" 'ello old chaps!" said Brother Gaelic as he entered the kitchen. "Well my word! This soup smells greatly good!" He passed the soup and and stole a scone. Seeing this, one of the maids shooed him away from the tray.

Some-one else was causing trouble in the kitchen. Merce Whitedeath was on the loose in Redwall Abbey. (For all of you who do not remember, he got in during "Open the Gate!") The white weasel crept about the tables and ovens were busy beasts toiled happily, joking an laughing. Merce too was smiling, but not very nicely. A mouse-maid made her way across the kitchen, a huge pie clutched in her paws. Merce's smile got bigger, and more evil, if such was possable. He stuck his foot-paw in front of the maid at the last second, and oblivious look on his face. She toppled with a shrill yell and pie went every-where. Merce grabbed his foot-paw, his face a mask of faked pain. The mouse leaped up, full of idignation. "You tripped me!" she shouted in rage. "Ouch," moaned Merce, hopping around on one foot. The commotion was noticed by a large otter, one of skipper's crew, who approached with an angry glint in his eye. "What have you been do'in ti this maid weasel?" asked the otter none to nicely. "What have I done to her?" asked Merce, "you should ask, what did she do to me!" The otter glared at Merce but said, "Alright, what did she do?" "She stepped on my foot while I was just minding my own business," said Merce, "I didn't try that! I fact! She owes me an apology!" He followed this with another grimace and glanced at his foot-paw, as if to see if it was all right. "All right," said the mouse-maid still slightly angry (and not at all without reason,) "I'm sorry." The kitchen workers stopped watching and all went back to their duties. The otter gave a final distrusting glance at Merce and strode away. The mouse-maid went about cleaning up what was left of the pie (The usual crowd of dibbens had eaten most of it off the floor.) Merce swaggered through the kichen as if the whole thing had never happened, and innocent smile on his innocent features.
