Name: Wotter
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Species: Sea Otter
Occupation: Part of the/an Otter Quartet
Physical Appearance:
Wotter isn't particularly strong for an otter, nor would he necessarily be considered handsome. He is rather tall, more so than his friend, Trask, and is somewhat thin, due to being a slave half of his life. He has several noticeable scars, but nothing extremely significant. He has two, blue eyes, and dark brown fur, that half-covers his eyes.
Wotter typically wears a blue tunic under a tan vest, and dark blue trousers, or a similarly-colored kilt. Atop his head, he wears a black beret, which he never seems to remove.
Possessions
Wotter is almost never seen without his beret, and carries a small sort of ocarina which he occasionally uses in the Quartet's performances.
As for weapons, he prefers the spear, but isn't oft seen carrying one about, especially considering he doesn't run into bloodthirsty vermin on a regular basis. However, he does typically carry a sling with him, but for its usefulness, rather than for protection.
Personality:
Wotter is a serious otter, and isn't particularly talkative, but not necessarily as quiet as Shor. He doesn't laugh very often, nor does he hae much of a sense of humor. He is quite meticulous, analyzing and planning everything before he acts. Even simply taking a step forward, he will consider the step thoroughly. As strange as this habit of his may be, it prevents many potential accidents, and can be quite helpful at times. Other times it can hinder an action or a plan, as he will sometimes over-analyze a situation, and therefore make a mistake. Wotter is quite hesitant, and does not like to take chances, which can be a problem. He will wait too long to act, which can cause him to lose an opportunity. Even so, the actions he does take are usually well-thought out, and he leaves little room for mistakes.
Strengths:
He is analytical, thinking all of his actions through, and he is a skilled musician.
Weaknesses:
He isn't particularly strong, nor is he a skilled fighter. He sometimes over-analyzes a situation. He is very hesitant, sometimes waiting too long to act, and can thereby lose an opportunity.
History:
Wotter lived much of his life on island in the middle of the Eastern Sea. Although having lived with only his family most of his life, Wotter was treated as a slave. His parents had never given him a name, usually just referring to him as one would a total stranger. As much as he would like to think he was adopted, the nameless otter's parents were both sea otters like himself, cruel as they may have been. He and his siblings built the house they were to live in, and were slaves in their parents' eyes. They worked throughout the day, fetching this or that, searching for food, and the like, each rewarded one small meal each day, unless they happened to make a mistake, little or not. In addition to this, their mother, who had been driven mad seasons before any of them were born, would place riddles in various places, and if the answer was not found before night fell, one of two things would happen. Either the three siblings would be forced to spend the night neck deep in freezing river water, or the insane mother would attack them at night, forcing them to hide until morning. Occasionally, they would intentionally not answer the riddle, and would go to a hiding place where they built a make-shift boat to escape with. However, they knew if they stayed there too long, both parents would look for them, and would eventually find the hiding place. They would return home when the sun rose, so as not to make their parents suspicious.
One of the three siblings survived all this: Wotter. The first had died a day before the second, the night their hiding place was discovered, and the second died because she was mourning too much to think clearly and solve the riddle her mother had left. Wotter and his sister were chased through the forest by their mother, and the sister tripped and fell. In moments, she was dead. Wotter snatched the dagger from his mother, and killed her with it, piercing her heart. Taking advantage of the moment, Wotter immediately began working on the make-shift boat, which luckily hadn't been discovered yet, unlike their hiding place. He worked as quickly as he could, and by sunup, the boat was finished, and ready to sail. His father would awaken to find no one. That morning, the sea otter escaped, leaving behind the terrible memories of the wretched island. He named himself Wotter, deciding that he needed a name just as his parents had had names, and wanted to name himself after the water on which he escaped on. It wasn't until later that he would learn the true spelling of the word 'water.' His mother never was the best speller, and his father was illiterate, so at the time, he knew almost nothing of how to read or write.
Days later, Wotter was dazed with hunger and thirst. He wondered if he would ever reach land, or if there even was a world other than the island he had lived on his entire life. He had almost given up, when another boat came into sight. On it were only two river otters, one of them three seasons younger than Wotter himself. They helped him onto their boat, and gave him food and water as they turned around and headed back for wherever it was they came from. When asked, Wotter wouldn't give any information concerning his past, telling them, "I would rather not talk about it." That door was better left closed.
Upon entering Noonvale, Wotter was immediately befriended by Telsso, and had already met Trask. Wotter was amazed at the families he saw. Each creature had a father and/or mother who actually cared for them. The idea was foreign to Wotter, and he decided that he needed a family of his own. Being a talented singer, Wotter soon joined Telsso and Trask in their performances.
Not long after he had arrived, Trask's father disappeared after sailing out to sea. Wotter wondered, as Trask stood at the shoreline, and waited for his father's return. Wotter would never consider standing at the shore of his home island, let alone standing there waiting for his father to come. Not wanting to get involved in it, Wotter continued his life at Noonvale, learning how to read and write.
One day, Trask stopped waiting for his father at the shoreline, apparently unable to even look at the sea, let alone stare at it for hours on end each day. The very next day, a river otter came upon Noonvale. He went by the name of Shor. Shor and Wotter found that they had similar names in that they were both misspelled versions of real words that referred to the sea. Shor soon joined Trask, Telsso, and Wotter as part of the singing group, and the four became Noonvale's Otter Quartet. Shor would write songs for them, though they still kept the tradition of singing older songs as well. Once, as a joke, Telsso sneaked up behind Wotter, and placed a beret on his head in the middle of a performance. Since then, Wotter has rarely been seen without the beret, having thought the joke a very good one.
Later, the Quartet left Noonvale, and came upon Redwall Abbey, where they now live.
