Name: Dandelion ‘Dandy’ Darrel
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Species: Mouse
Occupation: Wandering Fighter/ Lost Soul
Physical Appearance:
The most prominent feature Dandelion has is her bright yellow fur, which makes her easy to spot among other mice and is also her namesake. Surprisingly for a mouse of her small stature she is quite strong, which is a result of years of defending her home and her loved ones and is in top physical form. ‘Dandy’ has somewhat large, round ears, but a small pink nose. With honey brown eyes, ‘Dandy’ hardly seemed like a fighter.
However, with the passing of her parents, the friendly and inviting look about her vanished and was replaced with dourness. As a result, her small tail follows limply behind her, matching the slow and careful step in her hind-paws. Her whiskers and ears have also begun to droop as well, but in her eyes remains a glow of determination.
Clothing:
Donning a light green robe, Dandelion does her best to remain inconspicuous and travel light. Around the waist is an old, frayed chord to keep the robe taught. Around the chord, several pouches are tied filled with various herbs in case of any medical emergency. To keep the hood of the robe, a small, brown choker is tied around the neck. Preferring to travel light, she also carries a satchel she once used to carry crops back and forth from the house, which Dandelion now uses for a travel bag.
Possessions:
A halberd, “Blitz” passed down in her family for generations. Although normally passed down to a son, as she was an only child she received it. In combat, the spear makes up for Dandelion’s short reach and because of its small ax-blade and pointed tip, the halberd is very versatile in combat. Reinforced with rings along the shaft, it can also effectively block other weapons. However, this comes at a cost of making the weapon even heavier. Despite ‘Dandy’s’ strength, if parried, she will have a tough time recovering; and if swung, it is slower than a blade. When travelling, the halberd makes an excellent walking stick.
On her personage at all times is a small, cloth mouse doll. Given to Dandelion by her mother at a very young age because her daughter was rather lonely, she has loved it ever since. The doll also serves as a memento of her mother and would not dare to ever let it out of her sight.
Personality:
On the outside, Dandelion is a very cold looking individual. As the years passed, the vibrant glow about her turned to a single ray of what once was. Largely silent and somewhat gloomy she does not give off a very friendly vibe.
However, on the inside, remains a strong will that once put to a goal is unshakable. With the spirit of the warrior she will do whatever she can to reach her goal, even at the cost of her own life. Yet alongside this warrior spirit is a more tender, caring soul that despite years of harsh living in the North, still remains.
Strengths:
Physical Strength: After years of working hard to support and defend her family, Dandelion has achieved a great level of physical fitness.
Mental Acuity: A strong body is not only what is needed to survive the rough nature of the North. Mental strength is also required. If a mind cannot handle the seemingly endless toil, it breaks. In order to survive, Dandelion had to remain astute.
Weaknesses:
Prejudice towards vermin: After years of being attacked by vermin who would kill her at any chance they had, Dandelion grew to distrust and despise any creature within the vermin variety.
Low self-worth: After the death of her parents, who she protected and who she would be willing to lay down her life for, she lost sight of who she was and as a result sees little value in her life.
Poor social skills: Years of solitary living with only her family, has left Dandelion without many proper social skills. Though she knows of etiquette she is not familiar with regular contact. As a result she may seem very cold at first despite, her otherwise very caring nature.
Separation Anxiety: The cloth mouse doll given to her by Tulip is never out of Dandelion’s sight. If lost she will begin to panic and regress to a more juvenile way of dealing with the anxiety.
History:
The daughter of mice desperate to escape the reach of the hordebeasts that roamed Mossflower, Dandelion was a gift to her parents, Malcolm and Tulip. The best home they had found was there in the North. Far from idyllic, but peaceful enough to tolerate, Dandelion’s parents had finally settled down. The pair had given birth to a son, but he had not made it past infancy. After a year of solitude, the pair had decided to try again.
Born on a fine spring morning, she was named Dandelion because her light yellow fur had a habit of standing out around her head giving her a puffy appearance like that of a dandelion. Living as hermits in the North, Dandelion’s family had no neighbors except for the occasional vermin band, but her father, a skilled warrior, could easily fend them off. Having severed all contact with those they knew in Mossflower to avoid drawing too much attention to themselves, Dandelion grew up rather lonely. In order to help her daughter cope, Tulip made her a cloth doll, which she adored and has never parted with to this day.
At the age of five, knowing he would not always be there to protect the family, Malcolm began to teach her all he knew of fighting and gave her a quarterstaff to use until she was old enough to use the family’s halberd. At the age of ten, after diligently training for five years, she was finally able to help her father keep their home and food crop safe. However, years of hard work in their field had taken its toll on Tulip who soon grew gravely ill.
For the next three years, Tulip was largely bed ridden, forcing Dandelion to have to take up many of her mother’s tasks. However, she took them on with pride and quickly learned how to balance her own chores with her mother’s. She soon also quickly took on a very caring role towards Tulip, bringing her meals to her room and helping her with anything she needed. Unfortunately, after several years of battling the disease, and despite Dandelion’s best efforts, her mother passed away.
This dealt a very strong blow on both Dandelion and Malcolm. For years the two did their best to cope, but the quiet and labor intensive life they lived was growing weary on both of them. Having heard tales of a red, sandstone abbey to the South in a wood known as Mossflower, Dandelion began to yearn for a visit to the abbey. Malcolm agreed, having finally come to terms with his wife's death, but decided that they would leave when she was just a little older.
When Dandelion had reached the age of sixteen, a vermin band attempted to steal their land. They soon met the wrath of two fearless mice warriors. However, as the two fought, Malcolm was horribly wounded in the back by a stray arrow. Enraged, Dandelion was able to fight back the vermin that remained. Returning to her father she carried him to their house where she nursed him back to health. Unfortunately, the arrow had left him paralyzed and now it was solely up to her to take care of everything. Seeing as Dandelion’s father could no longer protect their home, he passed down the halberd to her.
Two years later, after defending her home admirably and doing her best to serve her father, Malcolm died. The realization that she was now an orphan, dealt a great blow to her as they had been the only creatures she had spoken with. However, now eighteen, Dandelion decided the time had come to finally begin her search for Redwall and with the death of her parents; Dandelion no longer had any reason to stay. Taking some supplies, herbs, and her mouse doll, Dandelion turned her back on her life in the North.
Relationships:
Malcolm Darrel: Born in Mossflower wood, Malcolm lived quietly with his family. However, when he was eighteen, vermin raiders destroyed his home and killed his parents. Vowing to never fall victim to vermin again, Malcolm claimed the halberd, his birthright, and moved North to escape the haunting memory of his parent’s death. Along the way, Malcolm met Tulip who was trying to escape as well. After a rushed wedding the two continued North where they spent a year trying to find a new home.
Though they gave birth to a son during this time, the poor mouse babe was unable to survive infancy. Following a year of solitude, the two mice decided to try again. When Dandelion was born, the pain and loss of their first child was focused into joy and hope for her. Malcolm somewhat doted on his daughter and taught her how to defend herself right away. However, after Tulip died, Malcolm grew somewhat despondent, though he remained strong for his daughter. In his final years, seeing his daughter so grown up and running the household, he could not have been prouder. He died grateful to see that Dandelion had become a strong, independent mouse.
Tulip Darrel: Born in Mossflower, Tulip had lived a relatively peaceful lifestyle until she had turned seventeen. Shortly after her birthday Tulip’s home was destroyed and her family was killed. Tulip survived because she had not been at home at the time. Panicking, she fled into the forest. After a day or so of desperately trying to get as far away as possible from her ravaged home, Tulip met Malcolm, who had survived a similar ordeal. Together the two walked on and eventually promised themselves to each other.
After the death of her first-born son, Tulip was devastated. It took her a year to finish mourning. Though reluctant, after facing a quiet year in the North, Tulip finally felt it was time to try again. Dandelion’s birth was a cause for jubilation, but Tulip’s joy was tinged with doubt. For months she worried of her newborn daughter meeting the same fate as her son. When Malcolm began training Dandelion she realized that her daughter would be growing up in a very harsh world and fervently hoped that her daughter could one day escape from the cruel North. When her daughter was finally old enough to help defend their land alongside Malcolm, fraught with worry and pushed to her limit with the physically demanding labor required of living in the North, she grew very ill.
Tulip could not have felt worse about the care Dandelion gave to her as she lay bedridden. Yet at the same time she was so proud of how strong Dandelion was. Before she passed, Tulip told her daughter that she had been her brightest ray of hope and hoped she would never burn out.
Other: As soon as Dandelion reaches Redwall, she’ll be set for joining the Moss Guard.
