(This is Tracy)
Name: Cooper Sandusky
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Species: Hare
Occupation: MossGuard fighter
Physical Appearance:
Cooper doesn't stand out in a crowd, but on closer inspection, his appearance tends to reflect his sweet and mild disposition. He has a gentle, unassuming smile matched with a pair of soft blue eyes. His neatly-kept fur is the same color of the sand of the shores where he grew up. He's an average height for a hare, standing taller than others in his company just because of his characteristically long ears. He has a lean and sinewy build, born of light eating for long periods of time and near endless traveling.
He's typically seen in any measure of casual clothing, probably a tunic, something comfortable and useful. He still has his Long Patrol belt buckle, although he has since fashioned it into an armband he keeps clasped just above his right elbow. It is usually hidden beneath sleeves or disguised by the various camouflage he dons as a member of the MossGuard.
Possessions:
-Saber, specifically a briquet
-Dirk
-Yew and sapwood bow
-Any variety of spices and ingredients to prepare his own food
Personality:
Cooper has what one could only call a 'sweet' disposition. He's unassuming, but warm and friendly. More of a listener than a talker, the hare most likely won't speak unless spoken to. He likes to be around others, but will usually just be seen watching and listening to everything around him. Possessing extreme patience and a pragmatic inclination, he tends to be the diplomat. Despite his past troubles and his deeply held (and very secret) desire for revenge, Cooper will do what he can to avoid violence, even if it comes to holding back his own comrades. However, if there is nothing for it but a fight, Cooper is swift and decisive in battle.
Although he is willing to talk when the opportunity presents itself, Cooper refuses to speak of home. With each passing year he feels guiltier about not returning. It just feels like he's waited too long and he's sure he couldn't face his family now. Thinking about how much his little sisters must've grown actually terrifies them. Although they are still smiling little leverets in his mind's eye, he knows that is no longer the case. Now that he is in Mossflower on a somewhat more permanent basis, he is finding it more and more difficult to avoid Salamandastron, and even harder to avoid Long Patrollers that find their way into Mossflower.
Cooper is an absolute sucker for Dibbuns. Having grown up with six little sisters, he's very used to their loud, bouncy and rambunctious nature, and wouldn't trade a Dibbun's personality for the world. He supposes in another life he might've had some of his own by now. That is only one in a large pool of regrets that plague the still-young hare.
Strengths:
-Capable with a wide variety of weapons
-Diplomatic; solves problems without violence and has a knack for winning others over
-Well-traveled, has an extensive knowledge of Mossflower and its outlying regions
-Extremely patient and open-minded
Weaknesses:
-Not really a 'master' with any particular weapon
-Everything involving water, be it swimming or sailing
-Guilt-ridden. His guilt for leaving his family and never sending word has caused him to make even more bad choices, be it offering an ill-advised solution to a problem just to avoid traveling near Salamandastron, or being mysteriously absent when the MossGuard meets with Long Patrollers.
-Phobia of others preparing his food. This only developed since he left Salamandastron and has become more independent. He isn't sure, but it probably started during his time with the squirrel tribe. They confided in him their tendency to secretly poison their adversaries. In any case, he will almost never accept food given to him, and it has caused some awkward situations.
History:
Cooper Sandusky is a full-fledged Salamandastron hare, with all the traits one would expect from such a creature, with one major exception. Cooper is not a soldier. Growing up was fairly cushy for the young mountain hare; he had two supportive and loving parents and a throng of younger sisters whom he adored. He had lessons and combat training with his peers and became as proficient as any proper mountain hare. But times were quiet on the western shore, and the hare was growing restless and footloose.
In his teens, he was on a day trip just south of Salamandastron with a group of friends. During their little excursion, they encountered what appeared to be a small band of corsairs working their way inland, armed to the teeth and speaking of deadly plans. Rather than turn tail and alert the authorities at the mountain as they should have, the bullheaded, overconfident young hares decided to take the situation into their own paws. They seemed primed for an easy victory at the beginning, but in moments the situation became dire as more vermin swarmed onto the scene, outnumbering and outmatching the hares.
Cooper woke up in Salamandastron's infirmary that night, battered and bruised, but alive and with a full memory of the mistake they had all made. He'd been saved by the sheer luck of a few Long Patrollers passing in the vicinity. They had not all been so lucky. Three of the hares, including Cooper's best friend, had been killed in the senseless battle. Three other hares that had survived and remained conscious had managed to muddle the story of what happened so thoroughly that the officers could not truly find anyone completely at fault. Because of this - and in light of the lives lost - they avoided a potentially much more serious penalty and were all suspended from the Long Patrol for a season.
Cooper spent that season mulling over the worst mistake he'd ever made and working through the guilt of being responsible for his friends' deaths. He recovered from his physical injuries quickly but continued to suffer through his emotional ones. When the season was up and he was given permission to rejoin the patrol, he declined. He'd made the decision awhile ago, but it wasn't until he faced his commanding officer and told him he had no intention of continuing his career in the Long Patrol was Cooper actually sure he was going through with it. Packing lightly, he bid his confused and heavyhearted family goodbye.
The sandy-furred hare with the blue eyes and friendly features had no trouble winning over strangers and making friends. A group of mercenary squirrels, although wary of a friendly hare, eventually came to trust him enough to teach him their fine skills in archery, and their frantic, chattering natures also inadvertently taught the hare patience. From these squirrels he learned more of the land outside of Mossflower and what areas he should avoid. He eventually parted ways with them - although grateful for their help, their code of living was questionable at best - and traveled his own way for a bit.
He then came upon a tribe of riverboating shrews, an offshoot of the Guosim. They were immensely fun and friendly and a welcome reprieve from the bizarre antics of the mercenary squirrels. They gave him some lessons in logboating and sailing. It took Cooper all of about a day to decide the water-life was not for him. Although gratefully learning the tools of the trade from the shrews, the young hare was always almost instantly sick upon getting onto a boat, forget trying to stand up on a floating vessel. The shrews were also clever swordsbeasts and gave the hare some practice with his saber, teaching him some of their own techniques. He stayed with the shrews for a short time, before the tribe had to be moving on. Loath to travel on water, Cooper bid them farewell and continued again on his own.
Cooper eventually came upon his favorite group of all: a holt of river otters. Jovial yet fierce creatures, Cooper felt more at home than he had felt since he left the mountain. He spent a long time with them, learning all manner of things. They were skilled in many forms of combat and Cooper's own skills in battle were tested, pushed, and improved. The otters taught him to catch fish and how to cook many things, developing in him a taste for spice. The otter holt became a kind of home for Cooper, and he returned there frequently, but, although reluctantly, always forced himself to carry on in his journeying.
It was on one of these returns, as a strong, traveled, and well-rounded hare in his mid-twenties, that the otters were attacked by a large group of vermin. Caught off guard and viciously outnumbered, the damage and loss of life was devastating. A small number had managed to barely escape with their lives, having to run and hide, with no hope of fighting the vermin. Cooper had not just fought alongside his otter friends, but as one of them. Exhausted, defeated, broken, the survivors made a slow trek to Mossflower, seeking refuge in the healing walls of Redwall Abbey, staying there to lick their wounds and grieve.
Cooper never even set foot inside the abbey. Seeing them safely to its gates, he turned and left quickly, knowing he would never allow himself to sleep in the warm comfort of Redwall with this new threat in Mossflower.
This grief was not a foreign feeling to him, but this outward anger was. For nearly half his life he'd only known anger at himself, for all the mistakes he made, for the worst mistake he made. But now he was angry at these heartless vermin who'd attacked a wonderful group of his friends, a whole tribe of creatures who could never deserve such a thing.
Fueled by this new purpose, he made his way through Mossflower, blindly trying to find the vermin who'd slaughtered his friends. He was met with no success. In his travels however, he kept hearing a repeated rumor. Something about a new force organizing in Mossflower, under the rule of a badger. The idea of it stirred conflicting ideals in him. On one hand, he had a natural tendency to serve under a badger, and on the other it was just another regiment. Another opportunity to cause irrevocable damage. However, one aspect finally won him over: the anonymity.
Throughout all his traveling, the one thing he was able to live off was his anonymity; no one knew who he really was, what he'd done. This gave him the opportunity to be part of a new fighting force without the shame of his past looking back at him on everyone's faces. Resolved, he sought out this new fighting force, following the rumors to northeast Mossflower where the badger and a hodgepodge of woodlanders were putting together their new headquarters in what was once Brockhall.
He still had his reservations, but finally casting aside his doubts and insecurities, he breathlessly stepped forward and offered his allegiance.
Relationships:
- Parents: Breckin and Amaryllis Sandusky
- Six little sisters
- Many woodlanders, inside and outside of Mossflower
- MossGuard comrades
