Name: Jakk Shadowclaw
Gender: Male
Age: 16 human years
Species: Fox
Occupation: Wandering warrior
Physical Appearance:
Jakk is a tall, slim fox, with a lean yet muscular frame. His fur is dark brown to the point of being black, but it adopts a greenish tinge under bright sunlight. His eyes are mismatched; the left is golden, and the right is hazel green. His face is tattooed with the markings of the Juskarokk clan; a blue spiral on each cheek, and a red line running from the tip of his snout to the nape of his neck. His arms are decorated with swirling, Celtic-style tattoos of blue wode paint. A ragged, fleshy pink scar runs from his right shoulder to his navel, but is concealed most of the time by a sleeveless dark blue tabard which covers his upper torso. He also wears a frayed red-and-blue tartan knee-length kilt, which is held by a bronze-buckled eel-skin belt. A fishbone ring decorates the base of his brush tail, and around his neck hangs a necklace consisting of seven pike teeth strung to a black leather thong.
Possessions
Jakk wields two light swords, similar to katana blades, which he usually carries strapped to his back. Most of the time he wields them simultaneously. His only other weapon is a hunting knife, which he carries in his belt. Also slung from his belt is a waterskin and a hip flask, the latter of which is usually filled with some kind of ale. Finally, he carries a small backpack in which he keeps his provisions.
Personality:
Seasons spent surviving alone in the wilderness have resulted in Jakk becoming a tough, resilient character. As a fox, he is cunning and quick-witted. He is the type of creature who spends time observing the potential threats of his situation and location, and searching for advantages or routes of escape. Despite this distrust of his surroundings he himself is honest and straightforward, despite being a vermin. He has a deep sense of justice, and shows kindness to other creatures, particularly the weak and downtrodden. He admires courage and determination in any creature, be it goodbeast or vermin, his faithful comrade or sworn foe.
Strengths:
Jakk is an expert in most aspects of survival; he is a good hunter and fisher, and is able to procure some manner of food and shelter almost anywhere. His lean frame makes him an agile fighter, so he is able to dodge most of his opponent’s attacks. His sharpened survival instinct and keen senses also make him very hard to catch off guard. Also, being a fox, he is good at assessing situations quickly, and he always has a plan.
Weaknesses:
Although he is not a creature to rush into a decision, occasionally Jakk’s actions are very rash, especially when he is angry. His temper is unpredictable, fluctuating from serene calm to burning anger. He can be very single-minded at times, especially in pursuit of an enemy. Also, he finds it hard to earn other people's trust, due to his vermin status and barbaric appearance.
History:
Jakk was born a member of the Juskarokk, a clan of Juska which had settled on the Northern coast. Due to the remoteness of the clan’s position, Jakk encountered little of the savagery and massacre which vermin indulge in, as opportunities for plunder were next to none and the strict Juska law forbade fighting within the clan, apart from challenging the chief for leadership. Jakk was trained from his early years in the use of the blade and the arts of survival; at the age of twelve he was a respected hunter in the clan. The hunting knife he carries was a gift from his father, Robb Juskarokk, in acknowledgement of his first great kill; a great pike, whose teeth were used in making the necklace he wears around his neck.
That same night, Jakk’s father got drunk on nettle beer and boasted to the chief, the stoat Barra Rokk, that his son was more worthy of leading the clan than him. Barra Rokk flew into a rage and slew Robb on the spot; he then tried to kill Jakk. Jakk then experienced the first of his rages; angered by the sight of his dead father, he throttled Barra with his bare hands, receiving the terrible scar on his torso in the process. Jakk sound found himself running, with every hunter in the clan after his blood; as he had killed Barra without issuing a challenge, he was deemed a traitor. He managed to escape, taking with him Barra Rokk’s twin blades, which the stoat had used to kill his father.
Jakk had nowhere to go. Returning to the clan meant certain death. Joining up with other vermin was also out of the question; a rogue Juska was fair game for anyone. Jakk became a wanderer, travelling wherever the wind took him. Even though he was marked for life by the Juska tattoos, he discarded his clan name, adopting instead the name of Shadowclaw. The insight into vermin nature he had witnessed on the night of his father’s death had deeply affected him, and he resolved never to become like Barra, and as such the rest of the vermin. His route eventually took a southern bearing; as he travelled from the barren Northlands to the lush green fields of the south, he helped creatures who were being preyed upon by vermin, gaining a reputation as a defender of the weak. Through the goodbeasts he helped, he heard tales of Redwall Abbey and its inhabitants. Hoping to finally find a safe haven, he set out into Mossflower in search of the legendary Abbey.
