Name: Tampa "Tam" Tiderunner
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Species: Sea otter
Occupation: N/A
Physical Appearance:
Currently:
Tam is tall and thin, her frame filling out from the slat-sided starveling she had been for so many years. She eats as each meal may be her last, and has put on quite the bit of weight, though it hardly shows at all. Her fur is clean and even coming into the proper thickness for an otter. It shines mahogany for the first time in years.
Prominent in her appearance are her eyes. Amber, they seem large in her emancipated face and are fierce with hatred and anger. She always seems to carry the anger with her. It is apparent in her tense movements and sometimes irrational actions.
Her paws are calloused and her body is scarred. There is a story to be told here, but she's not talking.
Possessions:
Tampa has only two possessions, the rags on her back and a pendant she wears around her neck. The chain was broken years ago, the pendant is now strung on a rough string. The pendant is a spiral-shaped obsidian stone.
Personality:
Tampa is a brash and often irrational-seeming individual. She is by no means unintelligent, but sometimes her actions can belie that fact. Once (sort of) a calm and rational individual, Tam is now ruled by an overriding anger and hatred-- even fear. Some people react to their problems by running or talking. Tam reacts by getting violent.
An intensive drive to destroy her enemies and a strong will to live eventually saw her successful escape from her captors. Unfortunately for them, she's not done with them yet. Revenge is a fire in her heart, and it drives her actions. She's not interesting in moralities, or niceness. She doesn't care for the rules of war or for common decency. Tam is out for blood.
This is not to say Tam spends her days fuming and raging. She can pass the appearance of a normal, calm individual, though she holds a strong prejudice against vermin of any stripe. She can be cheerily sarcastic, and will even find fun in frustrating others attempts for peace.
It is hard to gain Tampa’s trust, but equally hard to lose it once you’ve gained it. She has a desperate need to believe in the few she does trust, and fights hard any suggestion that her trust is misplaced. She has known little kindness in her life, and doesn’t understand it. Slavery and cruelty is all she’s ever known.
Strengths:
Determination- She certainly hasn't anything else going for her. Driven by hate, maybe, but she's determined and driven to accomplish her goal: free her home from under the paw of Obisidius Bane.
Loyalty- It doesn't seem so at first glance, but Tampa has her loyalties: to the Northlands, to her family. Hard to gain, loyalty is harder to lose. She'll do anything for those she cares for.
Compassion- Having led a hard life, Tampa doesn't seem to have any sympathy for others. However, she isn't all hard edges and will occasionally show a softer corner of herself.
"Strength"- Hard work and survival have given her a strength belied by her physical state. Her muscles are ropy and lay over sharp bones, but she's strong enough to have survived this long.
Weaknesses:
Trust- Trust is a two-edged sword, and while Tampa has a hard time trusting anyone, once you have it she will believe anything. Her relationship with her cousin, for example, has been used to manipulate her before. No one knows what would happen if she were to realize someone she trusts in wasn't worth it.
Anger- Tampa doesn't know how to react-- and whether she's unsure, angry or afraid, she gets violent. She does not suffer from bloodwrath, but she does often become a victim of tunnel-vision and a focus that is dangerously hard to shake.
Malnourished- A lack of food has made her physically weak, and it would take more than a couple of meals to undo years of starvation.
History:
If there was a happy time in Tampa's life, she doesn't remember it. As with can often happen with young children, she has forgotten her early years. One crystal clear memory she does have is of clinging to her older cousin while the otter tribes were rounded up. Just two terrified children, lost in the chaos.
[This is not in Tampa's Memories:
Tampa's parents, Tagyr and Rosewater, were both warriors of her clan. They loved their daughter and were planning on sending her away with Tagyr's younger brother, Treble. Tagyr and Rosewater were escorting them south out of the Northlands territory when they ran into a patrol.
The family was separated, Tampa was captured and Tagyr and Rosewater were killed. Treble barely survived the fight, and assumed his little niece was dead as well when he found his brother and sister-in-laws bodies.
The patrol was out to round up as many otters as they could find, and somehow in this chaos Tam found her cousin Damon.]
Somehow they survived, and Tampa grew up with the particular, unspoken rules of slavery. Food is not to be messed with. Every beast for itself. Among others, these shaped the way her personality grew. She was angry, and when she got angry she became violent. There wasn't any middle ground for her, no lying in wait until a later time. With Damon swearing he would look out for her, she dragged him into her fair share of fights and disagreements.
Recently, Tampa has managed to escape from the Northlands along with her cousin, but they became separated. She has ended up at Redwall, a peaceful abbey that just wishes her gone...
