Name: Iven
Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Species: Hedgehog
Occupation: Scholar
Physical Appearance:
Like all other hedgehogs, Iven has long narrow spines extending in downward curves in plentiful bunches from the top of his head, the back of his neck, his backside, and somewhat along his sides. His spikes are of varied shades of brown that mesh beautifully together while his fur coats nearly everything else on him in grayish-white. The color of the hairs that cover his face and paws, however, is a dark solid brown.
Typical of any hedgehog, he has short round ears at the sides of his head near his quills. His brown eyes nearly match the abysmally shaded fur surrounding them. His snout is exceptionally elongated and angular, but it is by no means considered an abnormality among his own kind. In fact, the size and shape of his muzzle gifts him with his keen sense of smell.
For clothing, he wears a large green habit, the standard for many members of Redwall’s order. It is able to encompass even his spines, but their sharp edges have left it full of holes. Every once in awhile, he has it stitched whenever he feels his habit is about to fall apart. There are as many small green patches keeping the worn fabric together as there are recent tears.
Possessions
The clothes on his back and an assortment of things such as scrolls, writing quills, ink, etcetera that he normally keeps in his room/study.
Personality:
Iven is a shamelessly deceitful character; he has more than enough skill to lie convincingly and cloak his dark intentions. As charismatic as he is, he knows exactly what to say and what actions to take to make almost anyone side with him. He is incredibly ambitious and will pursue a goal, an item, a piece of information, or whatever else it is he wants no matter how absurd or simple until he obtains it.
His methods are as meticulous and subtle as his patience is immeasurable. Despite how he may act or what he says, he cares only for himself and those whom he deems beneficial to or necessary for what he needs and desires. While he may never genuinely feel compassion for anyone, he seldom expresses his true feelings.
His wondrous intellect is considered inspirational and he is wise far beyond his seasons; he is more than well aware of this fact. He has been complimented for his good qualities on numerous occasions and even he is not immune to the altering effects of flattery. As a result, he has developed a high opinion of himself. He may very well end up in severe trouble if he fails to keep his ever expanding ego in check.
Strengths:
Deceiving him in any conceivable manner is a severe challenge for many, especially for those inexperienced at doing so. He has learned to translate the physical expressions and voice tones of others for the truth that they often try to hide from him. On the flipside of the same proverbial coin, he has expertise in the art of deception. He can express emotions without actually feeling them and make them believable. He has a disturbing amount of control over his own features and tone of voice that his body only ever reveals what he wishes to show.
He has a keen sense of smell that serves him well in multiple facets of life. A wonderful use for it is determining if an unknown plant is edible or not and if something such as food or water has been poisoned. He can also use his sense of smell to track down enemies or, more importantly, locate and assist allies and friends by their distinguishable bodily odors. Due to the sensitivity of his nose, detecting nearby beasts, regardless of the nature of their relationship with him or lack there of, comes naturally. Surprising him or catching him off guard is nigh impossible as a result.
Weaknesses:
He lacks raw physical strength. He can hardly lift a babe and carry it around and that is under the condition that the babe isn’t a badger or creature of equal or greater size. He tires easily if he ever travels too heavily and sometimes relies on others to carry and hold onto some of his possessions for him. He avoids wearing armor due to weight that comes with it; he finds wearing just one or two pieces uncomfortable and anymore than that to be burdensome. You don’t have to be a badger to subdue this hedgehog, you just have to be careful about his nose.
He is dismally untalented in combat in every imaginable respect. Regarding the basics of punching, kicking, etcetera, he simply cannot manage a proper technique, especially against armed and armored foes. Dismissing the fact that many weapons are too heavy for him to carry and wield, he has never trained with one. Even something as seemingly simple as a dagger poses a greater threat to the hedgehog in his inexperienced hands than it would to any other.
History:
Born in Redwall Abbey, Iven has received and taken advantage of the generous hospitality freely provided to him by the good natured beasts contained within. Ever since he learned to talk, he revealed he was exceptionally persuasive and convincing for one so young. At first, he utilized his natural talents to obtain simple things such as desserts in between meals at inappropriate hours. As he grew, he became more aware of his skills and applied them in an unconventional manner that slightly discomfited his elders.
He never had difficulty making friends, but there was something odd about the way he treated those he befriended. He established a pecking order of sorts for his friends regardless of their age. Usually he provided special treatment toward the strongest and most loyal of his friends. Those he considered less loyal to him hardly ever received anything from him. Anyone he considered useless or a threat to his happiness were treated as outcasts by him and those who followed his every command.
There was little any of the elders could do because Iven followed the rules of the abbey. The hedgehog also quickly learned how to manipulate even some of Redwall’s oldest and wisest residents. A helping hand here and some well placed flattery there and he was able to avoid lectures about his behavior. Instead, he often received high praises from the elders who were blinded by their own pride; they mistakenly underestimated him.
Not only was he a charismatic creature, but he was also very ambitious. He dreamt about ruling all of Mossflower one day and using Redwall as his castle. As he neared a mature age, he spent many seasons speaking with elders and earning their trust and admiration in an attempt to reach a new plateau of power. Whenever alone, he would read and try discovering the correct path to his goal through tedious research.
Due to the tremendous amount of time and effort he placed in talking and researching, he obtained invaluable wisdom along with his knowledge. He learned how to see through deceit, which was more than helpful whenever he addressed a subject that made others uncomfortable. He also learned to hide his true intentions and emotions well. For the most part he seemed as nothing more than an inquisitive beast whose interests and intellect garnered him tremendous respect.
It wasn’t long before he became a scholar for the little ones at the Abbey. It was his responsibility to give them a fundamental education, share the history of Mossflower and the Abbey with them, and imprint upon them the values of their order among other things. As an educator, Iven continued playing favorites and invested more time in some of his students, usually the most gifted ones, than in others. He believed that some of them had the potential to help him in his quest for kingship over the land.
Relationships: Many Redwall residents are considered his friends.
