Name: Colonel Kenyon Arias Wildlough
Gender: Male
Age: 37yrs
Species: European River Otter
Occupation: Armsmaster for the Castle and Colonel of the Green Clan Regiment
Physical Appearance:
Kenyon tops out at six-two, with broad shoulders and a warrior’s muscled build, he tends to stick out in a crowd. His thick fur is rather shaggy and dark mahogany in color. His underbelly and throatfur is cream in color, contrasting nicely with the dark mahogany fur. With his green eyes, not hazel or gold-flecked but pure emerald green, he is quite a handsome otter.
He wears a russet tunic with a wide, white woven belt, despite his personal belief that white will only get dirty and should only be worn for special occasions. Mona gave the belt to him as a gift some years ago. Since the tunic opens at the front and does not have buttons, it sometimes gapes open to show his chest. The tunic extends a little past his hips and is belted at his waist.
When on patrol or whenever he deems necessary he dons a dark sharkskin belt and harness, the harness provides a holster for his javelin, which can be seen over his right shoulder, convenient for him to grab with his left paw. He has no tattoos or piercings.
He has various scars from many battles, most noticeable are the large chunk he is missing from his left ear, there is also a deep scar behind the ear, where the cutlass continued its path and narrowly missed killing him. There is a round, puckered arrow scar on his right bicep, and claw marks from a wildcat, scoring across his nose, left shoulder and right side.
Possessions/weapons
Clothing- His regular tunics, plus his uniform; both dress and ordinary.
Accessories- Not a jewelry guy, he nevertheless wears a pair of red and cream woven bracelets, one on either wrist. A gift from Danju, they are childishly braided and knotted, but he cherishes them anyway. He also has a plain gold wedding ring on his left paw.
He has two belts he wears regularly, a plain white woven one and his sharkskin belt and javelin harness.
Weapons- He is proficient in many weapons, but his favorite is the javelin. Perfect for throwing or stabbing, they are a versatile weapon. His javelin is made of hard dark driftwood, a little heavier and longer than most short otter javelins.
Personality:
A solid otter in both looks and nature, Kenyon is not quick to anger and quick to forgive. Rather emotions build up like storm-clouds behind the mountains, a slow and roiling wave. It takes him time to express any strong emotion like anger or grief or even joy, but when it comes it is in a moment of lost control. He tends to hold grudges, remembering things long after Mona has forgotten them.
He learned swiftly in childhood, after saying words he shouldn’t, that controlling his temper was a good idea. Still, it takes a lot of time for him to anger, and he finds this is a good thing the older he gets.
Loyal and fierce in protection of his loved ones, Kenyon is not an otter you want against you. He loves his wife, Mona, or Mo, as he calls her, and shares her grief for the loss of their son, Danju. He still believes that somehow they will find him again, or he will find them.
Blessed with plenty of patience and calm, Kenyon provides a balance to Mona’s impetuousness and a shoulder for her when she needs it. He is not a flighty creature, his paws and mind both solidly on the ground. Kenyon has a good head for strategy, and can be counted on to come up with a plan when one is needed.
Strengths:
Patience- Kenyon is blessed with plenty of patience, fortunately for him, as his mate seems to possess little. She does try, however, but where she lacks he makes up, and vice versa.
Friendly- Everybeast gets along well with Kenyon. Though he is not talkative and overly demonstrative, he possesses a sort of quiet friendliness that draws others in.
Weaponwork- He is very good at what he does, and what that is is teach young and old alike weaponry. He is more than competent in each weapon that he teaches, and he has a knack for seeing what others are good at, or will be good at.
Weaknesses:
Dyslexia- A smart otter, Kenyon would nevertheless be diagnosed with dyslexia were he in our world. Words move around as he reads them, letters wiggle as he writes them. It drives him to distraction, and could even reduce him to tears of frustration when he was young. He much prefers to listen to others tell stories, though he is stubborn about writing for himself.
Temper- Slow to get going, it is also hard to stop, and this can especially get him into trouble in battle. It has been theorized that he has the bloodwrath, and of course they’re right.
History:
Born in early summer, he is the youngest child of Elias and Emali Wildlough, of the clan Wildlough. He has two brothers, four and five years older than him, and a sister, two years older. He was born in Holt Summerdell, and grew up there as part of a large ‘family’. He was never alone as a child, always surrounded by children both younger and older than himself. But his favorite was a young otter maid, the daughter of the high queen. They were good friends, almost never seen apart from each other.
Eventually as he grew up, they grew slightly apart, him going on to more grown-up things while she was still tossing mud balls at unsuspecting otters. He had always had a particular interest in weaponry and warfare, and when he was twelve officially became a special student of the Castle Armsmaster.
Kenyon proved to be a quick study, even surpassing his master in some ways, as can happen. When he was sixteen he enlisted in the Green Clan Regiment, he served there for two years, fighting well alongside his comrades in battle.
When he was 18 he left Green Isle to see some of the world. Three years later he returned, to find his old friend Mona all grown up. He soon discovered that his childhood feelings had grown into something more than friendship, but held back, silent. She, after all, still saw him as the half-older brother, half-friend she always had, and she was to be high rhulain one day. His highest goal was to maybe become armsmaster.
He took up a position as assistant to the current armsmaster, now promoted to lieutenant. (22) He was progressing along quite well in his new post, he got to see Mona every day, even if it was still only as a friend. Months went by and Mona’s 18th birthday approached. All of Green Isle was excited for the coming of age celebration. It was only a few days to go when one day the high queen, Mona’s mother, never awakened from her sleep.
It turned the once cheery Castle into a dreary fortress, every otter on the Isle mourned, none more deeply than Mona. It was nearly a week before he got up the courage to go see how she was doing. He stayed by her side that year, helping her get past her mother’s death and falling even more in love with the beautiful ottermaid. Finally, just before her 19th birthday, he proposed. (23) To his great joy she accepted, and they were married on her official coronation day.
The Regiment was returning from a small series of sea battles with pirates when Danju was born. (24) The baby otter was nearly a month old by the time his father got to to meet him, both were equally enchanted. Kenyon was a major now, and armsmaster in face of his master's retirement, but seasons of peace passed before he was once again tested in battle.
Those battles were the last ones, the next four years beckoned in peace. There wasn’t so much as a sneeze of vermin activity, and even the cantankerous tribes got along for once. They had many visitors in those years, and as Danju grew into a sturdy young lad, it was discovered that the old rhulain, Mona’s mother, had relatives on another Isle. It was decided that they would visit them, and one fine spring day the Vogager set forth for Green Isle.
It never made it. Hit by a storm mid-journey, it was also attacked by a corsair ship. Every able otter was out on deck, armed to the teeth and battling fiercely. Kenyon led his otters in a furious charge against the vermin, driving them from the ship. It was then that he saw Danju.
Just four years old, Danju was only a little tyke when he wandered out on deck, frightened of the storm and in search of his mother. Kenyon was just reaching him, he burst out of a knot of searats just as a grinning fox reached down and picked him up. Danju started screaming in earnest now, only one thought in his head. Mama! He wanted Mama! (28)
Kenyon went absolutely crazy, his vision turned red and black and he roared out his battlecry as he fought to get at the fox as he retreated to his ship. He nearly made it too, before he was cut down from behind, a ferret with a rusted cutlass hacking at his neck.
Kenyon wakes up nights, sweating and with a feeling of absolute failure and anger sickening him, but he doesn’t remember his dreams, or even the last moments of the battle, beyond that fox’s face.
He spent half a season healing, then one day he was up and gone from the castle, along with a small loyal squad of his otters. He was not much comfort to Mona in those days, a fact he regrets. He went hunting for Danju, attacking any and every vermin band he came across. Each time he would come home, Mona would look towards him with hope, then crumple a little when she discovered he still hadn’t found their son.
He’d be gone, the next day or the next week, always coming back empty pawed. A couple years passed this way, during which he tangled with a wildcat slaver. Kenyon came out the victor, though it was not without price. Eventually he took longer and longer between voyages, until finally he seemed to give up.
He stayed on the Isle, providing a comforting shoulder for his mate. They finally mourned together, and if not moved on, continued on with life, still hoping Danju is alive somewhere.
