Name: Tessa Rex Evelyn Boulder (Nicknames: Tess, Tessa Rex, Wrecks Everything)
Gender: Female
Age: 20
Species: Mole
Occupation: Redwaller/Digger/Archer
Physical Appearance:
Tessa's fur is the traditional deep coffee brown of moles. Her snout has a slight tint of a lighter, more chocolate brown on the end under her pink nose. She has lots of whiskers and tiny ears, hidden beneath her fur, typical of a mole. Her eyes are small and bright, almost icy blue, clearly visible against her dark fur. Her digging claws are large and wide, a nice dark tan color. She has one extra finger on her left claw, and, despite it being shorter than her other fingers, it works perfectly fine. Her hind feet are also large, with long claws, and the toes spread wide apart when she takes a step. She's a little short, even for a mole, but she's built thickly, with lots of muscle. Even her tail is thick for a mole, with dense fur, making it appear rather fluffy.
Clothing: Normally seen in a traditional green habit of Redwall, Tessa actually prefers to wear as little clothing as is decently possible. While digging, she will don a white sleeveless shirt with rather thin straps. (I say the shirt is white because that's the color it originally was. Now it's covered with dirt and mud, so it's not exactly white anymore.) And she will also wear short brown breeches, bandages around her hind paws, and her lucky ribbon. She ties an old bright pink ribbon around one bicep whenever she digs, and it can usually be seen around her arm even while not digging, since it's very dear to her. Both the white shirt and the breeches are ripped and tattered beyond repair, but still (somehow) wearable.
Possessions:
Tessa's greatest possession is her lucky ribbon, which she once wore as part of a beloved frilly pink dress when she was little. The dress was, sadly, destroyed, and the ribbon was the only salvageable piece, and Tessa wears it around one bicep at all times. (It once could fit around her middle.)
Tessa's other possessions include a map of tunnels running below Redwall that she and her father drew together, a bright amber pendant shaped like a heart held in swirling silver wires, and a small lantern for use in the tunnels. She has named her lantern Jo, after her late grandfather. It's a simple brass lantern with an overlarge handle, so Tess can pick it up comfortably. She rarely goes digging without her lantern.
She also owns a longbow and a quiver of blue arrows, because she found an old store of blue paint in an abandoned tunnel once, and, with nothing else to use it for, decided to paint her arrows with it.
Personality:
Tessa is one of the guys. Loud, fun-loving, and tough, she is often mistaken for a boy at first, since even her voice is deeper than most female moles'. No beast can say Tessa Rex Evelyn is feminine. Always willing to get down and dirty, Tess loves the soil. Even more than a regular mole loves to be in the dirt, Tess will literally cover herself in loam just to unwind after a long day.
Unlike other moles, Tess loves heights (even though she gets a little dizzy after too long) but she doesn't like water very much. Water means cleanliness, and cleanliness means no more dirt. This will not be tolerated by Tessa Rex Evelyn. She does get a little seasick when on a boat for more than twenty minutes or so. Nope, she's not a fan of water. Can't even swim.
Tess is quite proud of her girth, and is not afraid to test her strength against the other young males at the abbey. She's beaten down more than her fair share of opponents, but if she loses a fight, she's the best sport about it. Also a bit of a jokester, Tess will poke fun at you when given the chance. But she doesn't overdo it, unless you play along with her and you both get carried away.
Tess is actually quite clumsy. Though her eyesight is better than most moles', she doesn't always watch where she's going and bumps into things (or creatures) often. Now, 'bumps' is an understatement. She will crash, often at full force, toppling over whatever (or whoever) hapless thing happened to be crossing her path at the wrong time. This has resulted in many broken dishes, spilt drinks and food, shattered glass, and (but this has only happened once) broken bones. Tessa will not stop apologizing for the incident for days after it happened, until finally the other creature gets her to shut up by yelling, "I forgive you, Tessa! Stop saying you're sorry!" right into her face. These constant mishaps have given Rex Evelyn the nickname "Wrecks Everything," and Tessa absolutely hates that she's so clumsy to have deserved a name like that.
Despite her ineptitude of movement above ground, Wrecks Everything doesn't wreck anything beneath the earth besides the soil. Her tunneling technique is flawless, having spent years studying her father and the foremole to become a better digger. Because of her brawn, she is able to move a considerable amount of soil in very little time.
Tess also knows how to shoot a longbow. Since her eyesight is quite possibly the best out of all the current resident moles of Redwall, she decided to put it to good use. So she became an archer. She learned most everything she knows from a few squirrel friends, and a couple of otters from the Otter Crew. She's not half bad, either. She can hit a target well enough, and since she isn't afraid of heights, has learned to shoot a target on the ground from as high as the ramparts of the abbey. It's her personal goal to make a bull's eye on a target positioned in the gardens from one of the attic windows. She's off to a pretty good start.
Tess is certainly not all brawn and no brain. She's intelligent and quite knowledgeable in the ways of tunnel-making and in regards to her other hobbies. She passed abbey school somehow, right? However, she can be a little gullible at times, but, as mentioned before, she's a great sport. She's also quite levelheaded and practical, and a fiercely loyal friend.
Strengths:
A thorough yet fast digger, Tessa can build a decent-length working tunnel in less than half a day. She has great physical strength and stamina. She never holds a grudge, and she can always take a joke (except the Wrecks Everything name, that's a bit touchy). Also a decent archer, Tess has pretty accurate aim and good eyesight. Logical and intelligent, Tess can look at a situation from a non-emotional standpoint, enabling her to draw practical conclusions. Also, she's the best friend anybeast could hope for and not at all afraid of heights.
Weaknesses:
Tessa is extremely clumsy above ground, and tends to crash into things and others often. She doesn't forgive herself easily, and will continue to apologize for a mistake long after it's been made. She also gets rather touchy and short-tempered when somebeast calls her Wrecks Everything. Despite her great strength, she's actually not particularly fast, especially not above the soil. Though her eyesight is good, her hearing is not the best. She also can't stand being in the water for long or she'll start feeling sick. Besides archery and some basic paw-to-paw, she possesses few other fighting skills. And even though she's a good archer, her movements are slow because of her large digging claws.
History:
Tessa was born to Rex and Adrian Boulder, two moles on the foremole's crew at Redwall. While awaiting their first child's birth, the couple and Adrian's mother argued constantly about what to name the babe. Rex wanted a son with his own name. Adrian wanted a daughter named Evelyn. Dura, the grandmother, wanted a granddaughter named Tessa. When the babe was born a girl, Dura immediately declared her name to be Tessa, while Rex simultaneously shouted for the child's name to be Rex (he was not informed of the gender just yet), and Adrian (weakly) protested that her daughter's name be Evelyn.
One of the nursemaids standing nearby, tired of all the shouting, suggested that the child be given all the names. The three moles looked at each other and decided that was the only way they would be satisfied. Thus, Tessa Rex Evelyn Boulder was born.
Tess grew up as a happy little molemaid, loving the dirt as much as any other of her species. Her mother liked to dress her up for special occasions in a pretty pink dress that her grandmother Dura had made. However, Tessa's insatiable love of digging became the end of that frilly pink dress one evening after a big season banquet. All she had left of it was the ribbon that once went around her middle, and she wore it constantly. However, as she grew considerably wider, packing on muscle from constant digging, she found the precious ribbon could fit around her middle any longer, so she took to wearing it around one arm.
Tagging along with Foremole and his crew often as she got older, Tess learned all there was to know about the art of digging. She would like to become a member of the crew, but her father still thinks she's too young. But to teach her more about tunnels and such, and to have a little daddy-daughter bonding time Rex took Tessa on a thorough exploration of all the abandoned tunnels beneath Redwall, and they spent their time mapping out the old earthen tubes. She now carries that map with her whenever she goes exploring, and has found many interesting treasures in those old tunnels. Including her lantern, which she found still burning in a dead end. Thinking one of Foremole's crew had left it there, she asked around, but none of the moles claimed it, so she kept it. She named it Jo after the grandfather she never met (he died before she was born).
Dura had brought in a young hare to Redwall, and Tess became great friends with him. They had many adventures together, becoming close friends. Tess once tried to teach him how to dig, but the hare, now known as Rook, didn't take to it. Both young creatures were heartbroken when Dura passed on, and they honor her memory fondly.
As Tessa grew, she discovered her eyesight was better than most other moles', so she decided to put it to good use. Enlisting the help of a few of the Otter Crew and some squirrels, the molemaid learned archery, and she learned it pretty well. After a short excursion down into the abandoned tunnels below Redwall, she discovered some buckets of blue paint. To keep her own arrows separate from those of other archers, she colored them with the old paint. She likes to reuse them.
Growing up in an abbey with lots of other creatures means that one has to watch where one is going, out of courtesy and common sense. However, Tessa doesn't always do this, and, considering her wide girth, she really should think about doing it more often. Her first "Wrecks Everything" crash took place when she was 12, when she was walking down the stairs, and the Grounds Keeper was walking up them, carrying a potted fern. Tessa was talking to Rook, who walked behind her. The mole had her head turned, and her mute hare friend couldn't warn her in time of the Grounds Keeper just below her. The Keeper, a mouse of much thinner stature than the bulky mole, didn't stand a chance when Tessa tripped on her habit and barreled right into him. The plant pot shattered, but fortunately none of the Keeper's bones did. Tess was so embarrassed and sorry that she didn't stop apologizing for a week.
Her second crash, the one that really got her the awful nickname, occurred when she was 14, and had gained even more muscle and brawn. She broke a squirrel's collarbone when trying to help him reach a high shelf. He was standing on her shoulders, and she didn't notice the empty bowl on the floor right in front of her. She slipped and fell backwards, and somehow the squirrel ended up beneath her. His collarbone snapped and he was in a cast for quite awhile. Tess continued to say she was sorry for months after the incident. The squirrel was the one who actually came up with the nickname "Wrecks Everything." Tess stopped apologizing to him after he started calling her that.
Now, at the age of 20, Tess is not much more coordinated than at age 12 or 14, but she is a (slightly) better sport about the nickname. She spends her time digging and goofing off with her friends, oh, and doing her chores. She also likes to practice archery, and she can most often be found outdoors. That's where all the good dirt is, after all. She received her amber pendant from her mother as a present on her nineteenth birthday.

Other:
Tess has never had much problem with her extra claw, nor has it ever really gotten in her way.
She has stepped on many a foot with those big hind paws of hers.
Her eyes have been the topic of many conversations among the young male moles. Ice-blue isn't a common eye color for moles.
