblowing tubes, cooking supplies, canteen, cloak, and blanket into what ends up being a very worn, very heavy, overstuffed travel pack. Needless to say she’s pretty slow on the road. Whenever she settles down for a season or two she never has trouble accumulating new things, from clothes, to books, to tools.
When it comes to weapons, Lindy is more adept at crafting them than using them. As it is, her weapon of choice would be the bow, and she is a semi-adept archer.
Personality:
Lindy is a thinker and a worker, often wrapped up in her own schemes, ideas, and plans. She is skilled in a myriad of different areas, though only in beekeeping is she truly an expert. The mouse is clever to say the least, though we wouldn’t go so far to say she’s genius (not that she’d be half as modest). However, her “genius” and crafting abilities has left little room in the way of relationship skills. Lindy would sooner calculate how far she could launch you from a trebuchet, than be the first to make introductions.
The mouse is a fairly motivated, passionate, and focused creature, and enjoys inventing, traveling, and spending time with those she claims as friends. She is friendly enough, but far from your average “skipping, singing, sunshine-spreading” mousemaid. She jokes, laughs, and makes merry along with the rest of us—she just makes sarcastic jokes, often laughs at the expensive of others, and makes merry with a little more alcohol that most.
Strengths:
Lindy is a good friend to those she claims as her friends, being loyal to a fault. The key phrase there is “claims as her friends”. If she doesn’t view you as a friend she probably cares about the mug of ale you’re holding more than your well being. Another strength of Lindy’s is her intelligence. She really is a clever little mouse, being a fast learner able to grasp the basic concepts of a thing and then run with it. She is largely self-taught in the majority of her craft skills.
Weaknesses:
Many of Lindy’s weaknesses are merely strengths overdone or skewed in some fashion. For instance, she is an honest mouse. Sort of. She’ll honestly and without hesitation tell you that you’re a complete idiot.
Needless to say, her frank nature has landed her in trouble on more than one occasion. But it’s not the only area of Lindy’s life that could use some polishing. She’s smart, right? Yeah, books and studies and skills and things, but she has yet to learn how powerful a kind and encouraging word can be. Her knowledge also works to fuel an ego that doesn’t need any help staying above average size.
Another weakness the mouse has is a firm fear of drowning. She can’t swim to save her life, and avoids the water (particularly the ocean) as much as possible.
History:
Lindy was born the seventh daughter to an average family of harvest mice in a faraway place known as Butterfly Vale. The place is, apparently, as boring and peaceful as it sounds, and Lindy ran away the first chance she got. The mice of Butterfly Vale, however, are expert bee keepers, and before Lindy left it appears she did manage to learn all there is to know about the family trade.
She traveled with various companions over the years, some she called friend, and some she didn’t. Most are dead or haven’t been heard from for seasons by now, and it was from many of them that Lindy learned the ways of the road and picked up several interests and skills. Her travels began in the warm southern lands, and she slowly made her way north to the mountains over a period of five years. She spent a considerable bit of time with a mountainous tribe of squirrels where she learned to smith and attempted to pick up archery. However, her time there came to an abrupt end when the tribe was overrun by neighboring vermin and the now twenty year old mouse found herself out on the open road again.
Her time on the road has often been fraught with hardship, from the menial such as her inability to cook anything that tastes remotely like food, to the more somber experiences of losing friends in encounters with vermin or extreme weather conditions. It is such a life that built up the mouse’s rather rough and rude exterior and covers a more carefree, trusting inner nature.
All in all, Lindy attempts to keep her past something of a mystery. This is in part due to not being a very open beast to begin with, but also because she has some deep running scars and secrets. Many rumors about her history seem to center around the notion that she was at one time engaged to a handsome young mouse that died in battle. The truth of the matter, however, is known to very few. Lindy hightailed it out of Butterfly Vale in an attempt to escape not only the boring life, but get away from a particularly persistent male mouse who seemed to think the sun, moon, and stars revolved around her. Lindy had always been smug about her escape until her return home many years later, when she expected to find her old pursuer happily married and raising a family. Instead she learned that the mouse had gone after her in hopes of proposing marriage (one last time), and had been found a week later frozen in the snow, clutching a battered gold ring to his chest.
Lindy’s ego appeared to be on the up and up ever since this news, but in reality the mouse was struggling with the notion that she was a terrible creature unworthy of any form of love or kindness. Her academic efforts doubled, and she set out on the road again and again, hoping to find an escape from the terrible guilt that seemed to follow her everywhere.
After many seasons, Lindy has still not forgiven herself for the death of the mouse and a number of other dead companions whose passing she associates with some fault on her part. She tends to stay in places for shorter amounts of time these days, typically only long enough to restock her food supplies, exchange basic news, and repair any of her usual belongings.
Relationships:
Lindy has few real friends left, and they are scattered far and wide across the realm of Mossflower. She is not close to any of her relatives, as they all still reside in Butterfly Vale and she has not been home in many years.
Other
As an inventor and alchemist, Lindy is able to craft a multitude of unusual (and occasionally useful) artifacts. These include but are not necessarily limited to: trebuchets, battering rams, puzzle games (wooden or metal), hourglasses, sleeping draughts, various poisons, sneezing powder, spectacles, and mirrors.
