Kington had been traveling for half the morning and finally made it into Mossflower woods. He was tired and he could hear his stomach rumbling. He perked up his ears and tried to pick out any strange sounds, but all he could hear were the different strains of bird songs. He felt a chill breeze on his back and knew that fall would soon be upon the land. Kington was glad to be out the north lands which were in a perpetual winter.
He decided to shimmy up a large oak tree and doze for a little bit. He selected a wide branch almost twice as wide as he. He wrapped his frayed traveling cloak about himself and closed one eye. It never hurt to be to careful.

Bryce Stoneclaw narrowed his eyes.
His large vermin horde had marched for leagues upon end to get to this part of Mossflower country, where the autumn was setting in and Redwall was close by. Of course, he wanted nothing to do with the red stone abbey, but if need became he'd steal some food from it during the winter. Now his strong green eyes were fixed upon a squirrel resting in the v-shaped branch of a tree. Bryce was hiding; he could see the sturdily built squirrel had one eye open.
The tall cream brown rat turned to his two ferret captains, Dart and Claw, who were standing either side of his fox seer, Magus. Quickly, Bryce spoke his plan to the three in a whisper so the squirrel couldn't hear him. "Dart and Claw, make sure those idiot hordebeasts don't talk. Magus, if I get in trouble, as unlikely as that is, call Ryhn, that stoat, to come and help."
"Good plan, captain." Dart said shortly, with Claw nodding in assent. Magus moved to crouch behind a tree and motioned for Ryhn to join him. The dust gray and orange stoat squatted beside Magus to watch the battle. With a huge leap, the rat jumped out of the treeline and faced the squirrel with a confident smirk.
"'Tis dangerous for a beast to be out by himself in Mossflower, squirrel." Bryce said with a harsh chuckle.

Kington smiled at the rat's comment. He had heard a few beasts coming upon him, but he wasn't overly concerned. He scratched himself and sat up. " Only for those who mean ill, rat. Now why would you want to disturb a beast's rest when you could have climbed up here and stabbed me in my sleep?"
Kington's paw strayed to his short sword: Rat cleaver. He believed that shortly it would live up to his name. He stood up and leaned lightly against the tree.

Unseen by the squirrel, Bryce had winked at Magus, who silently crept over to Dart and Claw and whispered something to them. The army, one at a time, moved quietly to make a circle around the tree, about thirty beasts thick; there would, hopefully, be no escape for the squirrel, who was smiling lazily at the rat warlord now.
Only for those who mean ill, rat. Now why would you want to disturb a beast's rest when you could have climbed up here and stabbed me in my sleep?
Bryce yawned as though bored and twirled his saber. "You must understand, squirrel, that my creatures have you surrounded." He stopped and flicked his tail; Magus motioned to the few squirrels that were in Bryce's army to climb the trees around the area and prevent the other squirrel from escape. "There's no chance to escape, squirrel. Now, come down and fight me before I have my squirrels carry you down from that tree. An even one on one fight."
Bryce saw the squirrel's paw go to its sword, and Bryce lifted the blade with a confident snarl.

" I have no quarrel with you, unless you mean to harm the peacefull beasts that live in these woods." Kington never went looking for a fight unless it was unavoidable. He knew he was outnumbered and remebered his dad'd old adage: Why fight a hundred beasts and die when you could escape and live to kill the one.
King's eyes began scanning the trees and true to his word this rat had squirrels in his army. They had climbed up several trees, but Kington knew he was better than these squirrels and they might be able to learn it also; at the tip of Kington's sword.

Bryce's tone had been confident, and his squirrels were well trained in fighting and climbing; he waited for the other squirrel's reply, which came instantainiously; I have no quarrel with you, unless you mean to harm the peacefull beasts that live in these woods.
Bryce put on a confident smirk. "Then you do have a quarrel with me." After a few seconds, the rat realized the squirrel wasn't going to come down; he motioned with his tail and his squirrels moved forward until they were in a tight circle around Kingston. With a vicious snarl, the rat leapt up to the first tree branch, then the second, balancing easily; his blade prepared in his paw.
He stuck his dagger into the bark in case he had to grab it to stay above the ground, then tried a number of various sword cuts and thrusts at the squirrel, hoping one or two would break through the squirrel's defense.

This was the moment Kington had been waiting for. The trees were his turf and this rat's overconfidence may be his downfall. He parried each slice and thrust. He had to admit though that this rat was skilled with a blade... at least more skilled than most of the scum he had to fight. Kington had to do some swift thinking. He jumped to a higher branch then jumped over the rat plunging downward with his sword.
