History: She was born to Martin and Rose Wavebreeze, in Salamandastron. Her father was a Corporal in the Long Patrol and her mother was a cook. She never showed interest in either of her parents professions, but she would always hang around when the runners were around. When she was age six her parents begin noticing her running skills. Since it was still to early to have her help out at anything, they just had her play with the other young hares.
One day, when Maria was eleven, she was outside alone sitting by the shore. It was nightfall and no other beasts were in sight. She didn’t realize that a small boat had banked on the beach a little way off. In it were about 8 searats. They were sent from a larger boat to scout out the land and see what it was like. If there were beasts living there they were supposed to report back to their ship captain so they could capture them to keep as prisoners or oarslaves. The search party realizing that they had neared the badger mountain was about to turn back. They had heard too many tails of bloodwrath and fighting hares to want to bother the animals there. But then they saw a lone figure sitting on the beach. Whatever it was it looked young.
The rats decided they would try to capture this creature, just so they would have something to bring to their captain. Coming up behind Maria they surrounded her, their blade points to her head. She panicked, and not yet knowing how to defend herself, was easily captured.
She was brought back to the little row boat, and taken aboard a huge corsair’s ship. More breathtaking than the ship, was the captain, which she now had to serve. An eight foot tall fox with a hook hand, and eye patch, and massive numbers of ugly scars marring his entire body. His teeth were rotted, his claws were sharp, his fur was mangy, and most of all he was cruel. He had an awful temper, and would kill beasts for little reason at all. This is what happened to a few of the unfortunate rats that captured Maria. The fox said this would be an “example” to all who did not fulfill all of his expectations. Maria wept as she was forced to watch the execution of the rats. No matter how horrid those beasts behaved it was more terrible by far to see any beasts murdered as horribly as these were. This was no place for a barely eleven year old hare.
Worse was yet to come. Maria was commanded to work as an oar slave till the ship got back to the real master of the crew. This nearly killed Maria. Luckily the trip wasn’t long at all, or she would have been dead. When the ship banked, Maria found herself on a large, tropical island. All around was what looked like beginnings of a city. A large castle stood towering in the middle of the island.
The evil, tough, fox hustled the slaves onto the island. They were half-dead, shivering, and gaunt with starvation. Maria was only a skeleton of the hare the used to be. The fox lead the slaves to the castle, through the gates, and through many corridors. Finally he reached the door of what must certainly have been the throne room. The door was large, gilded, and strong. The fox trembled as her reached to open it. His normally bold, wicked, demeanor had vanished.
As Maria walked into the throne room, she had no doubts as to why he had acted this way. Sitting on a giant golden throne in the middle of the room, was a massive wolverine. Tough, sinewy, evil, and bigger than the fox. He rose from his throne and paced towards the slaves. Turning towards Maria, who was the youngest beasts there, he smirked wickedly. Looking into her large emerald eyes, with his silted, disgusting, cruel, black ones. Maria trembled and turned her head. The wolverine chuckled. “Bane?” he said turning to the fox, speaking calmly, “You really are worthless aren’t you?” His eyes glinted dangerously but he kept a level voice. “These scum are even weaker than the last. What do you mean by bringing me half-starved children and young ones?” He shook his head. Bane was sweating and kept his head lowered. The fox didn’t say a word. “Put these scum to work and get out of my sight Bane!” Roared the wolverine suddenly, swiping out at the fox with his deadly claws. “And don’t ever fail me again Bane… you know the price you’ll pay.”
Bane nodded and led the slaves out of the room. Now Maria’s oar-slave days had ended, and another horrible stage of her life had begun. She worked helping to build the wolverine’s city from dawn till dusk every day for the next five years. When she was too weak to carry what she was ordered to, she was whipped. She hated the way she lived, starved, beaten cruelly, and mocked. She wondered why she hadn’t had a normal life like the other hares.
When she was sixteen she spotted an old row-boat that had been left on the shore. A desperate thought came to mind. But then… when you live the way she had, nothing seems to desperate if it may mean freedom. Grabbing a friend of hers, an otter named Tom; they got into the boat and rowed away quickly. This was her only chance. The guard was on break. And if she waited till night, she couldn’t escape, because she would be locked away with the other prisoners then.
In broad daylight they made their way around to the other side of the island where they wouldn’t be spotted. Then they began wondering what on earth they were going to do. Tom looked around the bottom of the ship. Smiling, the 17 year old otter produced the two things that would save them. A map and a net. Tom showed Maria her home, Salamandastron on the map. Maria smiled and turned their little boat to face them the right way. Then Tom explained that the net was for catching their food. Maria almost threw up. Tom looked at her confused. “Raw fish!” said Maria… “You have to be kidding?”
“Naw liddle matey.” Tom replied with a wink. “Besides if an otter can do it a hare can. And anything is better than the mash we were fed by the wolverine’s chaps.”
“Ugh, don’t talk about that blasted stuff old chap…” Said Maria
Making their way through storms and eating raw fish for weeks was the last one of Maria’s unfortunate events. It was certainly not as bad as the other trials, but it was certainly not pleasant.
Finally landing on Salamandastron’s shores after nearly being lost and drowned; Maria fell on the sand in front of the mountain and promised she would NEVER let that happen again. Then taking her otter friend she made her way to Salamandastron’s door.
She and Tom were accepted back. In fact she was more than accepted. Her parents and she had such a reunion as was never seen on the mountain before. Tom was adopted by Maria’s parents since he had none of his own.
Maria finally started training to be able to defend herself. She was taught martial arts by a middle aged squirrel that would come to visit at Salamandastron. Alexander (the FistMaster) Fleettail as he was known, was skilled in paw-to-paw combat skills, and agreed to teach Maria so she could defend herself. Maria taught herself useage of the staff and katana.
Eventually she did what she always dreamed of doing and joined the Long Patrol as a running hare.
THE END
(Yeah I don’t know what got into me… And I could have made that rotten thing longer if I wanted… -sigh-)
