Name: Arlis Openshaw
Gender: Male
Age: Middle-aged
Species: Otter
Occupation: A bit of a renaissance beast, having formerly been an apprenticed scribe, and also had short stints as a cook and scop. Currently a wanderer, taking odd jobs to get a morsel.
Physical Appearance:
Arlis, though being of a fair and respectable age, still retains a fairly healthy build; his stoop is slight, and he has a thin, able figure, however his stomach does bulge out slightly, and he is certainly past his prime.
His coat has also faded into a silvery white, which he makes a decent attempt to keep clean, even when travelling for days without coming across a stream or pond. In the off chance that his pelt doesn't have a yellow tint to it, a faint shimmer can almost be seen in his grizzled fur, and if not there, then perhaps in those sapphires he calls eyes, despite loss of their luster over the seasons. And if not there, one can always pretend the gleam off his spectacles is a wonderous sight, just to oblige the old bloke.
Possessions
Though he very rarely wears them openly, Arlis is almost never without his trusted spectacles, both an embarassing reminder of his dependency and a necessity.
Personality:
Arlis often first presents himself a socialable fellow, tending to be courteous while having a mischievous side to gain attention. After fading into the background, however, he becomes rather contemplative and timid, as if the distraction of new faces was the only thing keeping his mind from a dark history, though he'd never let himself confess to that. For whether he be outgoing and affectionate, or cynical and troubled, Arlis retains a stubborn pride that does not allow him to open himself completely. Yet.
Strengths:
Though many a young dibbun may consider it a curse, Arlis is gifted with an ability to read, a skill that he has often seen underrated in his travels. As a result of his affinity for books(aside from having poor eyesight) is a decent knowledge and understanding of a range of topics, a knowledge which he continues to feed at any chance he gets. He's also been said to have a soothing, mellow singing voice, as well as a familiarity in the kitchen.
Weaknesses:
Once a trained spearbeast, years of non-combat have left Arlis's sword-arm incredibly demanding, and for this he decides to travel unarmed, considering his skill of fighting of less use than simply running. He is also rather sensitive to comments on his age, not just out of pride, but out of a dislike for the passage of time and his mortality. His proud and cynical nature also makes getting close to this aging otter a difficult process, as he fears loss so much as to not chance it.
History:
Arlis's birthplace lies a fair bit northeast of Redwall, at a village lying on the edge of the River Moss. His parents were of decent standing in the village, and thus were able to give young Arlis an early education, which is where the young pup first began to read. For the most part, his childhood was pampered and innocent, and when he came into adolescence, he became an apprentice to the village's chronicler, further advancing his intellect by writing down the tales of the town's residents, gaining their knowledge.
Unfortunately, these blissful seasons were not to last, as one night, vermin descended upon the village from the waters, destroying the entire village. Arlis and a small group were able to escape, but his family perished in the attack.
The survivors formed a small militia from the sparse armaments they had, and made their way through Mossflower to track down the vermin. Several seasons passed and the group's numbers dwindled, until the militia finally came to another vilage up north. There, Arlis pleaded with the local Chieftain to join the village's troop, and he remained in service for roughly five seasons.
He'd left to marry a young maid, whom he doesn't care to name, and when asked of his life in the village since then, he'll only tell a few pleasant anecdotes of the many jobs he performed, before casually noting that the village had also succumbed to another vermin attack.
Since the loss of a second home, Arlis has chosen to simply wander Mossflower, knowing that if he should decide on a home a third time, it may also be lost to him.
Relationships:
No current relationships, just past.
((Just wondering, would there perhaps be an opening for either the Abbey Friar or bookkeeper?))
