Name: Colour Sergeant Saxifrage Dillworthy-Bigbones Gender: Male Age: 35 Species: Mountain Hare Occupation: Colour Sergeant of the Long Patrol
Physical Appearance: A big, longlimbed, battle-scarred brute of a hare, Saxifrage towers head and shoulders over most of his peers and is more than solidly built to boot, with even his claws seeming a bit thicker than normal. Dark gray from eartip to footpaws with lighter gray rings about his eyes to match his throat, chest, and muzzle, he is a muscular hare built for strength more than speed; confident and carefree in demeanor, he possesses a boisterous cheer that belies his intimidating size and is rarely without a smile. His eyes, too, are gray and most often creased with laughter; his whiskers, like his fur, are somewhat scruffy, adding to his overall rough look. Scars from both boxing and bladework cover his forearms, and can be seen here and there on the rest of his body, and his ears are well-notched with the deepest cut perhaps halfway up the left. When out of uniform - which is often - Sax wears a belted plaid of black, yellow, and blue on a green backing, and a sporran on his dirk belt. He is armed with a greatsword and highland dirk, though the dirk is mainly for show and he is far more accomplished with sword or fist. Sax's only adornment is a silver Bigbones emblem - a hare's head over crossed broadswords, with 'Bigbones' in highland script - that he uses to secure the loose cloak part of his belted plaid. Overall he is a somewhat rough-looking but cheerful and open buck, easily approached and willing to approach in turn.
Possessions: Greatsword - A huge two-handed sword, sheathed across his back.
Highland Dirk - A gift from his father when he left home, this wooden-hilted dagger is made for both beauty and function.
Sporran - Usually holds a snack for him, or for subordinates if they're skilled with Pleading Eyes.
Family Crest - His only adornment, and a point of pride. Worn in and out of uniform.
Personality: Boisterous, bottomless, and often irreverent - in other words, a hare's hare. Though dutiful, Saxifrage goes about his tasks with a devil-may-care attitude, and sometimes fails to quite realize when he's taken teasing too far. Stubborn and dedicated, he strives to fulfill all orders to the very letter; nevertheless, he can be a torment to higher ranking officers due to his willingness to aid recruits in games and pranks. Softhearted beneath the craggy exterior, he is a willing teacher and listening board for younger hares, of whom he is very protective - and he cannot be trusted to mete out discipline, as for all his toughness he will become upset if the called-out youngster does, and will absolutely go to pieces if tears are involved. He has also inherited the legendary (awful) singing voice of his ancestress - as well as her complete oblivious to how bad it really is - and raucous on-the-fly ballads are the terror of those he chooses to regale. Playful, loyal, and not too proud to take orders, Sax makes a good lower officer and will give those he respects and cares about his all - and respect, alas, is a good way to get the attention of his more prankish side.
Strengths: Physical Strength: As his size and choice of weapon suggests, he is a hare of enormous physical strength.
Swordbeast: Extremely competent with his greatsword, though one suspects he wouldn't know what to make of a smaller weapon.
Boxing/Grappling: A skilled boxer and better wrestler, he is just as happy to use this as his sword.
Buoyant Spirit: Little keeps this hare down for long.
Weaknesses: Soft Center: Don't expect him to discipline cadets or junior officers. He can't - even if the scolding doesn't bother him, he's usually too busy laughing at whatever they've done to be taken seriously.
Dreadful Musician: He doesn't really abuse the art of singing; it'd be more fair to say he drags it into an alley and pummels it within an inch of its life. Sadly for all involved, he is perfectly, blissfully oblivious.
Lack of Agility: He is quite capable of moving fast - but has a difficult time making on-the-dime turns or stopping, leading to him occasionally running full into walls or unfortunate passersby.
Doesn't Know When To Quit: He doesn't always realize when he's carried a joke too far, and always feels awful when he does figure it out.
Heat Sensitive: 'Southern' summers are a torment for this north-bred giant; hot weather tires him more quickly and can cut into his good humor if he doesn't have a way to cool himself.
History: The descendant of Dorothea Duckfontain Dillworthy and Bucko Bigbones, Sax was born in the high mountains to the leaders of the 'Northern Branch'. This particular settlement of mountain hares had long ago become isolated, to the point that they had entirely forgotten what they were supposed to be the Northern Branch of; as he came of age Sax became curious about this point. Making matters more urgent was the half-dream feeling that he was meant to follow a badger. Saxifrage, having never even seen a badger to this point, became more intently focused on the idea. Finally, at age twenty, he left with the blessings of his clan and family to find his answers and his badger; while sad to see one of their sons go, the hares of the clan fully understood that a young buck sometimes simply has to follow where the wind takes him.
Accompanied by his kite friend Conall MacTalon, Sax journeyed south. For long seasons, their journey was aimless - slowed in the summer by Sax's distaste for southern heat, and occasionally slowed by skirmishes with vermin or stints on farms to aid goodbeasts in exchange for food and perhaps news of a badger - such creatures were hard to miss, after all. In Noonvale, he did run across a badger, and it was here that Saxifrage learned of the badger mountain not so very far south; heartened by this news, he set off in late autumn, when cooler weather allowed longer marches, with Conall flying ahead to scout and bring news back to the hare. With Conall's help, Saxifrage soon made contact with the Long Patrol; the Patrol leader, on hearing Sax's story, confirmed that the mountain hare might find his answer at Salamandastron. Heartened, Sax accompanied the group to the badger mountain, where he encounted a Long Patroller called Briannoch Duckfontain.
Sax and Briannoch quickly realized they were distant cousins - she was a descendant of a Bigbones hare who left to serve in the main branch countless generations back. Better still, there was a badger at last - and in the mountain's history Saxifrage learned of his esteemed ancestors. Satisfied, Sax made the decision to stay with his southern brethren while Conall flew back to the highlands to serve as a connection between the two groups.
After many seasons of fighting Sax has achieved the rank of colour sergeant, a position he takes great pride in, and that is well suited to his stalwart protective nature. Now a permanent resident of the mountain, he looks forward to Conall's return with news and reports each autumn while delighting in the duties and company of the Long Patrol.
Relationships: Conall MacTalon: A friend from childhood, this kite is Saxifrage's main link to his family. Bearberry Dillworthy-Bigbones: His elder sister by five years, Bearberry is now the clan leader back home. Briannoch Bigbones-Duckfontain: His 'little' cousin - a big haremaid seven years his junior - was the first inkling Sax had of his family history, and the apple of his eye.
