Name: Oakrudder
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Species: Otter
Occupation: Although known to replace his spade-head with a spear-head in times of trouble, Oakrudder can usually be found in the Abbeygrounds contentedly digging, planting and weeding in the sunshine. Oakrudder is sometimes referred to as "Old Greenpaw" and is a very accomplished farmer. He can encourage almost any plants to grow, and when it comes to his garden and fields, he is very patient and loving.
Physical Appearance:
Oakrudder is a typical otter with no particularly striking features. He is as tall and brown and braw as the rest of his species, and certainly none of these characteristics have been hindered by the many seasons he has spent labouring in the sun. He has built up an impressive array of callouses on his paws, and is considered to be particularly strong.
However, his tail, though not unusual in appearance, is particularly thick and strong, and has a degree of prehensilability about it. Oakrudder can often be seen carrying a bucket of water behind him using only his rudder, which he can hold out straight and curl slightly around the handle for extra support.
Oakrudder only wears earth-coloured clothing, conscious of how muddy he can get in his occupation.
Possessions
Oakrudder doesn't have many possessions, not really having the time nor the inclination to collect things. He does own an array of farming tools and buckets, most of which he has crafted himself in his spare time.
He also has a few books about seasons and farming techniques, borrowed from somebeast or other, however struggles to sit still and read long passages at a time. He has fastidiously marked pages with information which he considers to be important so he doesn't have to leaf through the books every time.
His most valuable and cherished possession is an intricately crafted silver spearhead. It is designed like a fish, with the double-pointed tips of the spear representing a fish's tail, and the place where the handle would fit represented by a gaping, perfectly round mouth. The entire spearhead is delicately engraved with scales. Oakrudder often polishes his spearhead, and keeps it nearby his farming tools (deliberately crafted with handles of the same size as required by the spearhead). He inherited it from his father, and it has been passed down through the generations. Story has it that it was a gift to an ancestor from a Badger Lord who presented it to him as a gift for services in a great battle by the sea.
Personality:
Oakrudder is, like most otters, fairly relaxed and confident. He loves food, and enjoys discussing it at length with the kitchenbeasts whenever he brings in a harvest. He especially loves eating it, and has a voracious appetite which is by no means whetted by the hours spent working outdoors.
Oakrudder is also interested in bettering his farming techniques, and although he struggles (like most otters) with academia, he is always ready to discuss seasonal patterns and optimal conditions for particular plants with anyone who seems the slightest bit interested.
He is fairly sociable, and participates in most Abbey activities, but at the same time he is content to spend time on his own outdoors, humming otter songs to himself and his plants while he works.
Strengths:
Oakrudder has four key strengths:
- his physical strength and power
- his prehensile tail
- his calm and sensible demeanour, and
- his skills at farming
Weaknesses:
- his dislike of swimming, which leads to
- his relative estrangement from otter tribes
- his difficulties with reading and education which he can't hear or see or touch or make (e.g. reading)
History:
The major details of Oakrudder's past are centred upon an accident which happened when he was a babe. He and his brother were swimming slightly downstream from their home one afternoon while it was raining. His mother had called out a warning, but neither listened and were taking turns diving for interesting pebbles. Both caught glance of a black pebble with white speckles and both dived for it at the same time. Just then, a massive swell of water came cascading down from a nearby tributary, forming an irresistable underwater current. Both Oakrudder and his brother were dragged along the riverbed for minutes. Oakrudder was eventually washed ashore and, amidst the sobs of his distraught mother, managed to have all the water pumped from his lungs. His brother was not so lucky.
The otters in his holt were very supportive and sympathetic, however Oakrudder was never able to overcome his fear of swimming and the memories of his brother's frightened face being carried away by unseen forces. As he grew older, he decided that as he couldn't take part properly in otter culture anymore, he would seek his fortune elsewhere. He kissed his mother goodbye, and eventually found himself at the gates of Redwall Abbey. He often goes back to visit his mother and his holt for an evening of stories, songs and shrimp 'n' hotroot soup but never stays long. His father died in recent seasons, which has severed the connection a little further.
It should be noted that Oakrudder will often take a dip in the Abbey Pond, but will never go near the River Moss, and the idea of the ocean's tide is unthinkable.
