Name: Cross
Gender: Male
Age: Last time he checked, he was fifteen, but it's been at least five or so years since then
Species: Sea otter
Occupation: Runaway
Physical Appearance:
Cross has light, silvery body fur, with a large, cream-colored patch over his face and the front of his neck. His nose is black, and his muzzle is thickly whiskered. Across the back of his shoulders and down the length of his spine is a cross-shaped marking of dark gray fur. His right eye is pale blue, and his left eye is useless, clouded with a blue-gray fog. He has larger paws than most otters, and much denser fur. His limbs are thick and muscular, with one or two scars here and there, but these are mostly hidden by his dense fur. He is definitely on the tall side, standing at least a head taller than most creatures he meets.
Clothing:
Cross wears simple black breeches with a blue sash wrapped around his middle. He usually wears no shirt, but will don a white quarter-sleeved shirt in the cooler months. One gold ring is pierced through his bottom lip. Three gray straps are wrapped around his left leg.
Possessions:
Cross always has a large gold ring with a deep blue gem strung on a gold chain around his neck. He carries a wide blue bandana with him, which he will often use to wrap provisions in. His only weapon is a simple javelin.
Personality:
Cross is extremely reserved, barely speaking more than a few words a day. He prefers to communicate with his body language and gestures. Despite this, he's rather friendly and does like to be surrounded by others. He's an observer, keeping to himself, merely watching the happiness of those around him. Though he can be quite affectionate with those he's close to. He is not shy to approach you when you're down, offering a hug or simply his shoulder to cry on. He will sit endlessly and listen to the cares and woes of others. But he remains silent when some beast asks about his troubles. It takes a lot of time and patience to get Cross to talk about himself, and when he does, he still won't share everything. He has developed stubborn streak of shame and self-loathing due to guilt which impedes him from speaking about his past, or anything bothering him, for that matter.
Strengths:
Cross is an excellent listener, and just the otter to turn to with your problems. A strong, resourceful, and intelligent fighter, he can usually get himself out of a scrape. He rarely packs food with him, since he has learned what can and cannot be eaten in the wilderness. He's also a pretty decent healer.
Weaknesses:
Since he does not speak often, he is slow to make friends. He carries a great weight on his shoulders (more on this in his history), and he refuses to let it go. With all of his pent-up emotions raging within him, he is liable to break down at any moment, but he will not let any beast comfort him if that happens. He rarely sleeps, plagued by nightmares on a regular basis. As a result, at times he can be lethargic in the mornings. Because of his blind eye, he is unable to watch his left side closely. Also, he has no depth perception, so he can't use ranged weapons.
History:
To properly understand Cross's background, we must first understand his father's. Cross's dad, an otter by the name of Luca, was a mighty fighter in his younger days. The southern shores of Mossflower country are plagued by corsairs, so Luca and his brother Vale were constantly defending their home. But Luca grew weary of fighting, so he left it to Vale. This made Vale angry, and he tried to convince Luca to aid him again, since he couldn't possibly drive off all the vermin without his brother, even with the help of the other young otters in the seaside holt. But Luca refused again and again. Finally, Vale gave up on him and went on driving off corsair ships without Luca. One year, after a tough skirmish with a corsair crew, Vale had to temporarily cease fighting after breaking his leg in the fight. That year, a few of the other young otters had moved their families from the holt after a short famine. Only Vale and five other fighting otters remained, not including Luca. While Vale was still recovering, a corsair ship invaded, and four of the six remaining otters were killed. Vale begged Luca to help save their home, but Luca refused and fled the holt in terror. Vale had no choice but to surrender to the vermin, who took him prisoner aboard their ship. For the next thirteen years, Vale was a slave to the corsairs. Luca fled to the north, building a new home a few hundred miles south of Salamandastron in a sheltered cove. He forgot about his brother and the old holt, marrying a pretty otter maiden and fathering three sons--the eldest of which was Cross--and one daughter. One fateful day, the corsair ship that had enslaved Vale attacked the new holt. Luca recognized the ship, and in horror, he surrendered without the least resistance. The vermin, seeing the lushness of the cove, took over the holt as their own, enslaving the few otters there. Days, months, and years ran into each other, distorting sense of time in the little cove. Birthdays were not celebrated, so Cross lost track of his age. The captain of the corsair ship, a sea rat named Moro, made Luca his personal servant after seeing how cowardly and submissive the old otter was. The vermin stripped their ship of the wheel, the rudder, and its sails, using the lower decks as a floating cell for the otter slaves. It was there Cross met his uncle Vale, who was, after thirteen years, still not in the least bit submissive to his vermin captors. Inspired by his uncle's example, young Cross defied the corsairs every chance he got. He was beaten ruthlessly each time, and during one beating lost sight in his left eye. After a particularly extreme offense, Cross was brought before Moro. The rat was outraged at the young otter's behavior, and he threatened to slay every last otter if Cross would not obey him. Unwilling to sacrifice the lives of his loved ones, Cross submitted and humbly asked Moro what the rat would have him do. With a malicious grin, Moro gave Cross a spear and ordered him to kill Luca, since the old otter was getting on in years, and the rat wanted a fresh servant. Cross immediately refused, and Moro again threatened to kill the rest of the otters if Cross didn't obey. Before the young otter could reply, Luca performed the first noble deed he had in years. He smiled at his son, said he loved Cross no matter what, and fell on the spear in Cross's paws, sacrificing himself for the other otters. Cross yanked the spear out of his father's body, but it was too late. Luca was dead. Cross didn't know who to blame. He knew if he had simply obeyed his captors in the first place, he wouldn't have been brought before Moro, and none of this would have happened. But Moro had ordered for Luca to be slain, so it was as much the rat's fault as it was his, wasn't it? In a sudden rage, Cross drove the bloody spear through Moro's heart. With no captain to lead them, the vermin panicked and fled. The otter slaves, freed from oppression, drove the vermin down south and celebrated. But Cross was ashamed of what he had done to his father. So, even though he was overjoyed that his loved ones were free, he left the holt. Rage, depression, hatred, and fear boiled inside him as he ran, hoping to get as far away from the holt as possible. He reached Mossflower wood in one year's time. All along the way, he had dealt with his emotions, working on suppressing them until he could face a day without being reduced to tears. By this time, he couldn't remember how old he was, since his long (emotional and physical) journey had distorted his sense of time. But he figured it didn't matter. He was far enough away from home that his past could never catch up with him, he hoped, so he set out to start a new life in this richly-forested country. He had managed to save his father's ring and his mother's blue bandana, reminders of the happy times he once knew. He came across a small village and decided to stay there for awhile. After working for a few of the village folk, he was able to earn enough money to buy good traveling clothes and a knife, though he broke the knife while fashioning a javelin. One of the inhabitants gave him a list of edible and non-edible plants and such, which proved priceless to him during the first months of his travels. Once he left the village, he began to aimlessly roam Mossflower woods, focusing on his new nomadic life to keep his mind off his past.
Relationships:
Cross has not seen his family in years, and he has had few friendships since leaving home. He made one or two friends in the village, but he left them to roam Mossflower woodland.
Other:
Cross formed a hatred of spears after what happened to his father, and he vowed never to touch one again.
After six long years of enslavement to vermin, Cross hates any kind of evil creature, especially corsairs and pirates.
