It's good to meet everybody.
If these characters don't fit regulations, just tell me, I'll fix them up.
Name: Maia
Gender: Female
Age: 19 years
Species: Squirrel
Occupation: Wanderer
Physical Appearance: A typical pretty squirrelmaid, of average height and willowy, slender build. She wears makeup when she can find it, and gives the impression of a girly-girl.
She wears a light pink dress with a belt, bronze earrings, jade bracelet, and a pearl necklace. She walks upright, treading softly, and has a high, birdlike voice.
She has dark red-brown fur, and her long-eyelashed brown eyes are soft and gentle... when she's sane.
Possessions: Aside from the aforementioned jewelry, she carries a large double-bladed axe and has several daggers tucked into her belt.
Personality: On the surface, she's a sweet, gentle, generic, outgoing squirrelmaid. She appears to be quite understanding, helpful, kind, and naive...but below the surface...
She's actually a homicidal wreck. Her upbringing has resulted in, including a deep hatred of vermin, severe mental instability, and anyone who harms her darling Elito is in for a whole lot of pain. She rarely minds killing innocent beasts, and if they're coming between her and her beloved, out comes the axe. She will do anything, ANYTHING for him, and always has his best interests at heart... whether he thinks so or not.
Strengths: She's quite a dab hand with the axe, and has no problem sacrificing innocents to get the job at hand done... whether that counts as a strength or not.
She's also very clever, something Elito is only halfway aware of, and left to her own devices is able to come up with complicated plans on how to free him from the latest vermin holding him captive; or bumping off the nearest (imagined or not) rival for his affection.
Weaknesses: The only thing she cares about in the world is Elito and making sure he knows nothing about her "crazy" side. All others can go to Hellgates. Understandably, this alienates a lot of others, and sometimes this can become a problem when she's forced to seek their help.
And the beasts who do know her true colors just pass her off as an insane maniac, due to her unwillingness to talk about her past and reveal how she became what she was. She even refuses to speak to Elito about it.
However, she can be easily manipulated because of her feelings for him. Elito is a very weak spot with her, and perceptive beasts can use him to get to her very easily. And to some degree, if someone manipulates Elito into telling her to do something, that's a quick way to get her to do absolutely anything.
History: She was raised as a slave under a rat king, and from a young age was made to do heavy, backbreaking work under the cruel whip of the overseer. When she was five she witnessed her father being beaten to death for a mistake he made, and when she was eight she held her mother as she died of overwork.
Then it was just her and her big brother. Her brother had always loved her and protected her, defending her from the whip as much as he could, shouldering some of her work, and always giving her part of his food. But he grew more weak as the additional burden of his sister sapped his life, until he feared he was going to be put to death when he could no longer work. He worried and fretted about his sister and what she was going to do when he died, and came to a solution.
When one of the overseers wasn't looking, he stole a small knife, and at night, when his sister was sleeping, tried to murder her.
She woke up and fought him off, and, tears in her eyes, asked him why he was doing this. His answer was that if she was dead, she wouldn't have to work anymore and no would hurt her, she would be at peace. Then he stabbed himself, as he thought she would be happier that her brother who had tried to kill her was gone.
And that night, as she knelt in her brother's blood, cradling his head, telling him she loved him and begging him to come back, something inside her snapped.
A little later she took the knife, picked the lock on the cell, and fled into the night.
She ran for days, barely stopping, until she collapsed from exhaustion. There she was taken in by a kindly squirrel family and nursed back to health, where she fell deeply in love with the son of the family, a lad her age called Elito.
Believing he wouldn't leave her if he didn't have anything else to love, she murdered his family when he was gone one day and said that vermin did it. Then they struck out on their own.
Relationships: The only being that matters even a little to her, now, is Elito. She cares absolutely nothing for all others.
Other: But don't be fooled. She does carry some affection for her dead brother and has... a quite complicated relationship with him. On one hand, she hates him for trying to kill her, on the other, she loves him dearly for protecting her and loving her. In fact, one of the reasons she cares for Elito is because he reminds her of him, and she sees him as a sort of "replacement".
Maia is not good or evil, but since Elito sees himself as "good", when he's around that's usually how she'll act.
Name: Elito Wintertree
Gender: Male
Age: 19 years
Species: Squirrel
Occupation: Wanderer. He likes to think of himself as a champion for the downtrodden, but more often than usual just stumbles in and messes everything up.
Physical Appearance: A handsome, tall lad, wearing a green waistcoat and gold earring in one ear. Has dark-rimmed purple eyes, which Maia often describes as "amethyst". He walks fast and lightly, back upright and chest thrown out.
His fur is slightly lighter than most squirrels, giving it a gold sheen in sunlight. It's also soft as a rabbit's, making it useful for cold nights.
Possessions: A double-pronged sword.
Personality: Elito likes to see himself as shining knight in armor, further encouraged by the numerous times Maia tells him he is exactly that. He tries to come off as kind and honorable, but is occasionally unsuccessful and instead gives the impression of a cold, detached individual. He thinks that if he rushes in, he'll always save the day, and rather naively thinks that good will always defeat evil... somehow.
He's nervous around big, black birds in general due to an incident in his childhood, and he hates vermin with a passion, as he thinks they are responsible for the death of his parents.
Strengths: As mentioned, he wants to protect the weak and save the day, and really tries. He wants to be nice to others too, and has a heart of gold. He also genuinely cares about Maia, seeing her as all he has left after his family was killed, and is unaware that she was the cause of their death.
Weaknesses: Hoo boy. He has a rather high self-esteem, thinking himself as the ideal hero, not helped by the praise and affection that Maia showers him with. More often than not, he'll see a goodbeast being attacked by vermin and will try to rush in and save the day... only to be captured instead, or only saved by the timely intervention of Maia. If he stumbles across vermin, he'll just jump in and try to kill all that he sees. Quite frankly, he is a deluded "hero" who's just an annoyance. The most that can be said is that he's more to be pitied than anything else.
He is also, despite years of training, only a mediocre swordsbeast. Fighting just isn't for him, not that he'll listen.
And no matter how many time he tries to be nice to people, having been raised in absolute seclusion, he has no idea how to act.
In addition, he is mostly oblivious to Maia's true colors, although he sometimes suspects that something isn't quite right.
History: He was raised in Mossflower by his parents; and as his father taught him all he knew about swordfighting, he dreamed of going to Redwall and becoming a warrior; even though he wasn't that great at it, his father loved him too much to tell him otherwise.
Due to this removed-from-the-world environment, he became completely unable to communicate with anyone outside of his family, having no idea what to do or how to deal with them.
His mother often read him stories about heroes in distant lands, and from this the seed of desire to become one was born.
Because he lived in the middle of a tangled patch of forest, vermin rarely bothered to beat their way through it, and very few knew about the squirrel family's existence. However, crows nested in the thick underbrush, and they sometimes attacked the squirrel family. One of Elito's first memories was clinging to his mother in terror as a crow attacked them, and his father beating it off with a sword. Ever since, he's been edgy around them.
One day, his father brought back a unconscious, pretty squirrelmaid and he sat by her bedside as he recovered.
As she grew better, she attached herself to him and called him "her knight", which always him blush. As they grew closer, though, he failed to notice the look in her eyes when she gazed at his parents, even though they treated her as if she was their own daughter.
And one day, when he went off alone to practice swordfighting, he came back and found them dead, stabbed to death. Maia was in the corner, weeping and telling him that vermin had come and and killed them, and from that day on his personality froze up and he became more cold to the world. He took Maia and they walked into Mossflower, and he searches for the vermin who killed his parents, unaware that their killer is already walking beside him.
Relationships: He likes to think of Maia as his best friend and may have a slight crush on her.
He wants to help people; it's fairly easy to see that. He cares for goodbeasts.
Other: This is pretty much all there is to him.
Sometimes, though... he thinks.
Are vermin really that evil? What about ones that beg? Do they have families?
And what about that one who didn't fight back? Who kneeled and said that he was good, that he'd never hurt anyone in his life, and never would?
And what about he himself, Elito Wintertree, protector of the weak? What was he, after he slaughtered a defenseless foe?
And he turns around, presses his face against his pillow, and tries to shut out those thoughts.
If these characters don't fit regulations, just tell me, I'll fix them up.
