Name: Vyruss Deadmoon
Aliases: The Hellbat, Vyruss Rattlewing
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Species: Bat
Occupation: Leader of the Black Mass vermin horde
Physical Appearance:
Vyruss is a leanly built, sinewy bat. His fur is completely black, appearing as if it has been charred. His eyes burn with a red fervour, like twin pools of blood. The leathery webs of his wings have been burned away, leaving only the muscled frames. From these, he hangs the bones and skulls of the warlords he has defeated, which rattle bone-chillingly with his every movement, earning him his title of Rattlewing.
Possessions
Vyruss possesses eight steel claw-blades merged with finger holsters, which he slips onto his to do battle. His only other possession is the banner of the Black Mass, which he occasionally bears; a bleeding rat skull with flames burning in its eye sockets, set in red against a black cloth, adorned with a polecat skull and raven plumage.
Personality:
Vyruss comes across as an impassive, emotionless beast. His icy visage hides a cunning, shrewd mind which is constantly in motion. He isn't a believer in rash charges and such schemes which sacrifice several hordebeasts, instead preferring to win his battles via sly, underhanded methods which entail a minimum amount of losses. To some degree he is also a believer in mercy, but only when it suits his purposes; for example, he will offer the option to survivors of an enemy horde to join him, in order to cover casualties and bloster his forces; although to be fair the other choice is death. For all his shrewdness, however, he can become obsessive when he sets his mind to something.
Strengths:
Unusually for a bat he can see perfectly well in daylight.
Cunning and shrewd.
Swift, agile fighter.
Weaknesses:
Vyruss' burnt wings mean he can't fly.
Can be obsessive.
History:
Vyruss Deadmoon originated from the bat colony at Bat Mountpit. When he was suckling newborn the cave system was attacked by a vermin band, who destroyed the bat's ancient home by setting it on fire. Vyruss somehow survived the fire, but at the cost of his wings being burned away. He was captured by the vermin band, and was raised as a slave to them. His early seasons were full of hardship;he was hammered on the anvil of life and a result grew into a hardy, wiry beast with a mind like a coiled spring.
One night leader of the band, an ex-sea rat, was drunk on rum. In his drunken state he enertained himself with manhandling the slave and hitting him without reason. Vyruss endured the humiliation, as always; but when the rat began to smash his head against a rock, he snaped.... and tore the rat's throat out with his teeth.
The vermin band, of which only five remained, initimidated by this sudden show of savagery, begged to be spared. Vyruss was established as leader of the band; but the former slave had grander plans. The band travelled the wilderness and swamplands between Salamandastron and Mossflower, recruiting solitary vermin. Soon the band had grown to a score. Vyrrus' next tactic was to attack other wandering bandits and assimilate the survivors into his small force; slowly but steadily, the small horde grew into a threat. Other vermin warlords attempted to erase this new menace; but Vyruss' cunning tactics foiled every one. Many times, the tactic of survivor assimilation was used and reused, but on a greater scale; eventually the horde had reached hundreds in number. By bribing a flock of magpies, Vyruss also acquired a good scouting force.
Now, with a horde of experiences warbeasts backing him, the treasures and fortresses of the land were Vyruss' for the taking...
