Name:
Abbess Gale Zephyr
Prefers to be called 'Abbess Gale' over her last name.
Gender:
Female
Age:
Unknown
Many of her fellow Redwallers call her 'Ancient'. We assume she is of a great, long age.
Species:
Bat-Eared Fox
Occupation:
Abbess of Redwall Abbey
Physical Appearance:
Deep pools of grey shining through broad features, a forced grin forever plastered upon a wide shaped muzzle...A withering body near knocking at the door of death.
Abbess Gale is the picture of an elderly grandmother that you always loved to visit when young. Infact, it's hard for the creatures of Redwall Abbey to even think of a time when she wasn't old. An ancient fox, the first canine Abbot of Redwall, and a wise consultant.
But she isn't quite what one would expect a fox to be. She is of the Bat-Eared Fox species. Like the name suggests; Abbess Gale's ears are massive, proudly three-times the length that her head could ever be. The tips of these huge ears are lined black, the rest of the color is like her body; sandy brown. However, age plays a part for these once magificent trophies of nature. They now bend a quarter down, handing over the top like loose pieces of flab.
Other than her ears, the elderly fox isn't in the shape of a fox. Her body is bushy with thick sandy fur, while her limbs are skinny with extremely thin black fur; it's a wonder how they support her. Yet she is thin beside her thick fur; a lack of proper diet is because of this. Abbess Gale's face is stretched wide around the cheek-area, giving her the impression she is smiling all the time. Beside both of her dark grey eyes are black markings running to either side of her jaws.
Ah. For the most important part of a fox; their tail. Her's has a thick line of black fur running underneath her tail; the rest is a darker sandy brown. Because of her species; this Abbess is taller than most beasts at Redwall, but shorter than most foxes. Bat-Eared Foxes are tiny compared to normal foxes in Mossflower.
Yes, she wears the traditional dark green robe of the previous Abbots and Abbesses that were before her, but this robe is stretched to fit the shape of a fox. She is constantly bothered by the wide sleeves. Having such thin limbs and so much room makes them drag, getting in the way of tasks. Oh yes, she also wears oval glasses half way down her thin muzzle. Some grey fur is flecked around her face as well.
Possessions
Abbess Gale doesn't have any possessions held dear to her, except the Abbey of Redwall and it's creatures. Nothing hand-held, mind, but they hold a place in her heart.
Personality:
It's in the nature of any Abbot or Abbess of Redwall to be kind and loving to all beasts. Love the Abbey and protect it's creatures. The elderly fox lives up to this, taking a vow of vegetarianism even so that she may live in peace without distrust. Though some newcomers look down upon her for being a fox, and perhaps her fellow Redwallers sometimes, she is far from being crafty. Intelligent yes, but Abbess Gale doesn't have the heart to trick another beast. She looks down on her Redwallers for doing so, even if it was for the good of any cause.
Honestly is the key. She is outright honest; good or bad. Abbess Gale tends to go toward the positive words, but if threats arise and she is facing a beast that has done wrong upon another; she will get a loose tongue. Oh yes, she can be rather strict with others. Rather demanding of mannerisms, politeness and the likes, she wants to set a good example of Redwall Abbey. Not show it for a disorganized dump. Like that would happen, but she worries about it. She gets in a titter about little things; a messy kitchen, late harvest or friends returning late to the Abbey. But she wouldn't burst out in violence...it's more of a motherly worry.
It's not unlike Abbess Gale to be seen wandering around the grounds of Redwall. She likes to check up on things alone. It reassures her.
Strengths:
Nothing is so strong as gentleness...
Those ears serve a purpose; she has excellent hearing, usually showing randomly up behind Redwallers and commenting on their conversations. Some are baffled by it still, others are used to it.
For her many defaults, she makes up for it in intellect. A stragietest, Abbess Gale shows great interest in forming plans of any kind.
Weaknesses:
...It's a weakness to get caught up in either one
But those ears are extremely sensitive to loud noises. Abbess Gale cannot stand to hear them; it could damage her hearing perminately if she heard a sound loud enough.
Because of this sensitiveness, she is also timid, jumping at beasts yelling and what not.
Her age plays a part in Weaknesses. She isn't a young beast anymore. Her poor diet (in the eyes of a normal fox, that is) adds to this as well. She is weakened with age, not able to move as quick or fight in battles.
History:
Gale Zephyr was born far from Mossflower country, across the ocean to a foreign land. Her family was natural born travelers. As soon as she was born, they took a ship over to Mossflower and set up various 'temporary' bases. Not quite used to the cold of winter, her parents kept fleeing into the woods. The family would seek shelter in the thick trees.
Of course, this ment that the family of Bat-Eared foxes would eventually meet with the woodlanders or 'grass-eaters', as they called them. Her family had no idea that many mice, voles and other wonderful food was waiting for them.
Hunting was plentiful. Her father brought back several bodies a day. Gale watched, not able to eat solid food at the moment, horrified at the lifeless gazes the other animals would make as they hung from his jaws. Fearful, accusing, anger...All that and more.
Her parents knew there was something wrong with their daughter. The little fox would turn her head away from the meat, retreating to the safety of the makeshift den. Many times did her mother force her to try and eat the 'food', scowling at her daughter as she threw it back up in disgust. Never did Gale get a good taste for it.
Shame was brought upon the family of foxes. If their offspring couldn't eat meat, they couldn't hunt, then she couldn't survive in the wild. Gale would eventually die of starvation sooner or later, too. She refused to eat anything, only nibbling on grasses beneath the snow.
Both the parents didn't want to see their cub starve infront of them. They drove her out, disowning her completely.
The little fox cub wandered through a mild blizzard, hunger in her belly and at a loss of where to go. Mossflower...it was unknown to her. All the trees looked the same!
But wait...what was...that? Quickening her pace, she yelped and drew back, almost running into a badger. Her parents told her that they would kill babes. Yet...this badgermaid turned and looked at the little fox with pity in her eyes. A simple "Lost?" and Gale felt compelled to trust her. She held out a timid paw and walked with the badger to what seemed like a massive fort in the middle of the woods.
---
Ahh. Too long it has been since that night.
Gale was adopted by the badgermaid, who never had a babe of her own. But she was given the last name of 'Zephyr' which ment 'storm', for she was found in a blizzard.
Redwall Abbey was the name of the 'fort'. It was a wonderful place, full of many creatures. The Abbot welcomed the little fox, but it took some time to convince the others that she ment no harm. After seasons of rejecting meat the woodlanders had kindly collected for her, they gave a swift nod and passed her an apple instead. How she loved fruit.
---
Yet another many seasons had passed.
Gale Zephyr became old, watching Redwall Abbey change around her. She grieved for her badgermother, who died long ago, and felt sorrow for all those she outlived. But she survived. Survived long enough so when the previous Abbot stepped down, she went in their place, accepting their humble offer.
And so it has been for some time.
Relationships:
Mother and Father--> Unknown, Disowned her when cub.
Badermother--> Name unknown. Deceased.
Creatures of Redwall Abbey are her family now.
Other
To say the least; I gots permission to play the Abbess from the Admin. Oh yes. Fear me. ...Rawr.
