"The idea . . ." Cordin muttered, trying to keep his grip on the ottermaid. "I got no bloody problem with peace, Miss. I figured bringin' the little ball o' fire to ye would be a better choice than leavin' 'er t'die out on the bolly sands, wot?" His smile dropped off the corporal's face for a moment as Black walked up.
Roseleaf was seriously considering at this point shoving all three (including Black) out into the hallway and shutting her doors firmly. Not two months ago her time, while busy, had been calm. Everything fell into place. She didn’t have badgerlords stepping on ferrets and carting them into the infirmary in ‘secret’ wood carts. She didn’t have a timid mouse maid who refused to get herself to supply and get herself a proper fitting uniform. She didn’t have Black hovering in the corner and scaring the babes, because it was summer and he much preferred his grisly woodland home. Why he didn’t just accept a decommissioning and stay out there all year, she had given up wondering.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have that luxury. She narrowed her eyes and prepared what would be a properly scathing speech without language that would scald the ears of Corporal Dorchestor.
"TAM! You're alive!"
Tam delivered a sharply placed elbow and threw herself at her cousin, a huge grin, relief and joy breaking out on her face. He was alive! The clenched, butterfly feeling in her stomach, guilt and anger and doubt, dissolved as she clutched him in a hard return hug. Her words rushed and overlapped with his.
“Damon, I thought you were dead, I thought I’d left you to die, I was so afraid, but you’re alive!” "What happened after we got separated? Where ya been all this time, Tam? Hell's Teeth, I thought you were gone forever."
"Ahem." Roseleaf's face was stern, her voice dry. "If you two are done?"
