Name: Alykas 'Aly' Veer
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Species: Stoat
Occupation: Former warrior monk
Physical Description:
Aly has a beautifully slender body with black and white fur. The left side of her body, and most of the right side is raven-black, but her right foreleg, shoulder, and right half of her face is creamy white. The fingers on her left forepaw are white and the fingers on her right forepaw are black. The division between black and white fur on her face curves, making a kind of yin-yang marking. Her left ear is tipped with white, and her right ear is tipped with black. The toes on each hind paw are white. A big patch of white spreads across her underbelly, beginning just beneath her chest and ending at the inside of her thighs. Her tail is tipped with white, and her nose is dark gray. Her eyes are almond-shaped, with long lashes; the left one is a deep blue, while the other is an almost gold. Her limbs are finely sculpted, lean and muscular. Her tail is longer and slightly more furry than the average stoat's. On each of her shoulder blades is tattooed an angel wing, a black wing on her right, a white on her left.
Clothing:
Aly has a strict need for balance, and her clothes display this. She wears a short, dark, strapless shirt embroidered with a violet butterfly; both wings of the butterfly are completely symmetrical and dazzlingly intricate, since Aly stitched it herself. The shirt has a low back to display her angel wing tattoos. She wears a voluminous metallic silver cloak with a diamond-shaped obsidian clasp fastened at her throat. Her dark blue skirt has a slit on both sides, and the black hem stretches up both slits; the front part of the skirt is slightly higher than the back for ease of movement. Upon each thigh is strapped an identical, gold-hilted knife. Around each bicep is wrapped a thin, tattered, red ribbon, with the loose ends reaching almost to her waist. On the outside and inside toe of each hind paw is a gold ring. Both ears are pierced twice with one silver loop and one gold loop each. The only thing out of balance in her clothing is a large silver ring with an obsidian stone that is always around the third 'finger' of her right foreleg.
Belongings:
Aly carries her two gold-hilted knives, a slate-gray pack which she uses for carrying provisions and such, and an old scroll on which is written some of her records from her former days as a monk (more on this in her history). Her obsidian ring is never out of her sight, and neither are her two tattered red ribbons. She once carried a longsword, but has since lost it in a bargain.
Personality:
Cold, cynical, and extremely critical, Alykas is definitely not the nicest stoat in the world. An intense perfectionist, she can never be satisfied. Her endless need for balance sees her either fixing something off-balance, or lashing out verbally at some beast when she finds some kind of imperfection. About eighty percent of the time, her every word drips with venom, and the other twenty percent, every word is an icy dagger. She shows no warmth towards anything except nature, where, so she was taught, everything is in perfect balance. She can often be seen sitting quietly in a tranquil grove, her odd-eyes trained on an ant hill, or a spider web, or perhaps a songbird, and she will simply observe. However, though she loves nature, she has no qualms against killing other living things, and she has left a trail of dead beasts behind her, believing their deaths were essential in attaining balance. The sure sign that you are on her good side: she hasn't killed you yet.
Strengths:
An excellent diplomat and clever strategist, Aly will almost always win every argument or battle she's in. She rarely backs down from a fight, and if she does, it is because she knows her opponent has the advantage. Quick to analyze a situation, Aly can come up with multiple options to deal with her given circumstances at a glance. An agile fighter, Aly uses her speed, flexibility, and stamina to win battles. She is trained in hand-to-hand combat, sword fighting, and knife throwing.
Weaknesses:
With her cold nature, Aly is slow to make allies. She turns away nearly every beast she meets with her venomous tongue and cynical ways. Though she is strong, she has less strength than speed or stamina, and a much stronger opponent could best her in a contest of brute force. Her intense need for balance is her driving force, and she inwardly crumbles if something is off-balance. It is why she feels the need to fix the imperfection or lash out at any beast nearby. She is extremely overprotective of her personal belongings, especially her obsidian ring and her ribbons. She is quick to wound and slow to forgive, and she can hold a major grudge.
History:
The name Alykas means 'clever', but that was not always the case with the young black and white stoat. She was born Taiteilla, which means 'balance' or 'to place in balance', because of her curious markings. Taiteilla was born on an island in the Eastern Sea, to a young stoat maid whose husband had died before seeing his child. The maid's name was Elsa, and she bravely took on the responsibility of being a single mother, but the task proved too much for her, and she was forced to take her baby to a temple on the island which housed a large group of warrior monks. The monks were of all species, and they were always willing to take care of a helpless child. So, at the tender age of two, Taitella was given to a monk named Garth, a strong-willed mole who cared for the little stoat as if she were his own. Under the guidance of Garth and the other monks, Taitella grew a will of her own, and she excelled at her studies and training. When she turned sixteen, she was given her red ribbons, a symbol that she was ready to begin training on her own. She also received the privilege of choosing weapons for herself, and she chose her two gold-hilted knives and a longsword. When she hit eighteen, she took a fancy to another stoat monk named Echo, and he took a liking to her, as well. Before long, Echo proposed, giving Taitella an obsidian ring to cement the engagement. But, during this time, Taitella had secretly been in contact with a rogue band of vermin, who had long been enemies of the temple monks. She hoped the sheer numbers in the gang would be enough to overthrow the temple monks, giving her a seat of power, with the gang members as her henchmen. Her secret got out when Echo found her passing a message to one of the gang members late at night. The message contained a detailed map of the temple's grounds. Outraged, Echo reported what he had seen to Garth, who was now an elder monk. The aged mole had Taitella locked in her room while the warrior monks fought the vermin gang, who had decided to attack that night. The monks won, with few losses, and Garth banished Taitella. Echo broke off their engagement and vowed he would never speak her name again. Taitella cursed them all and left the temple in a huff, taking her few worldly possessions with her, including her ring, sword, and knives. Wanting to get as far away from the site of the temple as possible, Taitella traded her sword and her services for a ride on a corsair ship called the Bloody Talon from her home island. She spent a good five years aboard the ship, learning all there was to know about traveling by sea. She discovered her knack for killing at one port, where a corsair rat from another ship killed one of her crew mates in a tavern brawl. Since the Talon's crew was now unbalanced with one less crew, Taitella slew the rat to make things even again. After that incident, she sought every opportunity to achieve balance, in both the Talon's crew and other situations she found herself in. After finally reaching the mainland, she departed from the ship and never looked back. Now she wanders Mossflower woods, searching for a new place to call her own. She feels no regret or penitence when recalling her actions at the temple, and she only wishes Echo would have joined her. However, proud of how she kept her plans secret for so long, she renamed herself Alykas, having honed her intelligence finely during her long journey to Mossflower country.
Relationships:
Alykas was once engaged, but her fiancé broke it off. Since then, she has had no other relationships.
Other:
Alykas likes great, voluminous cloaks, and she even wishes her dark silver one was bigger.
She hates being called Aly.
Butterflies are her favorite insects because of their perfectly identical wings.
